If you want an especially compact cord reel that is very high quality, check out vacuums from the garbage. Particularly Miele, but many high-end vacuums have SJO cord and very high quality small reels. I have a 50 ft I took out of a Miele and it is only 6 in across and 2 and 1/2 in thick. Nice big 14 gauge wire too. I don't know why but the reels that are made to attach to the wall or ceiling all seem to have the same failure point, the triple click before it starts to recall the cord, this does not exist on vacuum reels, there is simply a button that causes the cord to retract

I have the 80' version of this and although it was not cheap I have been very happy with it so far. It reaches almost to the end of my drive way. One bit of advice is to carefully unreel it to its max (marked on the cord itself) and then drag it out to get an idea of where that max length is while out in the yard/driveway/shop. Having to fix it after unreeling it past its limit is a pain in the a$$ to fix.... especially when the cord is as long as it is.

I’ve been thinking about a cord reel for my garage redesign, and I appreciate the brand recommendation! 65 feet of 12 gauge extension cord gets heavy to wind and unwind by hand, so that’s one task that I won’t miss having to do.

That is a beauty! The 12ga is perfect and the drum looks well made. Awesome review! 😃👍

Now I need to fix the yellow one again that I got in the "poor mans flea market" many years ago... :D

This particular cord reel is built really heavy duty and enclosed. The mounting looks like an afterthought. I wonder if they are trying to compete with "turtles"? It does look like the outlets would be up and out of the puddles and the cord would be protected with it on its side. That would also explain the multiple outlets

Looks like a nice reel, not much more expensive than the one I bought at HF and likely sturdier. I'll give it a look when mine fails--thanks!

Nice review but I'm missing something here. You should be able to run 20 amps safely through 12 gauge AWG @ 120V. Assuming you're on a 20 amp breaker of course.

Romex is rated for 20 amps when using 12awg, but for some reason extension cords are not. I wonder if there is a safety factor mandated on extension cords that romex does not have? I have read comments about not using extension cords while they are rolled up as inductance can cause them to heat up, though I've never had this issue. Maybe they are derated to prevent this?
