    What is your favourite lens for video or photography?

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  5 лет назад +2

      @Kris Paterson That's the thing about zooms. They give you this flexibility without need to change the lenses all the time. Primes are great, don't get me wrong, you can't get the same dof with any zoom but zooms are often just easier. I take only my 24-105 with me when traveling. Good all rounder.

      Can not use zoom lenses for general photography; use them only for theater and concerts in the 75-150mm (FF) range. For general photography, my favorite focal lenght is 40mm (FF).

    Bought it. It's unbelievable sharp. The build quality it's incredibile. Probably one of the best sony lenses. I switched from 24 70 GM, and this think it's equally sharp, similar build quality (a bit more plastic), less heavy and has the image stabilizer. Thanks to the oss you can go down with the iso. The unique case where the gm is better is for sport, when u need really fast shutter speed, but in some cases even 2.8 it's not enough!

    Hi Pav, I really like your video. I want to upgrade from my Sony 28-70 kit zoom for photos and the Sony 24-105 seems to be the answer to the only lens I need especially since you said it also has a good Macro capability 1-3 and also the only lens you use for video. Your complete raving on the quality of it just re-enforces what I heard from other videos about this lens.

    I have been watching your videos for less than a year, but you have replaced some other photogs in my feed since then.
    I am considering a 24-105 f4 for my A7riii & A7sii or the SL2S. I am trying to replace the Sii with the Leica for studio video. I’ll keep the Sii for gimbal location video, for which I have been using an A6300. At least that’s the plan. I have all the focal lengths covered out to 600mm. Except I use a Sony video lens in studio, but I have a hole between 85mm and 150mm for outdoors and event. Being able to work well on or off gimbal and with video and stills.
    I’ve commented about how great your content i. So when I started narrowing down to the 24-105 f4, your reviews matter. I bought a Tokina 85mm 1.8 on your recommendation and it is my favorite lens. After watching this video I think this lens would be perfect for what I do.
    You should know I have the Sony 24-70mm 2.8 which I have used the heck out of, but I often feel the 70mm is not enough reach. Which is why I bought the Tokina.
    I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Hope that made sense. By the way, you have come a long way since you made this 3 years ago. Best Regards, Tim

    Very interesting perspective. I have heard people say that the Sony 24-105 does a lot of things good but nothing great. I think I understand what they mean . . . sure, there is no way to compare this lens to a 135mm f1.8 / 400mm F2.8 /24mm f1.4 etc etc. etc. . . obviously. But this modern lens paired with a Sony a7iii yields excellent results all things considered. I would say that this lens does MANY things excellently, and nothing, 'amazingly'. . . . but those 'amazing' lenses only do 1 or 2 things 'amazingly' and cost well over twice as much. The 'amazing' part of this lens is it's versatility as you have demonstrated very well. Good job on a different perspective on this lens. Thank you.

      E.g. you are shooting in dark conditions - with 35 1.4 you'd have 8 times more light than with 24-104F4, which translates into ISO 2000 vs ISO 16000 ...
      If ISO is important for you, you may consider buying Tamron 28-75 instead (which is cheaper and optically excellent) and keeping 35F1.4 for dark shots.

    I have this lens on order, and it will be the lens I will use more than any other. I already have a TTArtisan 11mm. THE ONLY BIG PROBLEM WITH THIS Sony LENS FOR ME is that I love macro photography and, according to all info I read, this lens SUCKS when it comes to macro. I probably shoot macro 40% of the time. I just cannot afford to spend all the THOUSANDS on lenses. I bought a few extension tubes and will try them but will lose so much that way. Too bad for me, cry, cry, cry! I should have got the a6400 because you have to be a millionaire to afford lenses for the a7iii.

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  3 года назад

      it's not a macro lens but as I have shown in my video, pretty ok for close-up photography.
      Try getting some of those screw on macro filters - they reduce minimal focusing distance.
      I'd search for old Sigma ones on ebay (they don't make them any more) as those are really high quality glass unlike the really cheap ones now.
      Whatever you do, you will need more light or a tripod to get sharper results

    I have had my copy repaired under warranty due to focus problems from new and it still has major issues after being fixed... Focus doesn't work (manual or auto) unless you turn the cameras on while the lens is at the105mm position, turning the cameras on with this lens at any other focal length will leave it in an un-focusable state. All images at any focal length show the metadata at 105mm. This is the worse lens I have ever owned. SN-19039xx However great review, I just wish I had one that works properly. $2,000 dud ;-(

      unlucky, very unlucky. I had mine for over 2 years. Had it drenched in salt ocean water, dropped and abused in any possible way from the day I bought it ... still works as it should. Never had any problems with it.

    Versatile Yes , but simply no where near sharp as a prime
    my 85mm 1.8 though restrictive in many places, pics are ultra sharp
    each to their own, nice review

    Versatile...that depends on your needs. For me it would be useless for what I do. I hate titles like on this video.. thus thumbsdown. Tame it down in the future.

    Can you use auto focus on video mode Pav?

      Yes, very well as well. It doesn't hunt either. It just goes into the focus like you would do it manually, smoothly.
