  • Parents of a sixth grade student at Harns Marsh Middle School, in Lehigh Acres, are outraged after a school counselor shaved their son's head at school after he showed up with an inappropriate hair cut. The school said the kid showed up to school with a gang related hair cut and it violated school policy. The hair cut represented the Miami Heat basketball team.

      The solution is not to take power away from teachers.
      It's to give them more power.
      I stand by what the school did as that haircut was completely inappropriate.
      The problem is not if the school had the authority to do that or not, the problem is the parents of that child sending him to school like that knowing the policy full well is against it.
      When you have situations of bullying that teachers aren't stopping, that's because they don't have the power to stop the bullying.
      Edit: the school should not have done that without the authority to do so, but my point is - they should have the authority to do so.

I was so pissed I didn't show up on the day they were supposed to take the photo. I so hate that school for this. There were so sports activities, no extracurricular activities, just study, study study and so so strict. The thing was, on of the teacher had long hair but that was okay because apparently, he is a TEACHER... and that hair style suits him. But us student? "What are you talking about kid? This is deja-vu to me. When I was in 7th grade the school actually sent out a letter about gang symbols/codes that were appearing on students' clothing _and certain hairstyles._ I remember seeing a kid being held at the office with a plain black cap on. Strict no hat policy, so I knew he had something they didn't like on his head. When I saw him a few days later, sure enough; shaved head.
    But that's the exact protocol. You give the kid a hat and request a parent pickup. Yard-narcs, janitors, P.E. teachers... plenty of hats to bum. If it's a short wait, keep em in the office. If it's not possible, then they get to wear a hat the rest of the day in class. Suspended until the hair is cut.

    • @gourdguru
      @gourdguru Год назад

      *"When I saw him a few days later, sure enough; shaved head."*
      what's Ironic is they shave your head for having a "Gang" hairstyle, without ever recognizing that the most common "Gang" hairstyle is a shaved head, whether we talk about racist skinhead gangs with the chromedome cut, latino or black gang members rocking the super short "Cesar" cut, etc.
      which of course means that THOSE kids who actually are affiliated with a gang go under the radar because their hair is "conservative enough" to not be noticed.
      like "you can't look like a Crip, so we're gonna make you look like a neonazi instead". kinda says all that needs to be said right there.
      whether intentional or not, the conservative attitude that schools hold about hair and dress codes biases toward targeting brown and black kids. notice how there is never a story about a white kid getting this treatment except MAYBE if there is Lice involved. instead it'll usually go down like you described "here's a hat, kid. don't come back until you got that Supercuts value special #2."

Creative minds are what high level jobs seek after. Would u be sending ur kid looking like that to school tho? Yeah they shoulda 100% talked to the parents first.. But this story doesnt make a lot of sense. From what I understood(i live in this school district), they told him to not come back to school with that hair and told the parents. He came back the next day and they cut his hair. Also, I have no clue where they are getting "gang affiliation from... Typical misinformation as usual from the news.
