AAWireless: How To Make Android Auto Wireless | Wireless Android Auto USB Dongle Review and Setup

  • In this video we will be taking a look at the AAWireless. This USB device allows for you to use your Android Auto system without needing a wire between your phone and car. Normally to have wireless Android Auto you needed a special (and usually aftermarket) head unit installed in your car that actually supported android auto wireless. But with the AAWireless, you are able to plug the device into your car and create a wireless connection between your phone and car. When you're done with your car ride, you're able to leave the AAWireless in your car (usually plugged in) and it'll be ready to go when you come back to your car.
    AAWireless is a direct Carsfi alternative.

    Hmm, I bought the Carsifi wireless AA adapter. I received it last week and so far works very good! I have a 2016 GMC Sierra Denali and the minute I open the door my radio turns on and the adapter connects to my phone within 3 seconds. The only downfall is that when I turn off my truck the radio stays on for about 3 minutes and then it turn off. Some factory default setting I guess! So, as long as the radio still on, the AA wireless dongle still connected to my phone.

      Great question! With the AAWireless, you plug it into the USB port you would normally plug your phone in for Wired Android Auto (if you car doesn't have AA then this won't work for you). Your phone will then connect directly to the AAWireless first over Bluetooth and then over wireless (5GHz or 2.4Ghz depending on location and settings). This does NOT use wireless hotspot but instead have a direct wireless connection between your phone and AAWireless.

      The adapter uses both Bluetooth and WiFi, essentially at a high level this is just a screen projection from your phone so any data usage would be from your mobile phone. Android 11+ has built in functionality where the phone will setup an adhoc hotspot for the aawireless to connect to automatically without you doing anything.

      The AAWireless only works with Android devices, you would need a apple version for wireless carplay. The AAWireless requires your car to support wired android auto to function, it will not add android auto capability to your car if it doesn't already have it (your wording kind of makes it sound like your car might not have android auto at all so I just want to make sure you were aware).

And if I have to take it to the dealership to have them install a wireless version of the control panel in the car I may as well get a brand new car and just sell the Civic. Sounds like the AAWireless would be a great fit for you then! The only thing is because of part shortages still ongoing it looks like orders placed today won't be fulfilled until January. They have been open with whats going on and send updates as the factories they use send out parts but that's a long time to wait. You could look into using your old android phone to pretty much do the same thing the AAWireless will do and the process is developed by the same people who make AAWireless, it's just a bit involved ( more can be found here: forum.xda-developers.com/t/android-4-1-proxy-gateway-for-android-auto.3813163/).

    • @BeardedTechGuy

      So I did some testing over a longer period of time.
      In 30 minutes on a Pixel 3 streaming YT Music and with GMaps running navigation the battery went from 95% to 88%. So a 3 hour car ride would probably drain 50% of the battery (lots of buffer space mathematically it would only be 42%).
      In a 5 minute time frame on a Pixel 3 streaming YT Music and with GMaps running navigation the phone charged over wireless with the built in wireless charger in my Telluride from 88% to 90%. So realistically, the wireless charger should be able to keep up and allow for unlimited usage.
      Neither instance increased the phone's temperature even with the case on. I imagine if running for a few hours you'd probably see a temperature increase for the phone specially if using wireless charging. Me personally anything over a hour car ride and I'd probably want to use a wired charger or just not bother charging at all depending on the situation.
      Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the video. I have a Telluride on order and I also ordered AAWireless. I was wondering if the USB port on the Telluride is always on or not. If it's always on, would that mess with my phone in the house when the car is parked in the garage? Would it be a power drain concern? Just don't want to have to plug something in every time I get in the car because that would kind of defeat the purpose. Thanks.

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  3 года назад +1

      For the telluride (at least in the 2020 SXP) the data USB port will turn off 5 minutes after the car is locked and will turn on as soon as the car is unlocked. I park in my driveway close to the house so if I am in the front of the house it will stay connected to the AAWireless for the 5 minutes which once in a while is annoying but I just turn wireless off on my phone and my issues go away. I'll test tomorrow to see if / when the USB port turns off if you don't lock the car, as I know people tend to not lock their doors when parking in their garage.

      @@MCTronix Okay so power does turn off on the USB port used by Android Auto after 10 minutes of the car being off, even if unlocked. Opening the door or pushing the unlock button (even though its unlocked) will restore power to the port for 10 minutes. It does take longer for the power to turn on for the port compared to unlocking the car after locked but as long as you're giving the car a few moments to "warm up" it shouldn't be an issue.

      Correct you just need Bluetooth turned on. After your phone pairs over BT your phone will even turn WiFi on for you and connect.

      Most phones will detect that there is no Internet connectivity and stay connected but use cellular for data. There are a handful of devices that have an issue with this, but they are listed on their support site. I'd recommend taking a look at it before ordering.
      Currently that is not supported with the AAWireless. The phone has to be directly connected to it over WiFi which means your phone cannot be used as a hotspot. They indicated they would look to include that function in a future update but at this point there is no time frame. I would say at this point just assume that it won't be possible.

      Before this, with wired AA, I had to root my Android, install Xposed Framework with SAAX, Sensible Android Auto: Xposed. And each time AA updated, it would break the module (it seems intentionally) and then I have to wait for the dev to update SAAX. It was a real pain.
      As for the limitation, it was something like 6 Taps and the screen would prevent any more taps, and long lists would be truncated so it looked like you were missing a ton of playlists, which might prompt you to fumble with your phone. You can have two phones paired to the AAWireless. On power up, the AAWireless will connect to the last phone that it was connected with if both are available on power on. So if Device1 was last connected to the AAWireless and both Device1 and Device2 are nearby on power on Device1 will be used. If the previous device was Device2 then Device2 would be connected to. If you wanted to switch which phone is connected you would want to make sure BT and WiFi are off on the previously connected phone.

    I heard a 1hr trip with Android Auto wireless ON in phone could drain 15-30% of battery. Can you tell me more details on this since you have a Pixel. Using wireless is it battery efficient ?

    before I buy it, though, can you confirm that there is no point in the setup that requires a USB connection to the phone? I just plug the AAW unit into the car's USB and it automatically connects wirelessly, right?

      No the AAWireless is only for Android Auto with requires an Android phone. You would need an apple carplay specific one such as ( amzn.to/3qeYVG9 ). I have no experience with any of them though so I can't speak to if that one is a good choice or not.

    Does anybody knows how the system react when you have wireless connection, but few moment later you want to charge your phone and connect it to car’s USB. Does the system change connection from wireless to wired and makes some problem or hickups? How it works then?

    • @BeardedTechGuy
      @BeardedTechGuy  2 года назад

      When you disconnect the AAWireless from the USB port on your car then the wireless android auto connection will drop. Once the phone is plugged in Android Auto will start. This works fine on my Pixel 3, but if you have a phone that's a bit under powered its possible the switch might cause a bit of delay.
      For me, I use the cigarette lighter with a USB-C charger to charge my phone. It charges much faster then the car's built in USB port.

      @@przemyslaw.niewiadowski If the other USB port is just for power there wouldn't be an issue unless your phone doesn't like being plugged into power while doing Wireless Android Auto (I've never heard of that being an issue). If the other USB port does Android Auto as well, I'm not really sure how the phone will handle that situation (I'd assume wire would be preferred)

      I don't have a list. If you go to the bottom of their website ( www.cpeb.it/ ) there are a list of headunits that AAWireless have been connected to. You can search by manufacture or model there if you are looking to get a specific headunit.

      For my car (2020 Kia Telluride) I am able to change the song and volume with my steering wheel, but not able to trigger Google Assistant. This is the case for either wired AA or AAWireless, so the functionality appears to match through the AAWireless.
