I still love driving in the Philippines more than the US. In the US most drivers only look in the front, they are mostly unaware of their surroundings and that is why there is a lot of accidents here everyday.

I don’t think Sir, the side and the back we should be aware too because of the emergency vehicle responded to any emergency calls like the firetruck, ambulance, or the unmarked vehicles. Our country hasn’t been too observant or followed the traffic rules that much in some areas like the provinces. The city does with all these traffic law enforcers, street sign, marking on the lanes and the corners, visible traffic lights. We are kinda following the USA traffic pattern Sir, you may be seen something like this from the areas like the Barraggay has no traffic line on the middle of the lanes, no posted speed limit. I guess is another expenses from the taxpayer and let ourselves figured it out the safest speed limit on the residential and school zone area. We are struggling to minimized these driving habits due to lack of proper educational lesson, some can get their drivers license before they know how to drive…lagayan (Bribery). Well, hope you well aware if you’re driving there where you are Sir, just glance once in a while at your side and the back. Have a safe driving Sir.

I got pulled over there last year along Taft Avenue on a short visit for lane swerving and the 2 Manila traffic enforcers let me go after showing them my California license. They told me to be careful next time and smile and apologized for wasting my time. You're totally right, just enjoy your time there and have a lot of patience doing things. The government offices can have long crazy lines and people there don't get paid much so bringing down your expectation helps a lot. Try to meet more locals, you'll learn a lot from them.

Hahahaha Yes, filipino time is real. And, it's worse than Microsoft time. I would suggest learning the peak hours that gets MORE than crazy here. Not just in Manila, either. Anywhere in Metro Manila has peak times such as mornings approx 6-8:30 for school kids and workers, lunch times approx 11:45-2 and early evenings approx 5-7:30. These times are what I have observed anyway. Christmas times are even more crazy and it's traffic all day long, so like you said, relax and keep yourself amused because that road rage thing everyone has back in the states doesn't go real well here. If you find yourself stressed driving here, take a trike, jeepney, or bus and sit back to relax.

Hello Abram! Just found your vlog and watched your traffic video. Yes, I made the same experience some weeks ago when I was on vacation. Fortunately I didn't have to drive but my Filipina girlfriend. And during these weeks I learned *a lot*! The Filipinos are the most friendly and careful drivers I have ever seen! It's not their access to be somewhere as fast as possible at all costs but to reach their target safely and take care of the other people. Many Filipinos start their journey with a prayer before starting the engine. They thank God for everything he has done for them and the family so far and then ask for a safe travel. Of course also asking God to protect the car from malfunctioning or or breakdown. Then they start carefully. When moving into heavy traffic they use to operate the car's horn to ask the other drivers for extra care. That's so different compared to most of the other countries I've been as usually blowing the horn means "go away stupid it's my turn and my right!". An additional reason for driving carefully is of course also the state of many streets which is a result of lack of funds plus extreme weather conditions (lots of rain, mud, underminings, potholes,...). Nobody can afford to damage the car nor risk health. And that's good! Finally: try to spend some time in Manila. If you master this you'll master everything! :)

Merging into American highway is scarier because of the speed of the traffic, fatalities are more likely. Merging in the Philippine traffic is crazy but because of the traffic and slow pace, it's less likely that somebody dies. You have to feel the flow, look at the other diver or assertiveness of the other driver. Sometimes I'm in a hurry, I am more assertive, and get my way into traffic, sometimes, I feel more giving or feel the other party more assertive
    and give way.

yeah totally agree, driving in the Philippines really isn't that hard because you very rarely, if ever, go over 30mph(50km/h). In the US that's the speed you when you drive past homes.
On the highway in the US it's common to go 50-70mph(115km/h)
The people on motorbikes are the scariest thing for me still

As a foreigner I agree, it does help to have some one with you who knows the roads especially in metro Manila. Waze will often let you drive in circles or one way roads.
Just having your English license converted into a Filipino one isn't just as easy like that. I believe you need a valid visa of atleast 3 or 6 months right now? It used to be 1 year valid visa 5/6 years ago, making it almost impossible.
After driving here for some time you do get used to how 90% of the comote drivers drive. You will know exactly which pick up truck will try to sneak in or pass on the emergency lane to get a head start for example.

the drivers are not even using a signal light if they are changing lanes from the left or the right that is why they are always accidents most of them don't follow the rules they make their own rule. When they are on the streets they don't give way to others and even if someone is crossing in the pedestrian lane they don't even stop they don't even wait until the pedestrian has crossed to the other side of the street and they still keep driving no discipline at all not unlike in North America we give way to each other we follow the rules we let the pedestrian cross the street and Bus had a time schedule departing and arriving and stop at the bus stop. In the Philippines buses and jeepneys, they stop everywhere which gives traffic. I notice about the road they don't have enough traffic lights or traffic control as well

    Hello,
It's certainly an experience driving here (in the Philippines) for many reasons, and they're all not good!
My filipina wife and I live in Isabela province. Before that, we lived in Manila for 4 years. For me, you put your life at risk every time you drive. Having also lived in the UK, Istanbul, Dubai and now the Philippines. Sorry to say, but the Philippines wins hands down! My reasons are below (not limited too I may add!) -
    Very limited education regarding driving.
Local enforcers scam you. We were scammed twice in one day. The other was for almost 10K PHP! We were asked to put the money in same paper tissue!
For too many motorcycles in Manila. If they scratch your car trying to get passed, they just carry on regardless.
    Lack of lane discipline.
In the province, it's normal to have a family of 3/4 on a motorbike and no helmets!
    Lack of Police/LTO to patrol.
Very few rear lights on motorbikes. This is seriously dangerous. Especially when very few roads have street lighting.
    Poorly maintained vehicles/motorbikes.
Anyone can obtain a driving licence if you pay.
Little or no indicators when turning.
Motorbikes and cars just pull out or immediately stop without any care of who is behind.
    Undertaking is normal.
Foreigners get prosecuted if involved in an accident (even if it's not your fault)
Little or no motorbike or motor vehicle insurance.
I could go on, but you get my point.
    Cheers.
