Its a great situation when you have so many spikes that you can't keep track of. :) Great collection of nobilors and walkerianas. My gosh I'm in heaven seeing them all. I have a smaller 4n walkeriana that originated from H&R, that grew a PB , and then a 2nd one late in the fall. It produced some very large roots off of it but the PB itself aborted. I wonder if it tried to flower at such a small size! Thanks for the cultural notes. You didn't mention the Amelie types, so I suppose now is not their spiking time. Happy growing.
The c. walkeriana that I acquired last year bloomed for the first time in October. Just one flower but my, oh, my! The scent was heavenly! I can't wait to see the blooms on your nobilor. They should be spectacular! :)
Hello Stephen, congratulations on your spikes, even though they are early 😀 I had to move mine because of night lights. Problem is the county just added one to the highway.👎 Too many people around here leave porch lights on!! I can't seem to remember, but I keep hearing it's not good to move cattleyas around, but you move yours in the summer to follow the sun, also we move them to green houses. (Help!!??) I am thankful you talked about the way you are watering now.(even though you mention it in other videos. Lol) My problem is I have alot with no ID. I have to say since I put them in river rocks they have all taken off like crazy!!! (Just too heavy for me) I use a medium to small rocks. Thanks for your videos!! They are very helpful 🙂 👍
This has been a weird year in many ways, some of them seem to affect plants as well. Always a pleasure to watch your Cattleya videos, só many spikes on the go. Looking forward to the blooms👌
Lots of useful information. Hopefully mine will bloom next year. I have one that is large enough to bloom but no signs of spikes so far. Thank you for sharing, stay safe.
Hi Stephen, these tours are always interesting, nice to see those temperamental spikes! I was not aware that walkeriana was so cold tolerant. I also enjoyed your grand Cattleya review with William last month and I learned with dismay that my looooong awaited percivaliana bud would be a stinker! But still very eager to see it after 2 years of suspense!
🤔 i was wondering the same about nocturnal light sensitivity. I peek in the tent most every night with a flashlight and, though only for a few minutes, wonder if it messes with the little walkeriana. fingers crossed they get their act together. nobiliors look wonderful, the friend getting a piece of the massive coerulea sure is lucky.
I think the flashlight is probably ok. It’s probably the all night lights that can be a problem. I think my neighbor turns his light off when he sleeps, so I’m not entirely convinced it’s affecting my plants.
@@SVKLOrchids I hope that's true because I have my C. walkeriana on a window sill with a grow light (50000 lux) that switches off after 10/11 hours during the winter. But obviously, I still have lower level lights (maybe 400 lux) on 4-ish hours after that... If they are really that sensitive to lower lights, mine will never bloom in my set-up.
@@SVKLOrchids 😬 I am leaving my place for two weeks over the holidays - let's hope two weeks of a 10-hour day are enough to get them into the mood haha
You're not alone with things blooming out of season. My Rcv Jimminey Cricket (B. nodosa x Rl digbyana) usually has finished growing and rests for the winter, this year two new growths with blooms coming. Dendrobium Jaquelyn Thomas is blooming again, she usually finishes in September and starts again in April. And two of the Aussie Den hybrids have the start of spikes and they never start spiking until February or March.
I have Jimminey Cricket crossed back with digbyana and it grows all year, but blooms this time of year. Interestingly, it never blooms from the sheaths it forms during spring and summer but from sheath-less new fall growths.
Hi Stephen, how do you handle cattleya base black rot, usually where the bulb meets the rhizome? How do you treat it and how do you avoid it? That has always been my problem with cattleyas. My other orchids don't get it, only cattleyas.
exciting that your plants have lots of spikes!!! I was wondering if the ants are feeding on your buds? I know that my Peony buds were destroyed by ants feeding on them. just a thought. cheers
That's unfortunate about the light at night, I hope there is some remedy. Do you think the light has tricked the nobiliors into thinking its an increased day length like in spring?
Hi Stephen really enjoying your videos! I hear a lot about Walkerianas being very rot prone. I recently bought a Walkeriana online and it arrived with either a new growth or a flower spike I can't tell which yet. It is in a plastic pot. I watered it this morning but the bark is still quite damp in the evening. Is it okay for the bark to be wet in the evening after watering? I am growing it indoors under lights. Thanks so much!
@@monikabobkiewicz unfortunately walkeriana won’t bloom if you’ve got even a slight night light. It needs complete darkness to bloom for some reason. Could that be your problem?
Great collection! So many spikes, Congrats! 👍☺🌞
Thank you!!

That’s a good question! I’ll have to check my amaliae!
Interesting video, as always. Lots of nice things going on! I know that orchids need darkness but I didn’t realize some are extra light-sensitive.
Yet one more reason walkeriana is tricky! lol

The scene alone is worth growing walkeriana!!

What are those little black cylinder containers with holes that are in your pots?
Those are the slow release fertilizer containers

No, luckily I don’t have any destructive ants! Plenty of katydids and grasshoppers though! 😮😲😵
During the summer time what's your humidity outside?
During the day it’s 20% and then shoots up to 80-90% at night

No, I think there’s something else getting them to bloom early. I don’t know what it is to be honest!

what are your cultivation temperatures? you bring plants into a period of drought ? I can't get her to bloom
They do get a drier winter, but nothing too severe. Are you growing walkeriana or nobilior?

Hey Stephen, Thank you for the video. My c walkeriana recently bloomed, it needs repotting (I think) when do you repot?
Repot when the next new growth starts sending out roots
Before blooming may be they should have long period of not watering at all, like at nature, they have bulbs and they should use it.
I’ve tried that and it does work. However, my Brazilian friends tell me it’s not needed and you get better blooms with some water, which appears true!
👍🏼👍🏼
