I could listen to Pete Shelley talk all night. Such a lovely, intelligent and gentle man with a wonderful voice, and what an ear for melody! Buzzcocks were like no other band of the time. From the get go they were completely themselves.
Unlike the Pistols, The Buzzcock's song lyrics were nearly always about love of some sort. Pete was the mastermind of the band and luckily i got to meet Pete after a gig at The Kirklevington Country Club near Yarm. We had a good chat about music and the gig. Great bloke and will be sadly missed by Buzzcocks fans. God bless ya Pete. R.I.P
Pete Shelley was such a nice guy, as well as giving us great music. I didn't know him, or met him; but sometimes, with some people, you can just tell. Love his solo stuff x cheers Pete x
@@rubyredjeans well that is great, thank you for sharing your memories! When I heard Homosapien for the first time, I was really blown away by the new sound and art direction; i.e., the video for said song. There is some kind of lurking message, in & over above the lurid onslaught of imagery that is interesting in itself. Wow, it's late and I'm well stoned, going to watch it now. Are you in Oz then? I'm in London. Just thought I'd say hello
1:26:55 Wow! Pete Shelley sums up what punk meant to him "For me it was about being an active participant in your culture rather than being a passive consumer, I'll have that on my headstone"
In the early 80s there was a serious and brutal 'war' between Teds and Punks in Amstderdam. I was there and knew nothing about it. ( I'm a german ). I walked with my girlfriend to buy me a Rockabilly Jacket at the Flea Market. I wanted to look like Johnny Rotten. I had bleached blond Hair and considered myself as a Punk. I put some of my Badges on the Jacket and we went to the central city. In a Shop, some of the Mohawks saw me in my half-Teddyboy-Style and came over to grab me. Than he saw my Buzzcocks-Pin and let me go. I was a tiny, weak little Kid and got almost shitting my Pants. I still have this Buzzcocks Badge, that saved me. 😂
There is no The. It's Buzzcocks, that's it. That was the point. There had already been The Kinks, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pete Shelley deliberately dropped the definitive article so that Buzzcocks were new, and nothing to do with what had come before
I've seen most of my heroes except the Stone Roses. Had tickets to see them but life got in the way. The Psychedelic Furs were excellent, but man the Buzzcocks would have been great!
I saw Buzzcocks perform live in concert quite past their key years of punk. I saw them in 1989 and 1993 here in San Diego, and man did they rock out. Two of the best rock music shows I have ever attended! At the 1989 show, the audience became so enthused and rollicking that the first 4 rows of folding seats and occupants collapsed backwards in a heap. Must have been akin to the momentum of their earlier days of shows, I felt. Just loved them, and especially how melodic they could be.
I went to watch the Buzzcocks at The Free Trade Hall in Bolton near the end of British punk scene, Must have been early 80's. What a fantastic night the place was jumping. The music was fast and loud. Great memories thanks for the music
These guys are heroes who look and act like regular joes, which is the coolest of all. There's no topping what they did musically, and they did what very few bands pull off- picking up where you left off and continuing on being as creative as before.
Supported the Buzzcocks bout 30yrs ago..I wandered past their dressing room and said a quick hello..Steve and Pete were just sat staring at the door..they weren't putting on makeup or rehearsing..what you saw was what you got..I went to see them a few months later coz although we supported we didnt really get to see them..they really were just as I remembered them from 78..loads of energy..so sad when Pete died..just wish that wasnt true
I felt sorry for Shelley in this. Boon was on a big "I am" ego trip and Diggle was pissed and wouldn't shut up or let anybody else get a word in edgeways. Shelley just sat back and let the two of them get on with it instead of taking umbrage.
Buzzcocks Brilliant band 1st saw them live age 14 in 1979 supported by Joy Division & loads over the years the most important band in UK punk more than the Pistols etc D.I.Y Record label / Gigs etc R.I.P Pete Shelley & wish they would not let Americans do anything connected to UK punk one thing they can't & don't understand & they over analise everything etc
The sound card is up all the way and the speakers are up all the way as well. They just have a twit handling the audio. Look how long it took to resolve the crackling noise of a bad connector at the first of the interview, then someone's mic wasn't even potted up on their console or whatever cheap ass piece of sh!t mixer they employed. The next video on RUclips will blast out at +24 and blow the speakers. TV & video people usually don't know anything about audio.
Steve Diggle's aunt doesn't live far from me, I often see him walking along Bispham cliff tops, near Blackpool. Shame about Pete Shelley I never did get to see them live. I've heard they're still going i'm not sure if they were on the "Line Up" at Rebellion, Winter Gardens, Blackpool, August 2020. But it got cancelled ,like everything has, due to COVID
He does like the odd drinky poos in the right setting of course,as do many from the North in UK,cos it gets so cold and it still is basically a boring shit hole, all glass and chrome and homeless folk everywhere ya go,they gave the city a lick of paint and thought thst mskes us so modern and up market now, corropt council, was 40 odd years ago still is.
iI think its pertinent to say without these guys there might not have been a Joy Division, and so no New Order, Smiths, Fall et all... future members of the previously mentioned were at the Sex Pistols gig organized by these guys... after which they all decided to form bands.
I love the way Mr. Diggle waxes philosophical about being on the dole (What do youngsters call it these days?) and Mr. Shelley seems to have turned into a big cuddly Steiff teddy bear.
I love punk music, pop, electronic, and rock. That said, the absolute worst thing we can do is make any of it a mainstay in mainstream academia. It’s supposed to be marginal, rebellious, and on the fringes. Punk was born of poverty, anger, and frustration. The guys on that stage did what they did because they were skinny, hungry, and messed up in the head. The minute you put them up on a pedestal it’s over, and not only that, our culture itself is corrupted. I say stop patting them on the back, throw these lunatics out on the street, and it might create a punk revival. Kudos, by the way, to whoever f-ed up the audio on that mic. It proves my point.
I always wanted Buzzcocks to to get a spot on The Young Ones, I remember I would look in the TV Times to see which band was on that week, at least my favourite band The Dmaned got a spot, and wrote Nasty just for the show! I couldn't stand Magazine, it just didn't connect with me!
So funny to watch Steve Diggle get into it with that self-important tosser Boon, fluctuating between 'you weren't in the fucking band' then give him hug. RIP Pete.

I sprayed painted 'The Buzzcocks' on my 1979 Datsun B210 when I was 19.
many a buzzcocks fan would point out to you that the name is Buzzcocks,no The in Buzzcocks, important to many, esp those who are Buzzcocks.
@Government Enemy ! my 1980 was my best car EVER after owning eight wack wheels from Detroit built by union goof-offs
Well it is a pity you got their name wrong Eyda! There never was a The in Buzzcocks.
well I have loved the brilliant Buzzers for years and probly got their name wrong too.
Had a great evening, Pete and Steve were great blokes to chat with afterwards too 😀

First saw the Buzzcocks 1977 electric circus Manchester, orgasam addict the sound track to my teenage years, thanks for all the great music Pete RIP

Not the winter Gardens Tiffany's
Grew up listening to both buzzcocks and magazine wonderful teenage years wonderful bands.❤❤❤
The Buzzcocks were the Punk Rock Beatles, hit after hit after hit
Lovely watching Steve Diggle get gradually pissed. Top man. Beer was flowing. He kept checking the bottles lol.
Those, btw, are "nanny state" non-alcoholic beers. But they seem to do the job just fine with Steve!;)

My ban ELECTRIC STORM did a gig with BUZZCOCKS in 1977
Time goes by doesn't it? I remember watching the video for "What Do I Get" when I was a kid.
Despite the interviewer the boys turned out a great interview. RIP Pete.

Pete was quite under the weather as well I suspect.
Richard Boon & Friends
Never have I wanted to drag someone off a stage and lock them in a room so much.
Buzzcocks did more for punk etc than the Pistols ever did D.I.Y gigs / Record release Loved them since 1978
Or more simply they made MUCH better music than the Sex Pistols but many punk bands made better music than the Sex Pistols.
I think the Buzzcocks were like the Beatles of Punk and the Sex Pistols the Stones. Fair analogy ? :)
Pistols made 4 classic singles
Be punk make music vs. be nothing make punk
it's not a competition
Is Diggle pissed!
RIP Pete
Steve is funny as !! Brilliant
He is pissed.....and up his own arse as he always is. That said, he is an integral part of Buzzcocks, just not quite as important as he thinks he is.
I tattooed Buzzcocks on my left arm in Indian ink, when I was 15... I got it lazed off when I was 53
Why remove it?!?
Diggle sending the interview into chaos by getting drunk is kind of punk
@Hash LeeEven if they are Diggle must have been on the hard stuff on the side...

Not as often as Liam Gallagher says ‘d’ya know what I mean” I’ll bet. He can’t finish a sentence without adding that.

Too bad everyone in the comments is ignorant of the importance of Richard Boon.
Yep, he invented "indie" music and ignorant twats don't know.
I think Richard Boon is under the impression that people want to listen to him as much as they want to listen to the band!
