The faces that Frieren made this episode stood out to me. I still see them sometimes in my dreams about Frieren the anime.
a funny detail, in the scene where frieren is traped by the mimic there are 2 more mimic chests open meaning she already got fooled twice
And the look on the other candidates faces, especially Denken, when they discover that the elf who took out the Demon King and broke Serie's barrier like it was a cheap Xmas ornament is the fantasy equivalent of a gatchapon addict. 🤣

Well Serie is also a notorious liar who tends to say the opposite of what she means so who can say with any honesty if she meant it when she said that because she also marveled about how Frieren flipped the world upside down when she destroyed her undestroyable barrier in under 24 hours after encountering it.
@@27westwest I don't know if you read the manga but Serie is hella powerful. She really could've killed the Demon King by herself but she really hated the fallout that an era of peace would bring (the wide use and stagnation of magic by humanity).

It's not because she already has them, it's because she doesn't like combat magic. Hence why when Flamme meets Frieren and asks her if she likes magic, she says she "loves" magic. Then when Flamme is old she asks again and Frieren answers she "somewhat likes it". (episode 10) It's because all what Flamme taught her is combat against the demons and it made Frieren dislike it. And that's when Flamme shows her the flower field magic and Frieren discovers the peaceful side of it and reignites her passion for "legendary folk magic" (as it's stated in episode 2 during the flower tower scene with Fren)

It could be all in my head, but I believe that Sense's clone was trying not to kill anyone, since Sense herself said that she is a pacifist, so her Clone must be like that too, so if you pay attention to the injuries she caused They were not in fatal areas such as the head and heart and practically all of them were hit in the shoulder.
You know something good is happening when the animation style changes, and Frieren mentioned she used this final attack 80 years ago, most likely during demon king fight.
The way Frieren's replica looked at Fern with such scary eyes xD This basically shows why you shouldn't really mess around with Frieren, That attack the copy did to Fern wasn't even detected as "Magic" so it was beyond Magic abilities which is scary.

The looks on everyone's faces when at the end, after Frieren defeated herself and the Spiegel, was ass-deep down the throat of a mimic... while Fern and Sense were smiling sadly off to the side. 🤣

I wonder what spell did she use there to hold Fern. From the looks of it, it's a channeling spell also prevents the caster from moving while it is being casted.
The magic circle is also not appearing from the wand, but from the ground. Fern basically said that it's the height of magic and doesn't use mana... like a magic that transcends the current magic system of their time.. hmmm God-tier magic?
Also noticed that the replica's Zoltraak is black? Like what Qual used( Human-kiling version) while Frieren uses white, the demon-killing version of zoltraak. great detail. didn't notice it at first.
I don't think the magic circle was made by the Frieren clone. It is for Frieren's gigantic Zoltraak which then killed the clone.
The way I saw it, the thing Frieren's clone did wasn't even recognizable as magic, and we learned from Übel that your visualization can bypass magic in some ways. Maybe Frieren (and her clone) can use that principle as well and say "ok, now gravity is going to crush you against the wall"
That look on her face said that Fern was just upgraded from nuisance to priority target.
The spells we know Frieren used in this episode:

I had the initial impression the lightning counterattack was just the golem reflecting the copy's magic. Golems are sometimes known for being able to do that, but I could be wrong. Still, if her copy can cast it, so can she.
edit: also - that glare... I think that's the first time Frieren has ever looked angry about something in this anime.
the glare maybe is some kind of gravity spell, fern doesn't feel anything aside from being pressed against the wall pretty much like a gravity spell to me.
@@Hans-uw9qe she made it known that she wasnt detecting any mana nor registering any type of spell that was casted, so it's either some form of magic that a human can't comprehend OR Frieren imagining pushing Fern up against the wall, considering the theme of this episode was the correlation between imagination and magic
I think ubel's cutting spell and freiren's glare spell are similar in that sense (hehe pun)

11:03 Spiegel. 8:03 As long as spiegel is alive, the replicas can respawn again and again, even after the mages destroyed them. As long as the mages are still inside the dungeon, Spiegel can create the replicas again and again. Even after they defeat the Frieren replica, IF Frieren and Fern take their time and not defeat Spiegel right away, Frieren replica may appear again and the mages will be in trouble because they will be tired and run out mana first while Frieren replica and other replicas stays strong.
Spiegel strikes me as less a monster and more of an extremely high level crafted defensive ward. The Dungeon heart/core trope covers this, but whereas a monster might move into a dungeon and set up a territory, the Spiegel seems like something integral to the design of the Tomb. A grand structure which had lots of automated magical systems like the eternally burning candles and whatever was involved with resetting traps and healing damage between past incursions. If you don't have such restorative magic, even a dungeon as potent as this would slowly be chipped apart by centuries of mages eroding away at the layers of traps. So I see this Tomb as very carefully designed around magic like the Spiegel.

For a moment there Frieren's replica was like :Really Fern? Sit down 🙄
Frieren tells Fern earlier in the story that ordinary offensive spells are enough to defeat today's mages. Cut to the replica fight and it's these crazy, flashy world ending spells. Frieren really is on another level.
And the rest of them never got to see that fight and will never know what Frieren is actually capable of...Denken would have peed himself.
What is even funnier than seeing Frieren stuck in that mimic is the fact that there are 2 mimics open beside it ...

This episode finally convinced me how much of a psychopath Übel is. How she smilingly killed that proctor and then proudly told Sense how she did it. Also, kind of threatening her, too.
Can't wait for season 2 fr it really only gets better and we get some proper long term story lines which are amazing

Nearly 80 years suggests that that spell is how she dropped the Demon King, and that Frieren is at least as powerful.
As Sense said: she's a pacifist. Even her clone specifically did non-fatal attacks that simply forced them to withdraw, but not kill them.

The fact Frieren clone was able to cast a spell even on her injured state goes to show how tenacious the real Frieren would be even at the brink of death.
The concept of being able to cut something because you can imagine it is kind of creepy if you think about it. Normal mages represent how confident they are about their skills, however, in mages with some kind of reality dissociation (like schizophrenic, personality traits or just disconnected from reality) can be a thing. Why am I mentioning this? Because it is clear that something happens with Ubel's mind, the way she enjoys killing tells us about some mental issue there. So it is quite curious how the author decided how mindset is so relevant and how this affects to not conventional characters.
The anime is really grounded in d&d rules but they don't make it obvious. Ubel would fall in the category of sorcerer instead of wizard due to her intuitive way to use magic and she probably has some kind of supernatural gift that lets her see the world in a different way to tap into her power. People like her are super rare tho and maybe less than 1% of all mages are sorcerers.
The magic ability is so strong but to a fault: it runs on the user's imagination. If done by a sane mage, the magic can be less effective. It sounds so counterintuitive, but if you remember that it runs through imagination, sane mages hardly "imagine" in a sense, because most of the time they think rationally.
Unhinged mages like Übel fit perfectly in these magic since they ignore the conventions set of having limited imaginations, hence the magic is broken in her usage
I do agree, but i also think Übels reasoning makes perfect sense. Magic is all about visualizing. Like i'm not saying she's not looney, but i don't think the way she explains her visualization is as deep as some people make it out to be. I think other mages could learn to do what she does, with enough conditioning.
I think it’s more about her just using magic through intuition rather than skill. She doesn’t understand magic and cannot see the defensive mana barriers mages use, but when she see’s a manifested barrier, like Wirbel used, she can’t penetrate it. And honestly she seems like a terrible mage. She has shown two spells (which she could only learn after empathizing with their original caster completely) and it seems like anything she can’t imagine cutting can stop her spell.
The animation is amazing, but the music!!!!! is insane, i love it

Ubel is the best sadist archetype in a long time and may be the best one of all time in my opinion. Maybe even better than Hisoka? Hm, that could start some arguments though.

Before the test started it's mentioned that no one ever in history managed to conquer this dungeon... so yeah, Sense is still a jerk and wanted to fail everyone, she just didn't calculate with Frieren.
"Pinnacle of Magic" the term used in the manga means its not just the height it is the highest point. Pure magic no staff no casting just visualization. And that height is not enough for Serie when it comes to Frieren. LoL
Well, if you want to get super pedantic about it, the original manga used 高み, which could be translated to "height", "pinnacle", "highest point", "summit", etc. It all comes out to the same thing in this context, though she also ended the statement with なんですね, leaving it a bit more open-ended, so maybe the softer "height" would be more fitting than "pinnacle."

Don't forget that without Frieren and Fern there wouldn't be a crazy strong mage guarding the Spiegel but likely Denkens copy. And I am convinced with teamwork the others would get around that obstacle.

We didn't see much from Fern's replica, so I'd say Frieren as final boss and Sense, who took out the most to forfeit the test
fern's copy is busy hiding but if it took a little bit more time to finish the boss i think fern's copy will obliterate everyone dunno about denken tho, but take a closer look at the scene where they show the aftermath of methode vs ferns battle, youll see the amount of destruction at the background caused by fern's clone.
@@Hans-uw9qe Methode is probably the third strongest mage there, after Frieren and Sense. In the manga she doesn’t even have the scratches and dirt on her, showing that she had a pretty clean and easy fight against Fern. She has shown the most versatility in her spells - detection, binding, healing, deflection and mean offensive magic aswell. Fern is very strong for her age, but at least Denken, Methode and Wirbel could take her on among the test-takers.

I'm guessing since both Frienrens are going all out they aren't focused on repressing their aura. So when Frieren isn't worry about repressing her aura, something she's completely mastered, she can instead very sneakily repress all aura of that particular spell her clone attacked Fern with, making it undetectable even during the attack.

Ubel's visualization is not exactly a talent as much as it is a mental disorder really. Consider this, when you see cloth for the first time you see it as a simple fabric. Whether that cloth is thick or thin, it is still cloth and you assume it can be cut right?
Now, imagine that that cloth is reinforced with carbon fibers or even thin metal rings. What would happen then? You identify the reinforcement and you know intellectually that this isn't just a simple piece of cloth anymore. It isn't something that can be cut with a pair of scissors and you will search for another way to bypass the new armor. That is the logical thing to do, that is what been able to identify a difference in a previous concept leads to. No matter the imagination you might have, there is no way a person would gaslight themselves in believing that a pair of scissors would be able to cut reinforced steel. That is what bewildered Sense.
Ubel is doing exactly that. She knew that the cloak in front of her was tank level armor, she knew that anything she threw at it would do nothing to it, yet, she actually believed that what she saw in front of her was not reality and that it was a simple piece of fabric! I mean who does that? Even idiots that do the same attack again and again against a fortified position believe that the attack will eventually work because the previous attacks did some damage, not because they actually believe that the new attack will actually work on its own. Ubel literary has programmed in her soul a belief that if something is cloth or hair as a general concept, then that something can be cut period! It's not something that can be taught, its not that I will convince myself that I can do something. She actually perceives this as reality no matter that it objectively is not. And she actually knows it is not in an intellectual level. That is why Sense is horrified and calls her crazy and her ability a superpower. Because it is actually something that IS crazy and Ubel IS crazy.
And that is where the limitation of her power comes from. She can cut anything she has identified as something that can be cut since she was a child. Meaning cloth, hair, flesh etc. She can't cut cleanly stone, steel or wood or anything else like that. Her attacks might do some damage, but those attacks would do as much damage as the force behind the attack, it will not bypass it completely like it would do to cloth or hair. But defensive spells such as the one used in the series is another thing entirely. The defensive spell used is a mana construct that its entire purpose is to block completely mana based attacks such as her signature spell. She learned this to be the truth when she first learned the spell and grew with that concept as an absolute truth and reality. She never had any other influence about this, so she can't convince herself that her attacks can actually bypass this defense which is why Wirbel managed to defeat her. Her attacks were blocked and he is overall a better fighter with far more experience and talent likes she herself admitted.
As for Fern, while she is an impressive mage and will certainly grow even stronger with time and experience, she in not ready to face Frieren alone anytime soon. The episode cemented the fact that Fern could not face Frieren, she acted as an assassin the entire battle, waiting for the perfect opening in order to exploit it. The clone was focused on Frieren for the entire battle, and we were told in the episode by Frieren herself that some of the openings she created for Fern to exploit, Fern was not able to recognize and use, meaning that Fern is still lacking both in experience, skill and sheer strength. While she does have the potential to grow enough for her to defeat Frieren in the end, that is still many years down the road if it is even possible. In her current state, I would place her under Denken, Wirbel and Methode since I believe all three of them could win against her in a one on one battle. Denken because of his experience and knowledge. Wirbel because of his battle experience, versatility and his signature spell Sorganeil. Fern is a long range mage and does not know a lot about his magic, so it would be easy for him to place her in a position that he can see her whole body and trap her. And finally Methode is extremely versatile and has restrain magic that we were shown to be extremely effective against Fern, and it is implied in the episode that she defeated Fern's clone in a one on one battle already.

This single episode solos all of JJK (mid anime tbh)
This whole arc is just such a boring, shallow, generic slog compared to the absolute 10/10 of what comes before it. Too many characters, none of them all that great and certainly not well written. 4 or 5 episodes of this MIGHT have been okay, befoire getting back to Frieren, Fern and Stark and the actual STORY again, but this arc is just like a sidequest in an RPG that makes you leave your followers behind, takes twice as long as it needs to and gives you a shitty reward at the end.
Sigh. Thankfully Apothecary Diaries just gets better and better as it goes on.

Well much of this arc is the foundation for parts of the story later with the mage lore established and some of the characters introduced from this arc, so it's not just a side quest with no other purpose in the story.
Your comment makes it seem as if it was all action with no substance, but this arc had good character moments mixed in even for Frieren and Fern. There were still flashbacks for Frieren thinking of her old party as she enjoys the time in the present, which is the literal foundation of the whole series. There was a break in between the tests to have time with Frieren, Fern, and Stark like usual.
We got more with Flamme's character as it connects to Frieren and Serie. Serie is a character foil to Frieren as another elf to contrast Frieren's narrative with showing more appreciation for her time with her human companions now compared to Serie who isn't able to open up with her emotions for that.
There's more to the arc in a narrative sense than just saying it's shallow since it's not your preference to what came before.
