It's truly an underrated game that is Unleashed. Sonic Team without a doubt put the most effort into making that game as good as they could make it, out of all the other Sonic games. The music, the BEAUTIFUL graphics, story, the tone and just overall direction. Had a few things been changed, this game could have very well been Sonics version of Mario Galaxy. Seriously

OpticMel81 Incorrect. I have both versions on both consoles, this is easily noticed in Werehog stages or Jungle Joyride Day Act 1 that PS3 experiences lower framerate much more frequently than 360. One pro the PS3 does have over 360 is your movement is much more free and less _locked_ than 360's, but that's really all there is.
Wow, this is great. Definitely shows how motion blur (when done correctly) can really add flavor to a game, especially a Sonic game. The trick is trying to keep everything crisp and easily visible. It gets too blurry and it will ruin the experience, but get it just right and it could add to the feeling of speed without visually destroying anything. Great video. Heard you and quite a few others were having trouble with copyright claims on the Sonic music. Hopefully that gets figured out. I totally know how that feels, man.
So you mean to tell me if the graphics are more "crisp" then the motion blur when "speeding" wouldn't affect the visual negatively? Who would've thought? You cracked the code, please, design games.
Is it me or does the blur effect help with making it look faster ? Whatever it is, sonic & sega racing transformed could've needed more of it, it feels so slow for me.
segafan13 It's actually worse.Directional shadows don't affect Sonic, particles are cartooney and flat, the landscape is lackluster outside of the city.Only good thing is resolution and GIA
segafan13 Nope,it's complete.Unless they apply post effects and source code from Unleashed, which can't happen without the Japanese programmers that were replaced after 2009
TheRaveous TL;DR It was like that from the start (the mods return functionality, not necessarily add), so Op's point still stands. The enhanced visuals are shaders taken from Sonic Unleashed, which was PS3/360 only. They could barely handle it, as they are about the power of a low-mid end PC at most, so slowdown was frequent. Sonic Generations used Unleashed as a base, but removed the prettier parts to take into account that PCs had a bigger difference between them in terms of power, as opposed to all PS3/360s being about the same. See the PS3 version of Empire City. This motion blur, as you know, was added. Everything else stays true to the original. Still, this look in 2008 was fairly surprising, along with Mario Galaxy a year earlier.
That golden moment when the music syncs up with the gameplay. ✋️😔👌 0:10 Main melody: Boosts on beat and the melody kicks on the buildings, rails, and highways! 1:20 Super speed part of the song: Boost on beat and as soon as th cameea pans, you are running on the bridge and the music kicks off even more! 1:38 The music gets more intense when the robots shoot you two! 1:50 Out of danger and back in to the action! 2:15 Climactic part of the song: running across the building wall to the top, only to get sling shotted back to the main melody! 2:29 Ending melody with a call back to the bigining thanks to the incredible saxophone rift by the goal!
2:15 is crazy. I was a kid when I played the hell out of this game and could sometimes manage to sync it to this part. It always made my hair stand up, and still does!
boost gameplay may not be likeable by many people, ok, that is a matter of opinion, but sonic unsleashed was actually a really good game, even on Wii ffs, you can clearly see that the level designers wew giving it their best, nowdays they're barely trying, and it's not boost gameplay's fault, this coming from someone who personally prefers adventure games, before you call me a boost fanboy.
Rich M You it the nail on the head there. Everyone’s like “Forces wasn’t good so they need to get rid of the boost gameplay” and I think that’s bullshit because regardless of how good or bad Forces turned out that does NOT affect the quality of Unleashed (the day stages), Colors, and Generations. The answer isn’t “get rid of the whole gameplay formula” it’s “make a game using this playstyle but with actual good level design” which is 100% possible BECAUSE IT’S BEEN DONE BEFORE. Seriously Sega has the answer to making 3D Sonic games consistently good lying right in front of them and they just blatantly ignore it.
What’s interesting to note is that at the time of its release, Sonic Unleashed had mixed reception much like Forces does now. And years later when people look back at Unleashed, they appreciate the game more and give it praise that it didn’t receive when it came out. And Unleashed is a clear example of level designers putting a lot of effort into the stages. It must be hard for Sonic Team because it feels like when they put a lot of effort into a game it doesn’t seem like it’s appreciated until years later, but by that point it’s a little too late. As a sonic fan, the only way the series can truly be great is if the fanbase isn’t divided and is actually supportive of Sonic Team rather than bashing them and whining. I love the series and I want it to succeed. But it seems like the divisive fanbase it has makes it impossible to truly move forward
@Speedy V. Speedy V. Wouldn't it be possible to reverse engineer it ? People have already done that for some older titles. Though it is a much bigger engine, I doubt that Sega doesn't have the resources to do so, if it were possible that is.
Funny... one of the selling points for Sonic Boom was "First Wii U game to support CryEngine". And pretty much any other Wii U game looks miles better than what Boom ever did...
They are completely different, but I have so much nostalgia for the PS2 version. The 360 one though is a million times better. To the point where the only thing the 360 lacked was a consistent framerate and shorter wherehog stages
Me too. But when I finally got the hd version I could not bother to get there because the werehog levels are even more annoying and longer than in the PS2 version.
Something that I think should be talked about more in the newer sonic games is how the boost mechanic ruins the music. When you’re boosting it warps all the sound, which makes sense on one hand, but on the other it sacrifices hearing the awesome backing track, which for a lot of sonic fans makes some of these games so iconic for us. I mean even watching this video, the gameplay with the FPS and blur is great, but being able to hear the music entirely with it really enhances the experience. If it were muffled every time you boosted, it wouldn’t be as fun to watch imo. I wish and hope they change how boost cripples the music in future sonic games.
The thing that could truly bring the sonic series back to it's former glory is streamlined gameplay like this. (Yes I know what you're going to say but most level designs in the Modern Sonic games aren't like this. We need this, a real story(not the dudebro, over comedic story we have now, something like adventure 1 & 2), they could also incorporate other characters into the game similar to heroes but seperate Characters, unique level designs, music that just feels sonic-like, and the return some adventure gameplay mechanics added into the new style of gameplay. It would be absolutely fantastic imo. Edit: Also less tanky controls and less linear level design.
Unleashed was pushing the PS3 and X-Box's hardware with how detailed it was. Sonic Forces is incredibly detailed, just not so much as Unleashed. I think they weren't wanting to cause frame drops during gameplay so they haven't gone overboard with polys and textures and stuff
Butthurt Adventure fanboys who constantly threaten sega about how the boost gameplay is a rubbish idea because its "boost to win" or it "gets rid of platforming" have obviously not seen this video and not played unleashed and gens!!!
You know, i find funny that they call Unleashed and Generations "Boost to Win" and praise the hell out SA1 and mostly SA2. but mostly of the time SA2 (in my opinion) suffers for being linear and "Move foward to win", while SA1 at least has way more platforming than SA2.
Sonic has to run fast, its in his character description... The boost gameplay gives a better perspective of what Sonics speed really is, as opposed to being stopped every 2 seconds by a platform obstacle... For me, the balance between pure speed and slower puzzles is much more entertaining and visually stimulating than the original platform gameplay
tfw my pc doesn't even run low-poly stages like Aero Garden at stable 24FPS i cri evrityem Anyway, the Cinematic Motion Blur combined with 60FPS looks so beautiful.
Gotta say, even though I detest Sonic games (except Sonic Mania) from the past nearly 20 years, I've always loved this stage (born and bred New Yorker) and the soundtrack. These shaders make the stage look better than ever.
Graphically, Forces is one of the best. Just under Unleashed, which should have lowered the graphics a slight bit to maintain consistent framerate. Gameplay wise, Unleashed is better than forces. No doubt, but Unleashed had a full team of level designers, whereas Forces only had three, all of which were new to the series. The lead designer's first game was Lost World. This honestly looks amazing. It feels like it's actually 120 fps, with the motion blur added. By the way, I've got a modding related question on my mind for a few days now that hopefully you'll be able to answer. What's the location of the Homing attack particle effect in the game files, if it exists?
Link Legend Oh yeah, having a split-second moment where the framerate drops in Jungle Joyride (heaviest stage in the game) means that the game overall runs at 10 FPS. Genius.
@@jamjon6616 Skyscraper Scamper is still from Unleashed, even without the mods and playing it through UnleashedProject the game is still objectively the prettiest and best looking sonic game, I still stand by and say Heroes and Unleashed and Generations are the best looking sonic games
If they ever consider making sonic unleashed for PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, they should make it like this. This would be damn impressive for that. If SEGA only waited ten or so years more, this would've been a better game. My guess as to why sonic unleashed runs so horribly is because of the mix of the super high polygon count and probable lack of optimization.
I was about to say I hate motion blur, but apparently I only hate motion blur in low fps things like movies, this looks great and reminds me of old days of wipeout or new days with BallisticNG
This is great. Especially since it runs on an engine that can render photo-realistic textures and lighting effects, it almost feels movie-quality. Just slap the letterbox effect on there and call it a feature film.
It's truly an underrated game that is Unleashed. Sonic Team without a doubt put the most effort into making that game as good as they could make it, out of all the other Sonic games. OpticMel81 Yeah but there are PLENTY of situations where it's really low.
PS3 has worse frame drops than XBox 360 for Sonic Unleashed.

Could you do Jungle Joyride using Cinematic Motion Blur please? Thanks
Fancy FA, is 10 fps not blurry enough for you?
Link Legend Oh yeah, having a split-second moment where the framerate drops in Jungle Joyride (heaviest stage in the game) means that the game overall runs at 10 FPS. Genius.
My ideal Sonic game would be:
1. Unleashed style daytime stages (fast, motion blur, 60 fps, longer stages)
2. Small, yet interactive & OPTIONAL hub worlds
3. Unlockable characters for expansive gameplay
4. Bring back custom character
5. Difficulty spikes (insta-kill obstacles, pitfalls, rng quicktime events)
6. Light-hearted, yet interesting story with a simple plot
everyone's popping off on how great this looks when no one else is saying how in time Sonics actions are worth the music
Take as much time as u want and I love your work and people don't argue about comments
How a 2008 Sonic game looks the best more than a decade later is astounding.
This is a 2011 Sonic game with mods
@@jamjon6616 Skyscraper Scamper is still from Unleashed, even without the mods and playing it through UnleashedProject the game is still objectively the prettiest and best looking sonic game, I still stand by and say Heroes and Unleashed and Generations are the best looking sonic games
This looks awesome, i would love to play unleashed in 60 fps
Such a beloved character
If they ever consider making sonic unleashed for PS4, Xbox One, PC, Switch, they should make it like this. This would be damn impressive for that. If SEGA only waited ten or so years more, this would've been a better game. My guess as to why sonic unleashed runs so horribly is because of the mix of the super high polygon count and probable lack of optimization.
This looks amazing
this made the game look so much better then it probably is
Idk if you'll ever see this but is there a way you can remove the blue aura when using the sonic boom?
Mrhighstandards01 You mean the boost?
Plot twist: Empire City and New Donk City are the city just different boroughs...
I was about to say I hate motion blur, but apparently I only hate motion blur in low fps things like movies, this looks great and reminds me of old days of wipeout or new days with BallisticNG
My personal favorite for in-game motion blur would be what's used in Street Fighter 4. It's subtle, and only blurs as needed for 60 FPS.
2:34 for a scripted sequence that looks incredible
I thought this was a 2020 game like this is amazing how it really looks lol
I love the running animation for unleashed I don’t know why they changed it
Cos it looked stale, he only had one running animation in unleashed, gens I believe he had quite a lot, which just makes everything look better
@@Itz_Kwame bro had 2 running animations in gens what 💀
@@Itz_Kwame and this was from 2 years ago hop off
@@Kenshin-Xlll if you count no boosting yeah
@@Kenshin-Xlll it’s still a comment
Really wish I could go back to when this was uploaded.
Keep in mind this is basically what forces should be on ps4 pro and xbox one X
This looks as smooth as project unleashed to me.
This is the first time I fully listened to Empire City's music
Now this is blast processing!
This is great. Especially since it runs on an engine that can render photo-realistic textures and lighting effects, it almost feels movie-quality.
Just slap the letterbox effect on there and call it a feature film.
This is amazing, nice job
This looks beautiful
This I what sonic games should look like normally, if it’s possible
Holy shit I love that mix of jazz and rock
