Just picked a FS5 up and I enjoy it more than The FX30 probably because it’s a cinema camera. I wanted to move away from the dslr style. Has the raw upgrade as well so if I feel the need for higher quality I have that option.
Another great review. I’ve been leaning towards the FX30 for some time now and I think I’ll be getting it for my b cam. Side note, the audio seemed a little different from your regular vids. Wonder if that was intentional.
Audio was a problem when filming with my a6400 for some reason. Working out the kinks. Fx30 is pretty reliable. Just note 1.5 hours in recording 4k on a single battery if you don’t use a battery bank.
The groundbreaking spec of fs5 at the time, was the form factor, the variable nd, but the most important was the external recording. Would love to see some external recording comparison with fx30.
Man I've been subbed for months and love the content, you're pushing me away from lumix and towards an fx30 or maybe a 3 if I can swing it... especially since my s1 is at panasonic right now, and I bought the 18-105 f/4 for my a6k cus of your video on it's cousin the 24-105... But I just gotta say. You look like tucker fowley from Danny phantom. I just placed it and can't get that outta my head.
Thanks sticking around 🙏🏼 Panasonic seems to make what Sony video users wish they had, just want to keep the autofocus haha. Otherwise new Panasonic doesn’t seem so bad and maybe some more glass. 😂 thanks for the Danny Phantom reference. I used to have hair like that, before the glowing part haha
@@MikeBSalazar I remember when auto focus didn’t exist, I don’t even remember being worried about it ahah. Now days, it’s the thing! I think I may like the cooler looking color science as well.
@@MikeBSalazarwell Im a actual film director over 30 films now an industry dont use auto focus its consumer friendly for those thats not professional…school taught us when film making aways use manual focus an rack focus to different object or use tape for different focus points..but I do love a good auto focus but if thats the only problem with the fs5 for film makers in your review im getting one because i use manual focus anyways thanks
Have both also. Hate form factor of mirrorless - FX30 is def bang for the buck though. FS5 internal is great in HD - codecs not solid enough in UHD. You have to be super carefull with exp and WB. Work with FS7 also - same sensor but much better internal codecs in UHD. So if you need a old used "cheapo" 2nd hand ENG style camera get the FS7 instead. Of course its a doubious "investment" in 2024 - its like buying a well used car and running it till you scrap it. External raw works great but you really need to know what you doing since 12 bit linear raw disintegrates with heavy noise in the shadows when underexposed. And recorder ads to bulk and weight. I dont care to much about ibis. For the run and gun stuff i do ergonomics and speed is most important - and solid codecs that hold up as often I dont have time to light or even whitebalance correctly. So the real gamechanger is built in ND on the big Sonys - its just INFINETLY faster and easier to work with than any other solution. I cant stress enoough how much time it saves you - even on shoots where you have setup time. Its the biggest ganmechanger in the history of run and gun / docu stuff ever. Looking to upgrade to an FX6 or pref FX9 (because of S35 mode which is A BIG FUCKING DEAL in terms of glass selection). just cant live without build in ND.
Thanks for the input. I hear the comment often that some video shooters will not invest in a camera without ND and rightfully so. I thought the FX6 didn't come with S35 mode. I hear that most people are just zooming in with clear image zoom. Definitely with much of those drawbacks of the FS5 alongside autofocus prevented me from keeping but man...that form factor.
Since I started using the bmcc 2.5k, and compared it to differents cameras like the a6400, the a7iii, a7iv... I have decided to go far away from dslr. Now am looking get between the Sony f5 or fs5, and the Sony f55 or red raven if my money can allow. Sorry for my English.
@@MikeBSalazar the form factor is not an important point for me. It's because I notice that cinema cameras are in a very different world even in term of image.
I didn’t quite test this enough but with the minimum ISO of the Fs5 being 3200 for SLOG 2 and 3, and the FX30 having base ISO of 800 and 2500, the low light is more favorable with the fx30 with the noise. In my studio without noise reduction, the noise is noticeable on both but its a little worse with the fs5 for me.
@@MikeBSalazar brother please add portrait photography as well actually I'm going soon starting to make content like vlogging, fashion videos.... Portrait lenses for full frame please ❤️
Good stuff man. Portrait lenses for Full-frame, my go to's are Zeiss 50mm f/1.8, Sony 85mm f/1.8, consider the Sony 135mm f/2.8 g master and Sony 70-200 whichever version you prefer.
By itself, I liked the FS5, just not suitable for me for what I'm looking for. Most people recommending the FS5 MKII if anything. You're using the FS5 in your productions?
Which form factor do you prefer?
Noise, same iso please
I have 3 FS5 and 2 FX 30 2 A7III. I love them all :)
I prefer the C100mk ii FS5 form factor. I just wish the bmpcc 4k was in that format.

Yeah I tried to salvage whatever audio i had for the Aroll.
I have a fx30 but want a fs5 mkii. Looks more filmic then the fx30
Right? I still look back at the footage once in a while. If it only had reliable autofocus.

FS5 wins , more control options available on the side. ND filers too! Good review!
I still love that form factor
Bro, what happened to the audio?
He probably recorded to two different channels instead of equalizing left and right for mono
Hey man good video but your sound is so quiet, need a louder mix for folks with shitty phones like mine.
Yeah that was my bad. Using a different mic setup for this video.

What would you say is a great cinema camera for under $1000 that could beat the FS5 in 2024?
Can’t say I can meet that criteria but canon c100 is comparable.
Which one is better at low light?
The FX30. More acceptable ISOs
FX30 has a higher bit rate on raw out...16bit made into log vs 12 bit linear. Does 12bit linear retain more detail than 10bit log?
I would think so but I haven’t personally recorded out to prores raw with the atomos.
What about shooting in a sunny day with the fx30 with out viewfinder, can you see the image?
It’s acceptable for me when I use the “Sunny Weather” setting in the brightness setting.
@@MikeBSalazar Thanks, I don’t use cebra or instagram so normally it’s hard for me using just the monitor
