I say it again and again - I really love your collection. There is an upcoming import from Brazil and they have Cattleya nobilior tocantinensis. I can't seem to find any information on this - any insight?
@@nourlana5508 I think that one took it’s sweet time blooming. I probably had it as a seedling for 5-6 years before it bloomed at this was its second year flowering. I do have a care video for nobilior. I’ll see if I can find it…
Your giant, almost hand--sized flowered C. nobilior coerulea is spectacular!!! I'm just beginning to have success raising both those species. Of, course here in Gulf coast South Louisiana, I'm growing them on mounts.
Thanks! Sorry for missing this comment! I got this from Miranda Orchids and I know Francisco is breeding these guys. H&R might have some coerulea nobilior as well.
Just subscribed! You are growing my favorite cattleya types. The nobilor coerulea was jaw dropping but I'd like to have all of yours in my home. I will water mine more frequently after watching your video. I grow mine as well in clay pots with lava rock. Lost my longest lived walkeriana to rot this past winter. Now growing an H&R walkeriana 4N. Its growing quite well but probably 2 years away from blooming. Looking forward to seeing all your videos.
ResQuetzal Always good good to meet another walkeriana/nobilior grower! I’m sorry to hear about the rot! That’s always frustrating. Been there, done that, will probably do it again. 😢
Hi Stephan Just purchased nobilor amaliae, typo and walkeriana semi alba. I really had no choice doing complete repots as they were in floppy tall thin plastic pots with degraded bark. I have since repotted them in netted pots with medium bark, with a top coating of sphagnum moss. I plan on eventually moving them to clay pots but shopping during the pandemic is difficult. After they root properly, I will summer them outside until it hits 50 F at night, then bring them in for the rest of fall and winter. I live in Canada. Inside, they are on a SW windowsill, with supplemental lighting. I cut down the watering in winter, having found that the walkeriana does better with some water every 2 weeks instead of once a month. I've reviewed all your videos comparing the walkerianas and nobilor. I guess it is unnecessary to give amaliae drier conditions than tipo or walkeriana? I was able to bloom a typical walkeriana 2Xs year but lost it to some infection while it was outside. One PB turned brown, I cut it off, but then the rest of the leaves turned yellow and that was the end. I'm not sure how I could have avoided that. Obviously some moisture got inside a cut? I also purchased a SVO 4N walkeriana but it is a seedling. It's growing well but obviously years away from blooming. That one is in a small clay pot, lava rock, topped with spagnum moss. My question to you is, do you water with just rain water? Are you concerned with pH? What is the time release fertilizer you use and when do you apply it? Does that mean they need to be fertilized year round? Many thanks for any helpful suggestions or comments.
ResQuetzal Sounds like a great setup! I do water with rainwater but I used to water with limestone laden tap water and would use pH decreaser in the form of a citrus based product. I stop fertilizing all my Catts around mid November and start fertilizing again when players start growing again. I think your watering regime for walkeriana will work for amaliae.
Hi Stephen I have two cattleya walkeriana in flower I keep them on the terrace facing south. At this moment the temperature is around 10 degrees Celsius but do you think it is better to put them on the veranda always facing south west where the minimums are 16 degrees and the maximum is 20/21 C? Thank you
My Walkeriana is in first bloom now. Great info on bloom color! I’m like Todd on the summer rains here in Fl. I keep mine in a plastic roof covered shade house in the summer. Gotta get a nobilior. Thx
Hi Stephen, Hope you are keeping safe through the pandemic? Do you have any cultural tips for a rootless C. walkeriana? I recently acquired another C. walkeriana a coreulea form this time, it had a skinny new growth but no roots. I've had it for about 3 weeks now and no signs of roots or development on the new growth. How would you handle a plant like that?
Michael Brown A good friend of mine placed a nearly rootless nobilior on top of wet spag (not enclosed) until it sprouted new roots and a growth after a few weeks. I’d give that a try! Alternatively, taming the orchid has a good video from this year giving detailed instructions on how to revive rootless back bulbs.
I don't fertilize my plants from around November to March and I reduce watering to 1 or 2 times per week during this time. This is more about preventing rot in case we get cold weather than anything else!
Stephen Van Kampen-Lewis Thats fine to reduce watervwhen plant is ideal . but my question was ! What you do after they form buds till itbfinish blooming . Some said at thailand that they stop all kond of food / water . b coz they think if no food means plant strive hard and pull all nutration and push towards flowers .Thats how they makevflower grow learger and those stay longer time . I am confused , So asking this myth of not giving water when plant in bloom . But my general knowledge said . When plant in bud / bloom they need extra nutrition to keep growing plants to supply towards flowersv........ But people make different info.
Hamim’s ORCHIDS I don’t give my blooming plants any special treatment, either with or without water. I think the Thai treatment is probably a myth, like you mentioned!
Não falo inglês, sou do Brasil. Gostei dessa estufa, porém precisa de muita ventilação, pois as Cattleya Nobilior e Walkeriana precisam muito de ventilação, senão acabam sendo cozidas pelo calor.
JoeyMrTurbo Right now I’m testing “Purely Organic” fertilizer, which Sue Bottom has derailed in a recent (2016?) article for the AOS. She also posted it to her orchid society webpage in Florida. In July, I’ll switch back to nutricote for the second half of the year.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I have a Walkeriana coerulea x Alba but it is super tiny seedling.... who knows how long it takes to bloom. 😭 I want one or both in blooming size but they are expensive!
Plant s And other things They do take a while to grow! You can actually get blooming sized ones from Lowe’s for cheap. The clonal name of those plants is Carmela.
Oh no, I must have missed the nobiliors 😭 I've been looking for one for a while and the only one I saw at the show was a cross with walkeriana. It was a niceeeee plant, good deal too for the size, but I don't have the space so I'm trying real hard to stay focused on only a few wish list orchids.
EstreLLa is the spanish word for 'star' . . . it is NOT misspelled here, as 'Estrella da Colina' means 'Star of the Hill' , referring to the star-like shape/color of the flower. Living in Texas, one would expect the exposure to Spanish culture and language would lend itself to knowing this.
Let me know if you have any cultural questions!

Thanks for upload !!

You referred to a couple cattleya as walkeriana.
Ray Savoie Yep, there several walkeriana in this one!
I looked at the video again. Yes, many of my walkeriana have two leaf growths. That’s what exceptionally happy plants do!
Walkeriana has only one leaf
Ray Savoie Yep! Why do you say that?
