      Well if you want to take a whack at it, you could always first use a baseball bat, but never ever should you use a plastic jug to catch a flow of fluid like that. These RUclips videos are certainly informative, and highlight what not to do, to determine what to do.

    Manchew just wanted to give you some pointers on your tractor. I have had and still have a couple myself. When you change the fluid you will have 3 drain plugs. You need to pull all three of them to drain all three chambers. Your tractor takes 5 gallons of hydraulic fluid to fill all three chambers. This fluid runs the transmission, 3 point, and rear end. The rear end drain plug will be a small 9/16 underneath the rear end where your draw bar hitch is. You can fill your tractor with fresh clean fluid from two points. The plug next to the shifter or on the side where your dipstick is under the seat. That is also known as the inspection cover. When you pull the plugs the oil comes out fast so be ready with plenty of catch pans. Enjoy your 8n they are fun to work drive and tinker with.... Clint

      I realize this is an old video but gonna reply anyways. The three drain plugs that are mentioned are part of a shared sump between the rearend, gearbox, and hydraulic housings. Oil moves freely between the three chambers but there is a wall between the 3 cambers that holds 1/2 - 1 gallon of oil in each chamber. You need to pull all three as was mentioned to get ALL the oil out of the tractor. Now here is a tip for those of us that don't have a cut off 50 gallon drum to catch 3+ gallons out of the front or middle sumps all at once. Pull your rear plug first, it's the smallest. You'll get somewhere between the first 3-4 gallons of oil out of the tractor in a much more controlled fashion IE less likely to make a mess. Once the rear sump is empty then you can pull the middle and front plugs and get the 1/2 to 1 gallon of remaining oil in those chambers out.

    With the help/guidance from a friend, I am restoring my father’s 1941 9n. Ive learned how to rebuild the carburetor, change the oil and next is the hydraulic oil. This video was educational and humorous...love it. I was asking a lot of questions during the other tasks. My friend will be surprised ( and probably relieved as he is a man of few words) when I tackle this with minimal questions. It nice listening to Charles reminisce about his childhood and working on his tractor/farm while learning about my father’s tractor. Reading the other comments also educated me with regards to running diesel in it to clean out any water. My husband rebuilds old jeeps for a hobby. Always thought it was gross, getting his hands dirty etc. I now understand why he does it. The satisfaction I get when I complete each task far outweighs, what I thought to be, any negative aspect. Getting my hands dirty is part of the fun. I think of all the times my father worked on this when he was young. I wish I had taken an interest in it when he was able to teach/help me. Anyway, thanks for the great video. Don’t mind the haters. Some people are miserable, and misery loves company. I shared this video with my husband and he has been laughing out loud.     Thanks for sharing your experience. Just bought my first tractor as well - a 1948 Ford 8n. My research seems to confirm that the transmission, the hydraulics, and the differential all share the same reservoir. I also wondered why there were three drain plugs. Please keep the videos coming of tractor maintenance and repair. Your shared experience is greatly appreciated.

      I also have a 1948 . The transmission , differential & hydraulic system take the same fluid. They have low points , hence the 3 drain plugs. You can buy an owners manual that tells you all you need to know about servicing the unit. Enjoy your tractor , I certainly enjoy mine.

      Likely answer might be the simplest if one plug is leaking it can't drain the transmission and rear differential and vice versa the hydraulic res. But this is a logical guess rather than proven fact. Pure supposition.

    Thank you for this video and the comments below. I took a whack at this yesterday and was ready with some big buckets but still made a mess! I did figure the oils was shared but did not know about the walls between the chambers. Now it makes sense why the fluid from the transmission drain plug came out milky white but the fluid from the hydraulic pan was much darker. AND, i didn't know or didn't see the third (rear end) plug plug so THANKS for that!

    Thank You! I've been enjoying my 8N since buying it from someone who once had it overhauled. I too was wondering how to change gear oil including the hydraulics, I felt your pain in learning what and how to do it but now with your video and some comments from those who have done this I feel much more able to do a good job and know how much volume required.

    When full of watery lube it's best to drain, then install drain plugs, adding 2 -3 gallons of diesel fuel, Not gasoline, run at idle for 30 seconds or so. Shut down and drain the cases. Then refill with correct lube from fill hole on transmission, by the shifter.
    make sure you have a good shifter boot in place as well as a proper dipstick. They help keep out contaminants.
    Also if drain plugs are rusted stuck a little heat from a propane torch and several moderate taps from a brass hammer should getter done.

    to be honest you didn't come out as though you'd only done this a few times, you made it very clear this was your first time, its a good video I especially like the syphon demo for training it that's something I would've tried now I won't. When you checked the trans you admitted not checking it ever, your commentary it priceless easy to understand and is easy for a shade tree do yourself, can learn a lot, like me Thanks Manchew

    Thank you for your video! I have a Ford 600 and found water had gotten in my hydraulic fluid 😢. I’m going to change all three; transmission, hydraulic, and rear end. I think I have the same problem you did and I appreciate your showing me how to do it😉

    Thanks a lot. I inherited what I was told was a 1937 9n. I replaced the carb and was told it really is a 1947. Still learning. Having hydraulic issues now, so I am going to follow your instructions. Just have to get the correct oil first. Thanks.

      As you were taking that bottom drain plug out I knew how that would go as I did the same thing and got splattered with old creamy oil. I was laughing so hard as I knew how it would end.

    Glad you got it figured out! Luckily for me, I had a good friend go with me when I bought my 52 8N a couple of weeks ago, who really knows 8Ns, to look it over and give me some great advice and tips. He told me about the servicing, and how the rear end all takes the same fluid, but I enjoyed you figuring it out for yourself like I would have had to do if I didn't have my friend with me...lol. Good video bro.

    Awesome job brother. that is how you learn. I've got a 1952 8N and love working on it. I was a bit nervous when I started working on mine but did tons of research and dove in. I was a Motor Sgt in the Army so you can accomplish anything if you take your time and use your head. I just made my own forks out of an old Chevy tow hitch and two solid steel bars. Works great moving lumber up here in Maine

    You did the exact same things I did on my 8n! I didn't have a video camera, and RUclips wasn't even imagined back then, but now folks van share your learning experience.
    Great job! My 8n took mineral oil rather than tractor hydraulic oil...you'll notice that your hydraulics probably still worked with all that water, but it sure make the oil look nasty. Clean oil works better and makes me feel better...probably also the same with you.

    1:25 drains the rear end and hydraulic fluid it's combined, the plugs on the bottom are for draining the pipe plug and the big plug he showed are sumps open them all up and drain them , make sure you have enough containers since it'll be like 5 gal of oil +water amount of water.

    Good job. I've got a Ford 1940 9N. Pretty much the same thing, although the dip stick for the hydraulic/transmission fluid is up by the starter and filler cap. I thought I read somewhere that although there were 3 chambers (1 for the transmission, 1 for the hydraulics and 1 for the rear end), and therefore there were 3 drain plugs, there was only a single filler point. I'm glad that your video confirmed that. Can't wait to change the fluids on her this weekend. Might even change the bush hog's blades too while I'm at it.

    I have a suggestion. Due to all of the water in your sumps, I would pull all e drawing plugs starting with the rear one first, it is a smaller hole and will not make a mess. Let all the oil drain and then remove the other two. Then replace the drain plugs. This part is going to help you get the water out. Instead of filling back up with oil put 5 gallons of kerosene or diesel in it. Next you need to disengage the pto so the hydraulic pump will not run. After you have done all of this take your tractor for a drive for 10 minutes or so, this will help the kerosene or diesel move around in your tractor and will clean that water and some sludge out
    Next you will want to drain all of the kerosene or diesel out. I would let it set for a couple of days to make sure it all drains out. Replace plugs and fill with the oil of your preference. Do not go by the dipstick. Pull the inspection bolt out of the side cover and when oil runs out you are full. Some say mineral oil because it is a gl-1 oil and it is yellow metal safe. I do not use it as it is too thick for my liking and in cold weather it is not good. You decide what you want. Good luck and treat her good. Keep a tarp over her.

    Thanks for vid ! Helpful here ! I had an old v8 marine engine that the block rusted through inside ( unseen ) and put lots of cooling water in the engine oil , within minuets of runing engine ( new oil / filter change) the new oil turned creamy white.Thats what water can do to oil !

    By looking at the condition of your hydraulic oil and all of that black muck filling your cap it would be a good idea to pull the access plate to your hydraulic pump inspect , clean it out you might be surprised what else needs your attention there since your putting in 5 gallons of fluid, glad I did.     When it comes to tasks like this getting the stuck drain plug out. I used to break my back with hand tools and ratchets and breaker bars. Then I bought one of the 1/2 inch Dewalt impact wrenches that have 1,200 break away force and call it done...

    I just want to say love this video. I am new to homesteading. We acquired some property in Montana that came with a 1959 Ford 641 Tractor. Like you I am new to this.
    I was just curious how your tractor has been running with the new hydraulic fluid. What kind did you use? And would you recommend it to someone now? Thanks for any help. Oh, and im new subscriber.

    Wow.....all this is sincerely educational. I'm on my first tractor Massey Ferguson MF-3165....and have no idea how to change the hydraulic fluid and it looks as bad as this one compared to the dipstick. But this video kind of give me a starting point.

    This is a real late entry but here goes!! The oil that fills all three chambers in the Ford 8N, IS NOT HYDRAULIC OIL!! The correct oil is like 75 - 90 weight GEAR OIL as specified by the manuals for these tractors!! Hydraulic oil will be O.K. as a temporary fix or flush as it is not a heavy enough oil for use in HOT summer weather and may increase internal leakage in the old hydraulic system
    Always refer to your manuals, as these tractors were built before "Hydraulic oil" became a standard in the tractors of the 1960's and later!! engine oil should be 30W or 40W in real hot weather,
    in colder weather use 10 - 30 oil in the engine.

    Dude Off the Grid has it right as do whatitis; the only addition I have, is only fill it to "low" on the dip stick. Anymore and it flows onto your brakes and soon you'll learn how to replace them.

    Seriously, good job getting it changed, really... your tractor will thank you. That stuff was AWFUL. Join one of the many tractor forums AND research the job you're going to do on the net, even RUclips BEFORE you start. :)

    My Yamaha WR450F has (7) drain points when changing oil. You assume correct. These are low points and areas where oil gets trapped.

    That isn't the correct oil for a Ford 8N! These tractors do NOT take regular hydraulic fluid! These tractors use gear oil in the transmission, differential and hydraulics. Regular hydraulic fluid will NOT protect the differential or transmission properly!

      There are substitutes for the mineral oil. Technology has improved since these things were first made. I picked up some today at tractor supply today.

    My grandfather taught me to never use a pipe wrench on a hex head bolt--never. Pliers too.

    before you even put the oil back in you need to seal the dipstick opening. that is where the water is getting in. How you seal it? Well anything can be changed to be closed that is up to you. The boot on the shifter needs a circle clamp to keep water from running down.

    Hola, ¿Ese líquido que echaste, era líquido hidráulico o aceite normal para motor? ¿Por qué echarlo a través del medidor de aceite? ¿Ese aceite va hacia la caja de cambios, la transmisión o es sólo para la parte hidráulica? es que el motor se compone como de 3 partes no?, he visto videos donde ponen aceite adelante, cerca del radiador, luego en el medio donde está la palanca de cambios y también atrás, como tú hiciste ahora, no entiendo bien, no hablo inglés, perdón!

    lol, all the gear box chambers are connected so pull all 3 plugs that's the low spots in the gear boxes this will drain all the oil, it then takes 5 gallons of oil to refill it.

    when I do an oil change I let it flow on the ground, it filters down and will be cleaned. duh how is the best way to filter water if you are in a survival situation you run it through soil

      thanks Scott ! i was hoping i wasn`t the only one that saw that , USE a wrench with teeth------ only----- if you can not get plug/bolt loose with smooth jaw type tool . 1 more time with that pipe wrench and it will be time for a new plug.

      That could have been the original fluid or the tractor was in a flood. I say he is lucky that never cost him a hydraulic pump!

      Head gasket on an 8N is a piece of cake, relatively speaking. you might even be able to do it without taking off the gas tank.
