  • I sit down with Francisco Miranda to discuss Cattleya nobilior var. amaliae habitat with in-situ photos. Its truly amazing how much punishment this variety (or subspecies) takes! Francisco also gives cultural advice for this difficult to grow Cattleya and also shows some in-situ photos of walkeriana.

    So great to see. Just love seeing plants 'in situ'. So much great info!..On a sad note how much of Brazil is deforested..is being deforested. Look at our own country....we are paving everything as fast as we can, and still destroying irreplaceable natural wonders. ...poaching of orchids is a constant battle in the Everglades....sadly.

    thanks Stephen, we have so little information even in Brazil about them, at least not wide available. After I watched the video I tryed again to find further info about the diferent types, but it is hard. It is a pity that some people take plants from nature, a real shame. But in a country where education has neve been a priority and work is difficult I personally can not condemn those people. But there has been a huge move by professional growers to reproduce native plants here.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  Год назад +2

      Yes, people certainly have to eat! I’m glad that plant breeding is slowing the collection of these plants. Still, a sustainable harvest should be possible if only soak portions of each plant is collected.

    Thanks for doing this. I do wonder that by the time you go to Brazil that in many places all the orchids will have been robbed. And not just orchids but other collectibles (like cacti.) It's a problem that is not going away, though in this video Francisco suggested that collection of orchids currently is more targeted to trendy species.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  Год назад +1

      I sure hope they aren’t all gone! But you’re right that it seems like over collection is targeting certain types of orchids. I understand people are looting aroids and carnivorous plants too 😢

    • @SVKLOrchids

      I’ve got a bunch of videos in my collection on growing and bloom nobilior! I grow them next to my other Cattleya and treat them the same during the growing season. They get less water in winter than the other Catts, but that’s the only difference!

    What an interesting presentation! I have watched one by Francisco about Brazilian Laelias before. Very interesting!
    I actually got an amaliae recently. I also have a Cattleya nobilior tocantinensis. Tocantins is one of the states that amaliae lives in so I wonder if that is another subtype.
    The wild collection is such a shame. I really don't get it nowadays. If you want some more genetic diversity in your collection, just take a sprinkle of seeds and grow those or a bit of pollen but cutting down entire trees...
    So are we going to have the walkeriana talk as well? And intermedia? And loddigesii? And....

    • @SVKLOrchids

      So many species we could talk about!! It sounds like Francisco wants to do another, so I suspect we’ll chat about walkeriana next time! Also, I haven’t heard of tocantinensis. Maybe it’s another name for amaliae?

    Maybe I missed it, but what are the temperatures like during the rainy season and the dry season? If I'm not mistaken, I think the dry season is actually the cooler season with the rainy season being hot and humid.

    • @SVKLOrchids

  • @justtryandtaste8927
    @justtryandtaste8927 Год назад +1

    Never crossed in my mind that nobilior lives in such a hot and dry habitat. I have only one little pot of this plant with several bulbs, growing slow. Maybe I should not watering it regularly.

    • @SVKLOrchids
      @SVKLOrchids  Год назад +2

      I don’t let mine dry fully during the growing season, but it’s hot here in Texas and they love it. But reduced water in winter is good!

    Interesting that nobilior orchids grow in such a place and that they recover when the rain comes. You obviously have done well growing and blooming them but they need experienced growers I think.
    Hearing how the walkeriana plants are so callously collected and then discarded is painful.
