Right, well I'm convinced. Soft brim all the way, and nice vest.

You certainly sold me on the cloth brim! Not only do they look much better, but the way you sew them together with stiff canvas makes them rigid enough without an insert. It also naturally lends a nicely-rolled look to the brim. Another problem with rigid brim inserts is that if they're not sewn into or molded into a rolled shape to begin with, they are very difficult to roll and to keep in a rolled shape, especially if they're plastic. I have several commercially-made engineer's caps (including some of the last adult-sized OshKosh B'Gosh fitted and snapback caps) where the brim, despite me trying to keep it into a rolled shape, just goes flat again and looks cheaply made due to the cardboard insert inside. And speaking of those cardboard inserts, I know all too well about the lumpiness of the brim after hand-washing them.

    This video is super helpful!
I made my engineer hat with a plastic insert. After two years of wearing it every day, the brim is worn out. Every time I put the hat through the wash and dryer, the brim got worse. Like the plastic insert was cutting into the fabric.
After watching this, I'm gonna replace it with a cloth brim.
