Don't be fooled by the LEAF capacity bars! The first bar is worth ~15.5% the others just ~6.5%.
    So 3 bars gone = ~70% capacity left. And 2 bars gone = ~77%...
Nissan probably did this so the LEAF's don't loose their first bar when they are still on the dealers lot!
Right now my LEAF is at 83% SoH according to leafspy, but the car still has 11 bars (11/12 = 92%). That is some BS!
So allways be checking with leafspy before you buy one.

I am still using NiCd batteries from 1993 in a R/C-Transmitter for my model airplane. Capacity is about 65% of rated capacity @0.2c discharge rate. Reliable even in -10°C and tolerates +60°C aswell.
But compared to NiMH and Li-Ion the specific capacity per weight is ridiculously low, barely better than Lead-Acids.

Thank you, Mr Bjorn, for yet another entertaining video!
Incidentally (another proof that in life, there are no incidents), just yesterday I was going through my country's biggest site for selling used EVs to snatch a cheap second family EV car with some 100km of winter range, and I came across a Renault Fluence for 10000EUR... I did a bit of research about this car and unfortunately, I had to pass on it (only 3kW charger, type 1 plug, charging never under 6 hours, 22kWh swappable battery (do the words "Better Place" ring any bells?), and some 60000kms done with a nominal initial range of 100km)... It would be so nice if there would be a system to upgrade the old electric car batteries with the modern, more energy-dense battery modules (Like Tesla S modules, for example)... Thanks again for a great video!

And regarding the Renault Fluence electric, it was developed with the now deceased Better Place company that planned to push in electric cars with Battery changing solution. They were active in Israel and Denmark before they got bankrupt. But this clearly shows that the Fluence was not a regular compliance car. And BTW it is strange that you don't consider the Golf a compliance car, and does it really justify the price premium compared to the Nissan Leaf?

In the UK, I would be
very careful when buying from a car dealer, we bought our first 2011
Nissan Leaf from a Private dealership which was selling expensive
cars of all makes. We found after owning the car that it must of had
a small bump up front because the charging flap does not close
cleanly and the colour blue does not quite match, and there is over
spray on some very small rubber air deflectors along the lower front
edge. Apart from the colour match it was not until we bought a second
Leaf, (to replace our one and only remaining ice car), that the other
two points became obvious when comparing the two cars. We could of
knock off a few more quid if we have known!
    Our second Leaf
was bought from a newly established EV dealership. Now, and although
this came across as a more professional and knowledgeable dealer,
compared to many others! They too did me out of a missing motor
under-tray panel, which was missing! This only came to light when I
put the car into a Nissan Dealership Service depot and they reported
it back to me! £88 for the part and £50 to fit. I will live without
it until I get hold of one from a scrap dealer for less than the fit
    cost!
But I would recommend a Leaf fitted with a 7kw onboard
charger, as this comes in very useful when travelling long distances,
it helps to short the time taken to get from A to B, especially if
the super charging network is poor.
    We both do 40/45 mile
commute each day, and both cars handle this comfortably in the winter
months, but the 2011 only has 74% of its battery life left so the
heater is not an option whilst travelling, but it is heated up prior
to leaving home. The newer model a 2015 has 84.5% of its battery life
left, and car use the heater all the way, plus it has better
regenerative braking capability compared to the old model. The
heating system is also more efficient these and a few others where
included in the 2013 update, MK2.
    Both cars where bought
at around 30K miles on the clock, and under £10K and have performed
perfectly, we aim to own both cars for at least five years before
    exchanging, or upgrading the battery!

    About the Leaf
First bar loss in a leaf is 15% every naar after that is 6.25%. Our leaf has 11 bars and 83% capacity left. (87% soh in winter).
Dont forget the facelift from the leaf which brings the heatpump, better battery, interior and lighter weight and more efficiënt motor.
Zoe, twizzy and Fluence in netherlands have mandatory battery lease which makes then way more expensive. Some Leafs have it as well but not many.

Since you clicked in on a Twizy twice let me clarify: They can be used on the motorway leagally since they are 4-wheel motorcycles, however you will struggle to keep 80+ khp. They use a 6,1 KWh battery pouch style lithium battery, the real range is more like 50km (renault claims 80km, and ive only obtained this in perfect weather conditions on flat roads.) They only charge via shucko, the charger has a 16A input, but ralisticly charges at about 13A, with active cooling. When i got mine 2 years ago, leafs where still a bit expensive, and would get a leaf at todays prices. The only upside for me is that i have free parking at work, that would normaly cost me 100 euros a month. So compared to a leaf i save about 1200 euros per year.

Just a quick note on the Mercedes B-class. It won't take 4 hours to charge it fully. More like 3 hours give or take. I've taken road trips from Trøndelag to Bergen in that thing so I have some experience with it :) I also find that it stays between 18-20 kwh consumption when driving long trips. It's actually not thirsty at all. Short trips in and around town when it's cold is a different story as it uses a lot of energy when you start the car but after 5-10 minutes the consumption is low. Also, great storage space. The biggest drawback for me as an owner who takes long road trips in the summer is the lack of fast charging. There is a mod that can be installed that will make it charge fast but it has to be imported from the US and will be very costly. Would be cool if you did a video on used Teslas and which to buy!

If one battery reach 50°C then the charging speed is reduced to about 35kW to prevent battery degradation

    • @rkan2

I think in the Nordic countries and UK you can at least decide, whereas in the mainland, only a leased battery is (or has been) an option. I think in Finland it has never been possible to buy the cars which only allow renting the battery in other places. At least the Zoe can be now bought...

And when you sell it you sell it «without» a battery.

I think it's sad how difficult the rules are to switch battery chemistry for these old cars in Norway.
There are probably a few early EVs that ended up in the graveyard, because the battery died.
Would be so nice if it were easier to switch to a different more reliable battery.
People don't want to put a lot of money into a old technology replacement battery.
It would be more interesting, if it were easy to switch to:
    - new technology, more reliable
    - more energy dense , giving more range
    - more mass produced, lower price.

Bilen har rullet litt over 40 000.

I wouldn't call the triplets old. They sell almost the identical ones today for 150'kr and the price was reduced when Leaf came since it was being compared to Leaf with a price of 250'kr. I was actually looking for one in 2015, but the price gap between them in 2012 model was only 25'kr and test drive proved Leaf was way more luxurious and I can preheat without it being plugged in, which is great. I would never buy a 22kWh Zoe if a Leaf was the alternative because of the Chademo you get with Leaf.
If 40kWh Zoe gets fast charging CCS then it doesn't matter the TN requirement makes for slow charging otherwise since you can then fast charge for extra range so I think a car for 50'kr less than a smiilar Leaf would be a economic and good choice.

Hey Bjørn here some additional infos:
the triplets have at least air cooled battery not like leaf. So no rapidgate:
    ruclips.net/video/ZbV_5O7_yGk/видео.html
and they are able to fastcharger with 125A! that results around 40kW.
The smart is available with a charger with your favorited charging power of 22kW and available with BRABUS tuning.
The Renault Fluence has a 3.5kW onboard charger.
And here you have to pay for the battery like on ZEO…
And the same is also for the small Twizy… the lease is for that battery size freaking high!
On the Leaf you can have both leased or bought battery. At least in Switzerland.
The e-NV200 without seats has this split door to get you the possibility to load stuff with a forklift. With the standard luggage compartment door you would have a collision *SHHIIIIIIIIEEEEETTTT*
The RAV4 second gen is also equipped with Tesla battery and powertrain like the Mercedes B class. Phase Zero was even with Roadster (no not the roadster 2! the original one) components!

The Peugeot 106 and the Citroen Saxo were technically identical, the Renault Clio was a different story.

It can have that meaning in Norwegian as well, but good-for-parts-only is more common. For example bilkollektivet.no calls their shared cars "delelbil".

That saxo, 55 mph top speed, 20 x 6V NiCad batteries and a small fuel tank to run a small heater. Claimed 40-60mi range....probably because the rest of the car is about as sturdy as a crisp packet. Apparently you had to rent the battery as well!
That black plastic Norwegian effort is absolutely tragic looking.
