- Hey guys, KangasKid18 here. I can't be alone in noticing that the new Shiny Pokemon for Sun and Moon look a little weird. I think I've figured out why, but I don't think it's a very good reason and it's something that Gamefreak should look into changing in the future.

I always thought Espeon's shiny should be a nice orange pink like the sunrise. Because it's the sun pokemon.
instead it is one of the worst shinies in the game lol

it's green and orange because it's based off of a carbuncle, a mythological beast which is green whit an orange gem.

well the new 3d models are at least making an attempt to make the shade of green on espeon less disgusting looking. now it reminds me less of vomit and more like a pretty emerald

I don't really understand how changing a Pokemon's entire colour palette could be considered "subtle changes" as you say.
David Coventry changing a pokemons entire color palette doesnt have to be an extreme change. Look at gengar. thats what he means by subtle.
I guess, but some of the ones praised in the video, such as Sylveon, Espeon and Spritzee were a bit of a clusterfuck in my opinion.

Pikachu's entier line is realy subtle,
Gashtly and hunter have notable differences (the blue mist and mouth) while a shiny pichu is nearly identical to its standard form, and the rest of it's line is only slightly more orange/darker than the standard
Honestly, I wish Shiny Espeon was something different from green entirely. Can you imagine it a powder blue or silver? Beautiful!
I like Espeon's shiny okay, but I thought it would look really cool as either an orange or yellow color as a reference to its classification being the Sun Pokemon.

Espeon's original shiny color is pretty good, so I don't think there should be a big change. A light, mint green would suit it better though.

I disagree when people say Gamefreak is being "lazy" with shiny designs. A very subtle change doesnt make 'em lazy. They could have been working on each shiny an hour. I don't think they're like "Hey do you know those white trees?"

I think deep thought goes into all these shinies. Some just turn out better than others. Tbh I think some shinies just should be very subtle. Like Crabrawler and dare I say Komala. Every shiny can't have a super drastic change like Hawlucha. Sometimes you need some Gengars. Just my opinion.
Sidenote: I like alot of these Alolan Pokémon shinies.
The point I was trying to make is that there is only ONE Pokemon that gets subtle color changes. A lot of the ones that could have used subtly different colors - a slightly different purple for Crabrawler's shell, a tiny bit lighter gray for Komala's fur - instead just keep their same old colors. I agree that subtle shinies can be good shinies... but there isn't any subtlety in Gen VII unfortunately. That being said, I do like many of the shinies and of course I'm going to catch all of them!

I feel like Gamefreak tried to make the shinies in Sun/Moon look more tamed to give off that "natural" color change feel.
Or maybe, because it's Alola, the shiney forms look more... novel... like the things tourists would be drawn to? I dunno.

djChives95 well.... They're not. If they sparkle as they enter battle and have a different colour palette from the normal version, they are shiny. Even if they had the exact same colour as the normal but they sparkled as they entered battle they would be objectively shiny as the game developers decided they are, nothing subjective about it.

I was always choosing moon from the start. I prefer Lunala over Solgaleo XD It just has such a nice design. It looks beautiful and intimidating at the same time.
Decidueye's shiny is pretty badass. Gonna' soft reset for one soon.
Also I was always going to choose Moon, because personally I was always fascinated by the Moon in real life, but also because Lunala looked a lot cooler than yet another lion Pokemon. There are many bat Pokemon, but Lunala was entirely unique in it's own right. Plus Cosmog looks exactly like what a pre-evolution of Lunala would look like, color pallet and personalty.
IMO theres nothing wrong with the shinies in sun and moon. Some are better than others, as always but there's nothing particularly "off" about them.

Seal Sixfour Honestly, that comment was mainly a joke, but it certainly a possibility.
I don't see anything wrong with the more selective palette swaps. The shinies that just change every color into some barfy, incoherent mess don't really interest me. Changing just one or two conspicuous colours into something that still looks attractive is one of the best ways to do a shiny, in my opinion. It helps retain a Pokémon's identity and feels more natural.

I would agree if that's what they had done from the start. I don't so much hate the new shinies, it's just that they feel... wrong... compared to the old ones. If they wanted to selectively change colors, the least they could have done would have been to just slightly alter every other color. Like how some shinies look almost exactly like their non-shiny forms. Then they could have at least said they tried.
Who else likes Shiny Minior Core?
I don't because all the cores end up the same colour, instead of as unique colours.

I also know that some shinies are being made to make sense scientifically which is the case for many alolan shinies. Though I've only ever had a shiny luvdisc so I can't complain too much

There are 256^3 or 16,777,216 color options available in the RBG scale.
Which would only just barely cover 1 per game (at least for the first couple years after it's release as most sell about low 10 millions during that time).
The problem comes in when you factor in the fact that not everyone necessarily sees every color exactly the same and that even if we did some combinations are so similar you wouldn't really be able to tell the difference making them effectively the same color.
For example, most people, yourself included wouldn't be able to tell me the difference between 255, 255, 255 white and 255, 255, 254 white. Not by looking at it, at least.
That narrows it down to more like 256^2 or 65536 easily distinguished colors if you're being pretty generous meaning each one would be available many times over.
Best they could do is also combine it with something like Spinda multiplying that by several billion.
Or something like a pokemon with different colors. C'mon, shinies are more than green nowadays. 65536 colors quickly multiplies when each pokemon has more than 1 color.
I think having a shiny for each known existing color would be too much, but I think multiple versions of a shiny would be cool. Even if it's just 2 or 3

I have played through Pokemon silver, emerald, diamond, and black multiple times. I have also played through flora sky, glazed, dark rising 1 and 2, and snakewood. I have found one shiny. and it was a fucking bidoof.

Come on though, Bidoof is a beast this generation when it becomes Bibarel. Simple ability + Swords Dance + Aqua Jet = A surprisingly viable route 1 rodent pokemon.

In Pokémon diamond I surprisingly fished a shiny gold magikarp which evolved into a red gyrados, in alpha sapphire I caught a shiny gloom (I think it was just green)...I've played most Pokémon games and I think those are the only two shiny Pokémon that I've come across :/ red gyrados was fantastic tho
Tbh I agree wholeheartedly. Some of the shinies this generation are kind of.. lackluster, compared to past gens. I daresay that I even like quite a few of your predictions better than what they've given us. Komala particularly annoys me- Komala's dex entry states that its log was given to it by its parents when it was born. Does that mean shiny Komala was literally just given a super "special" log? Because literally nothing else is different. It genuinely annoys me. They could've at least given it a slight hue change. Even I could've made something better [and I have: i.imgur.com/5jIiKpb.png]

You actually inspired me awhile ago to start making my own shiny renditions and predictions. Glad you like it! My editing skills are still rather rudimentary but it's fun to do, if not hard to find a good-looking color palette.

I LOVE IT. Why do all the colors have to change? If every color has to change, that just leads to some of the dumb looking shinies we've had in the past. Shiny Crabrawler is my favorite. Shiny Wishiwashi is cute.
I disagree that the formula change is bad in its entirety. I think its an improvement, but that won't stop GameFreak from making some really bad shinies like Komala (Komala does't even get a shiny, it just picks up a new log pillow)
E V personally I love the tiny change cosmog got, it doesn't have to be anything too extravagant and the player has to see that Pokemon a lot so I'm glad they played it safe

I kind of like sun&moon's shinies tbh. Especially incinroar where the white iMO makes it look a lot better and really.. i dunno, "pop" more.(though it leaves me conflicted since normal coloured litten and torracate are my faves)

It does, because he's a luchador/WWE wrestler. I love him for it as well, and the white just makes his outfit more appealing. Like, he resembles the Blue Blazer just in an all white outfit.
That, and milk white with crimson-orangey red does have that same feeling black with bright-neon green gives. Flamboyant, yet doesn't hurt.

I think it's great that they aren't forcing themselves into changing every aspect of the skin. They're obviously focusing on shinies that actually look good, rather than garish parodies of the original design. In fact, I can't think of a single ugly shiny in Sun and Moon, they all look great.

I've been playing this series since Generation 1. And TO DATE I have yet to find a shiny outside of that Red Gyrados that they basically give you on Gold/Silver......

Gumshoos: Darker brown. Rest if the fur turns pink.
Crabrawler: Different shade of purple, red claws and eyelid, and yellow parts turn a bit brownish.Bounsweet: A bit more pink, green changes to lavender, and the underside becomes yellowish.
Basically, Pikipek is the only one on screen that *actually* keeps most of their original coloring.
Bonus: At 5:54, Komala's fur is actually a bit darker.
While most of what you're saying is correct - Gumshoos doesn't turn darker brown, Crabrawler doesn't turn a different purple, Bounsweet isn't more pink and Komala doesn't have darker fur. I made those shiny images to exactly match the in game models and didn't make any of those changes. I'm afraid it's an optical illusion.
KangasKid18 I just checked them in paint. While I'll admit that I was probably wrong about Gumshoos, the other three are in fact showing different colors (and I did use the dropper tool in the same areas on both the normal and shiny images).
That said, I didn't realize you had edited them, and it's possible that those were unintentional changes you ended up making, so I can't really say for sure if they have actually changed in that way until I see the actual models. However, since you're not showing the actual models, your images aren't exactly very strong evidence of your point anyway.

Crabrawler is one of my favourite shinies since it gets red boxing gloves. shiny designs are way better than they use to be
It's better the the generic butt fugly yellows and greens we sometimes get. Strongest psychic pokemon in the lore and his shiny is a putrid green belly... christ. I think it's cool we're starting to see a more selective pallette, the mentality of changing every colour isn't a good thing to force. Seaking just looks like it was doused in paint and looks lazy.
Even then there still some pokemon that didn't adhere to this like togekiss. Also changing a pokemon entire pallette is not subtle. It's restrictive. Changing specific parts of a pokemons colours is subtle, taking the time to consider what looks good and what doesn't.

NeutralGuyDoubleZero well, you need to see some of gen 5s shinys. So many shinys which are just a slightly (very slightly) brigther tone than its original. I hate these kinds of shiny, since i want to show how special they are. But just brighten them up by 5- 10% is just not very special
I'm just gonna say shiny sandygast is cool looking. If you're a shiny hunter you'll like it. Something that is interesting I learned is the shiny animation in Pokémon Sun and Moon changed.

For the first time in ORAS I really felt connected to my team because of dex nav, I didn't get my first badge for almost a week since I was trying to get the best shroomish I could, drain punch, poison heal, guaranteed three perfect stats and maxing it out in amie and super training. I did this for my ENTIRE team. To me pokemon is gonna feel empty AF without it.

The best for me are abilities/natures. I mean, I can't even play pre 3rd gen games because of it. After that, I think the best so far has to be the HM removal. That for sure was the biggest pain in the ass that got decimated. Thank you VERY much, GAMEFREAK.

I do love how Lurantis adheres to its lore with its shiny though. The dex entry says that its coloration requires time and effort to maintain, meaning that it's not its 'natural' coloration but the result of careful grooming and a dedicated diet. Its shiny version is essentially how it would look like if it wasn't groomed for or grew up in a region where the required natural diet is not an option. With that entry in mind, shiny Lurantis seems almost primal which is really cool in my opinion.

With sun and moon they're most likely trying to make their shiny palettes less drastic than XY. because let's be honest: XY had a few absolutely ridiculous palettes. Like fucking Hawlucha.
Additionally they didnt change EVERY color on each Pokemon in XY shinies. Fletchling is a great example: the red on its head are both the same. And for those who don't believe me, go check out its ripped models.
I think having a balance between dramatic and subtle palette changes for shinies is best.
I'd kill to get a shiny Wimpod in Sun and Moon. It and the evolution for it are my favorite shines this gen.

I honestly don't get why people even hunt shinies all the time. Most of the time, the original looks better. That being said, it's just my opinion.

I read your comment and thought the same, it barely changed at all. But then I noticed the shaded parts actually did turn from pinkish to blueish. I wouldn't call that "the body", but it's what he meant.
Are you sure about the "next suitable palette" thing for G/S/C? Having done quite a bit of gen 2 romhacking; the palettes aren't exactly as set-in-stone as you make it sound. The two colors that aren't black and white in a sprite only take up three bytes apiece (these being the red/blue/green color values) and can be freely changed. The Clefairy and Jigglypuff lines' shinies could have easily been much different if they had wanted to design them that way.
All the info I could find said that the palette changed to the next one in the code - but to be fair there's not a whole lot of info out there. Perhaps it's the case that they could just change the RBG values... I wonder if there's a way to prove that.

what about umbreon? I believe the only colors that change are it's eyes and rings, I'm pretty sure the body stays the same shade
That may have been the case in Gen 2 (not sure) but in all subsequent generations Umbreon is a subtly different black color. This is the kind of thing I'm talking about - the colors that don't receive a major change on a shiny should at least get a subtle change.
I'm fairly sure Gen 3 Umbreon has the same black.

I actually don't like shinies that much. I mean, I like the concept of pretty rare different-coloured pokémon to reward and spice up the search for them. But I actually dislike most of the colours they choose. I like Espeon, for example (specially in that 3D model), and I like some others as well, but most of the other ones are so weirdly coloured it disappoints me. If I could choose the colours, I would make them more "natural". Great video, though! Thank you for the information! :)

Espeon is one of my top 5 favorite shinies. it's shiny version looks so much like a Carbuncle from Final Fantasy in my opinion

Starters aren't locked, but you have to go through a cutscene like in XY. All the legendaries appear to be locked though.

Espeon's original Japanese name is Elfie so no, not an alien whatsoever. Design wise it has elements of a fennec fox (the ears), a carbunkle (the jewel on its head), and a Nekomata (the split tail and the cat like elements in its design).

No, the point is that complete palette change = good. If that comes in the form of a dramatic change, good. Subtle change - also good. But a shiny that only changes a small portion of the colors - very very bad.

I consider Umbreon's shinies to be one of the coolest in the game, but, even thought it was a gen II shiny, I really don't notice the difference in Umbreon's black coat between normal and shiny, only the change in pattern and stripe colour. I would rather have a dramatic change in just one part of the Pokemon, like Umbreon's rings changing from yellow to blue, than a very subtle change to all of the Pokemon... Like Pikachu's slight yellow change. In my opinion, if the change is noticeable, than its good, whether it's to the whole Pokemon or just part. For example, I think Pikipek's head feathers staying pretty red isn't that striking; whereas Gumshoes' stripe going from yellow to pink is a pretty big change, even if the rest of him stays the exact same colour.

I think some of the best shinies are ones that only swap one accent color (like lugia, giarfarig, dunsparse, luxray, Xerneas etc) Its enough to change up the pokemon in a nice way without being too gaudy.
But a hardly-visible shift to the entire pallet just seems... pointless to me. Like no ones ever excited about a shiny pikachu, just bored. like even if they only changed its cheeks to blue or something it'd be more interesting

I think you don't know what subtle means. Changing someone's hair color, which is a LOT of them, is not subtle. Hell, even changed eye color is far from subtle.

A few, yeah. You'd likely not tell a shiny pikachu as shiny without seeing a normal picachu by the side for context.

To me the reason that current shinies just loos so... gross, is because the color don't compliment or flow with one another. They seem to be really obsessed with jarring contrast, and contrast can be great but they dont even try to make them look clean or smooth and it just ends up looking like someone ate paint and threw it up.

Damn, you opened my eyes! I'm playing the Pokemon games since 1999 and I never recognized any shiny stuff. I first heard about shinies when I was already playing X and Y and I never found a shiny. But now as I saw this video I recognized, that my boxes in Gold and Silver were "full of shinies". I just never thought they were special.
You won't wanna believe how happy I was when I encountered a shiny Honedge, I had battled people online with a shiny Aegislash and I immediately told my self "I NEED THAT!". Shiny Aegislash is one of my favorite shinies.
I hate that purple-flame typhlosion just became pink from gen 3- onwards.
It's probably the most disappointing change in any shiny, imo. Purple is such a rich color and to get rid of it is stupid. His flames aren't changed at all anymore. Although, honestly, it doesn't matter much with his Gen 6 model, as he only has flames out when he attacks, but still. Purple flames would be so much more unique.

To say game freak was "lazy" in not changing the Pokémon in the way they used to is simply false. Do you really think it's that hard for them to change the colors? They had an idea as to how shinies would be in their new game and stuck with it. Simple as that. You may not agree with what they did but it certainly wasn't out of apathy or laziness... just sayin
I'm afraid you're missing the point of the video - it's not the color choice that bothers me, those are largely fine. It's that many of the colors don't change at all, when there should have been at least a slight hue change to make it a good and decent shiny.
Them keeping some of the colours the same seems to be intentional for the sake of making them look good, though. To say that changing all of the colours is a requirement for a shiny to be good or decent just doesn't make sense to me - while their new method of making shinies may not be something you or I like, I'm sure there are plenty of people who like them more this way. It's all just subjective at the end of the day.

i really love the new process of shiny creation. shiny crabrawler for example is one of my new favs, it looks way more tropical than the regular. some older shinies just look like they threw in random colours at the pokemon, not necessarily bad, but i think this new method has more thought into it
The shinies weren’t made by color swap. Take Persian and Raikou for example, and the shinies look pretty different, and it wasn’t a pure color swap, but a bit more complicated than that.
i really think shiny hunting should be done away with. If not, then made EXTREMELY hard and tedious. I hate it that there are people out there with hundreds of shinies just because they chain fished for 4 hours. I've found 3 shinies by myself and they were all random. You'll never forget that feeling when you find one, but the feeling is lost for a lot of people now, and it ticks me off when i see tons of shinies on the GTS asking for ridiculous trades.
i dont think theres anything wrong with shiny hunting. not everyone cares about shinies, but for the ones that do, theres methods to getting them. getting it randomly is still exhilarating but then again, there are ways to get the shinies you want which is also good.

I've played through pokemon Diamond, soul silver, black, white, black 2, white 2, and moon and have had one shiny... and it was a green stantler. It was in Soul Silver (btw im not including the red gyarados), and I was trying to catch entei. The entei had just ran away, so I started to go heal my pokemon because they were pretty low from the gym battle, and like as soon as I take a step after the entei encounter.. BOOM SHINY STANTLER! I was so excited. It's name is Mesmereyes and it's my favorite.
They're getting rid of the shiny-hunting methods? That's disappointing... Shiny-hunting was something I really enjoyed; It gave me something to do after completing the Pokedex.
The Masuda method is still there, and it's much easier to get the Shiny Charm now. Just catch all 300 or so Pokemon in the Alola region, as opposed to the now 700+ Pokemon there are

I've only gotten one shiny from Masuda method, a Lapras (and I was just breeding for Wonder Trade). That's mostly because I find it to be the most annoying method besides random-encounter.

WIFI Toaster I actually did! It seemed frustrating at first, but the Dexnav/Pokeradar methods are about equally time-consuming. I'm happy to know there's still an easier way to shiny-hunt than hatching hundreds of eggs.
