the soap removes the surface tension of the water. You can demonstrate this by floating a needle on a bowl of water and one drop of soap will make it instantly sink
Water is a polar molecule. Which basically means it has a positive charge in one end and a negative in the other end. This is very helpful when they bind together because it helps create surface tension. This surface tension can be broken by soap because basically a soap molecule is hydrophobic in one end and hydrophilic in the other (one end loves water the other repels it) this is helpful because it can attract both water and oil as a cleaning agent. But it also means it can break the water molecules apart and push then away from each other. And my guess is the ink is hydrophobic and shares some of the same properties as oil in this scenario. Which makes it float on the water and then is pushed away when the soap molecule interacts with it.
i'm glad Yt put your video on my feed i love your energy and all those content are so fun to watch ! keep going Connor always having good these watching those video!
Try dragging the tip of a toothpick across the rings of ink. Also perhaps experiment with a drinking straw to blow the surface in different directions. Maybe there are some colored inks to add more possibilities?
I love the final results! It reminds me of a holographic look without the color. My family does a lot of woodworking and let me make designs on the wood sometimes. You just inspired my next idea!😊😊 Thank you!

Like swirl dipping guitars....drag through it to direct swirls through it! The swirling give another level of achievement or what kids call now "satisfaction". Deeper dip tank and you can dip larger objects like guitars, bike helmets, shoes, etc. This has evolved into "hydrographics". You can print images, dissolve and apply the print in a dip tank.

such a cool effect! i remember doing something similar, but as a science experiment (less artistic lol) from school that included black pepper and the dish soap on a q-tip. the outcome is the black pepper spreading out just as it does here!
This is what I was concerned about when I saw the DIY paper project :) I'm pretty sure that factory-made paper has some funky additives which keep it together when exposed to water. Nevertheless, great video! I love how every project is so simple, fun, and easy to follow!
I wonder if for the DIY paper, you could put some kind of mesh (like a cooling rack) into the water before you start dipping the ink in the water, so then when you want to take the paper out you can lift up the mesh
You could do the same but smaller version with nail paint and then instead of clothes use nails of your wife, I saw it online one time and they are similar and looks good 👍
I used to do something like this with nail polish. I think we called it “water marbling”? Very messy way to do nail polish, but it turned out super cool!
okay for the DIY paper, i think if you lower it into the water and then somehow get a mesh or something under it, you can get it out without destroying the paper
hey, i think it might transfer to DIY paper, you just need to add a mesh submerged under the container then use it to lift the DIY paper once the transfer has done.

The ancient Japanese art of suminagashi, which translates to "floating ink", is made possible by several scientific phenomena: surface tension, Density, Mixing, and Surfactants. Here's how these scientific principles work in suminagashi: Water surface tension: Allows artists to float ink on the water's surface Density: Colors float because they are less dense than water Mixing: It's important that the colors and water don't mix Surfactants: Surfactants, like soap, are added to the colors to control how they spread Artists use suminagashi to create marbleized paintings by layering ink and a mixture of water and soap, called "resistance", on top of each other. When the ink is moved, it structures itself into an abstract design. Artists can then transfer the pattern to thick paper by gently dropping the sheet into water and pulling it out from the side to let excess water drip off. After drying under something heavy, the paper will have a flat surface that shows the pattern. Suminagashi is the precursor to paper marbling, an art technique that uses designs to imitate polished marble. The practice also incorporates Japanese philosophy that emphasizes the value of nature, imperfection, and abstraction. The ancient Japanese art of suminagashi, which translates to "floating ink", is made possible by several scientific phenomena:
surface tension, Density, Mixing, and Surfactants.
Here's how these scientific principles work in suminagashi:
Water surface tension: Allows artists to float ink on the water's surface
Density: Colors float because they are less dense than water
Mixing: It's important that the colors and water don't mix
Surfactants: Surfactants, like soap, are added to the colors to control how they spread
Artists use suminagashi to create marbleized paintings by layering ink and a mixture of water and soap, called "resistance", on top of each other.
