- This is a fantastic video given to us by the incomparable Tony Phillippi. His company, TPAero, owns both of the only remaining flying examples of the Howard 500. Tony has been a great friend to the Fagens and a tremendous asset to the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum. His contributions include the Jeep used during the D-Day Invasion General Omar Bradley, fine art, and other rare items.
Here is an excerpt from Tony's comments on TPAero's website: "In the 1950s, Dee Howard, and his legendary mechanic, Ed Swearingen, pioneered executive transportation with their conversions of military bombers. Seeking the ultimate in radial engine pressurized business transport, Dee relentlessly pushed his crown jewel, the Howard 500, to production. The Howard 500 was put into service in 1963. It was the last radial engine passenger transport built. Dee built 17 Howard 500s for a select Who's Who of industry and entertainment. Today, pilot after pilot, mechanic after mechanic, approaches and walks around N500HP with reverence and respect."
Over the years, owners have loved the plane because of its comfortable, spacious cabin and the magic of its departures and arrivals that impassion once again, the aviation industry.
This plane is part of aviation's romantic past and best times, deservedly receiving Grand Champion before more than 1 million people at Oshkosh in 1997. When she arrives and departs, those who love aviation gather for the joy of the moment. It is a privilege and an honor to have cared for this magnificent airplane."

You can see more about this incredible aircraft at www.tpaero.com.
My father JACK ROPER was LBJ'S pilot far awhile when he was governor of TEXAS. I got to take a few rides in the 500. It was a beautiful aircraft. Pretty cool for a boy at 7 years old. Thanks for the ride back.
Beautifull airplane, and magnificent landscapes the America of Tocqueville, that we Europeans love so much, and last but not the least the soundtrack. Oustanding greetings from Lisbon Portugal.
I forgot to add that Dee Howard must be smiling thanks to you I also want to thank you for keeping these great old birds flying which takes a massive amount of work. Once again well done !
Wow, thank you for the awesome post! Beautiful aircraft!
I used to work on Dee Howard and Ed Swearingen's alarm systems in their houses and offices and Dee Howard Aviation at SAT. I got the chance to speak with both men many times. Amazing men with such a love of engineering and planes and automobiles. Dee had an amazing car collection and a shop at his house that would make you cry. Ed had some beautiful cars as well, a V12 Cadillac and some nice Jags as well. Dee's collection was amazing. They don't make men like those guys anymore.
Outstanding! Well done sir. I can't imagine when the last time two Howard 500's were together. It makes me want to go and get to work on our Howard Super Ventura.
Rode in one once, beautiful. Love the music with it Just sets it off and makes it even better.
In the 5os and 60s My Dad flew a Lodestar for P.R. Rutherford Oil in Houston, TX As child I 'helped' him fly it home from California where they bought it and where it had been made into a very nice executive plane.
The Lodestar was sent to Dee Howard in about 1961 to make it into a sort of Howard 250. What a gorgeous transformation it was with the long windows and nose with radar and all the other aeronautical goodies.
I have been in the Howard plant lots of times in San Antonio and as a teen I was fascinated with the manufacturing process. These planes(the 500's) were brand new planes not re-hashed Lodestars and PV'2s It was pressurized as I remember and really not an old Lockheed 18 at all. I rode in a couple of the 500's and they blew my mind. Screamingly fast and a commanding presence. They were all beautiful and drew a crowd. Sadly they were soon replaced by Jetstars, Gulfstreams and Sabreliners. Along with the Lodestars and DC3's went the B25's and On-Mark Marksmen and the two Martin B26's of Texaco oil. Houston Municipal airport was a super place to plane watch when I was a kid. Oilman John Mecum Aced the other companies when he got his DC8. I caught hell from Dad after I asked Mr. Mecum if he had gotten a good deal on the plane. I had known Mr. Mecom my entire 12 year life and thought I was being polite. I am 72 years old now and remember that like it was yesterday.
What a great opportunity to see (often) SOME OF THE FINEST PRIVATE PLANES ANYWHERE. Top of my list was the Texas-built Howard 500.
This video captures the majesty of the plane. Good job and thanks very much for keeping this fond memory alive.
The elegance of this flying masterpiece is immense.
Absolutely beautiful!!!
The real crown jewel of classic and modern aviation, this plane is the most beautiful aircraft i have ever seen on RUclips, now i dream on watching any of the two in person.. Also, great footage and combination with the most beautiful landscape
This is the best film I will see all year. Love ALL the film, but especially N500LN over London - how did I miss this event?!
Who ever did all of this can go and check out of this world in peace , has done it all !!
congratulations , E B.
I believe that belonged to Bruce Stevenson, a lifelong friend. We were supposed to trade rides in our planes. He got his ride (in my LongEZ) but he died before I got mine. He was about 54 when he died twenty years ago. He told me he had 1.6 (million) into it. He also told me to keep that under my hat because if his dad found out he'd kill him - LOL.
Nice video! Question; with two PW R-2800s, why the music?
That is REAL style, REAL class!!!
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT!!! OMG!!!! That is the most beautiful twin engine aircraft I have ever seen in my life!!!! I just watched this video and when I saw this airplane, my jaw just hit the floor!!!! OMG!!! I want to fly this plane so bad!!!!
Wow- Beautiful! Helps me image what NC33604 would have looked like flying over some of the same locations- NYC Grand Canyon and Sedona
Friggin Great !!! Wonderful, thanks for posting !
Amazing!
Great video, fantastic aircraft!
That was very nice. Wish I can go for a ride.
An amazing airplane. I have seen it at Oshkosh several times. One of the last boardroom bombers and maybe the best!
Howard 500 is a state of the art .
I'll hopefully see this amazing bird at the airshow at AirExpo 2017.
Magnifico!!!
BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!
just saw this amazing plane parked on the ramp today!
so much more class than a gulfstream !!!!
Like Art Deco in motion :-)
There is another great Howard 500 video.
Search
Howard 500 the journey home.
WOW... My first thought was Lockheed Lodestar (Hughes' conversion) with P&W r 2,800's. A primo drug running plane back in the 60's & 70's :-)
That thing would really move with all the military gear removed and two R2800s on it !
Great Plane!
Hot Damn ! I need on of these for my company... Dan HOWARD Aircraft Sales !
hola muy buen video saludos.
Ahh man, I'm in love. Thanks, I needed to get rid of some of the slobber from my mouth. That must be neat to be able to go home and crank up the computer and bring up ol'Milton Shupes digital version of your Howard 5 double ohhhh! Hey was that a DC/3 I saw at mile marker 1:42 ?
They look a LOT like a Lockeed Loadstar, but with bigger/better engines. Those are really pretty airplanes :-)
Beautiful plane
The Magnificent 7 theme!!
👋👋👋 BEAUTIFUL 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
That's style! on a ramp full of 'ho-hum' LEARS and 'me too'GULFSTREAMS when these big boys rumble up to the ramp EVERYONE has there eyeballs out on sticks looking. With a LEAR it's 'I'm here' with a HOWARD it's 'I'VE ARRIVED'.
Just me, but I prefer the more period correct blue and white scheme over the East L.A. taxicab Co. scheme, but it's his money and these two airplanes show he does have taste and flair.
LEARSTAR or some such
Up engined Lockheed Lodestar
Let us hear the engine....
what music is this? i think I recognized from some old western movie....
elmer bernstein main title and calvera
Its the Theme of the old TV Show "Bonanza" even everybody in West Germany watched that show... In Commie East Germany they did go to jail for watching it... no joke.
The Magnificent 7.
Scratch that last question. Damn! I am not worthy... forgive me for I have sinned.
Realy good thanks FLY BABY FLY what it should do
Good video RUINED by the music. Only music that SHOULD have been there would've been provided by the Pratts.
Kill the music crap! We want to hear the PLANE!
