Facts, just came across it. Chinese cooking demystified did a co comprehensive Lao Gan Ma types breakdown but this vid by Jaeson is the most comprehensive CROSS-brand test for chilli oil stuff
Thanks for this video. I'm a mixed-American (non-Asian) and once I made chilli oil from scratch after watching a few videos but wanted to try buying it since its a lot of work and will fragrant up my entire apartment for a good week when I do this. Since I don't use chilli oil daily or even weekly, I figured this time I'll buy something already made. I keep seeing all this hype for Fly By Jing, so I figured I'd give it a try. There's an H-Mart literally down the street in Cedar Park, TX (Austin, TX area) so of course I'm always excited to go and stock up on all my Asian condiments and ingredients - they last me a good year + I have to watch myself with cooking Asian food because I can easily get ADDICTED - all forms of Asian food and if I start eating it daily I don't think I can eat anything else! SO MUCH flavor in Asian food - YUM!
After this video, we have gone to LaoGanMa almost exclusively. It's subtle enough to not change the food too much. If you want something spicy, I would get a bottle from @chilicrispsforspicylips. They produce fresh and crispy hot oil. Super spicy, but very fragrant and delicious! Thanks for the comment! I love Austin. I know many Texans don't!
Trader Joe's even has a version now, called "Crunchy Chili Onion." It's good, very salty-sweet, smokey-heat, GARLIC, and crunchy- crunchy, so it enhances your texture experience. I'd say it's been adapted to Westernized palates and food choices, so those who dislike Chinese 5 spice or the typical star anise, clove, Szechuan peppercorns etc. which usually go in chili oils will enjoy it a lot. The garlic/ paprika/ smokiness makes it suitable for adding a bit of heat and texture to things like BBQ or deli sandwiches, over things like noodles or dumplings. I don't remember how much it cost, (I think it was in the $4 range for a jar about the size of the momofoku one,) or how long they'll have it, because it's Trader Joe's and they retire stuff constantly.
Thank you! I really like the S&B, and I've tried a few others that were kinda meh, so it was nice to get a review of some more and see what I might want to try out!
Yeah! I have so many now that are meh, but I'm hoping that you won't have to do the same thing! Check out @chilicrisps4spicylips on Instagram. Her oils are super spicy yet flavorful!
I'm in that phase in my life where my procrastination has led me to search for the perfect chili oil before making my own. Planning to buy the laoganma first for a baseline.
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan just bought and tasted it. Its crunchy as you said, and its not that spicy as I thought. It lacks a bit more spice for me, but its a unique flavor compared to the local and home-made chili oils I've tried. I tried the chicken black bean kind.
Have heard that Bing is pretty good, not reviewed here. Made in the USA. Heard MANY complaints about the Fly by Jing having a very poor container that leaks badly.
@@warrenlauzon5315 the fly by Jing does have a leaky jar. Luckily it didn't leak in shipping. Haven't tried Bing. I like Boon and @chilicrisp4spicylips (Instagram) has a nice super spicy crisp. Packed with crispy fried garlic and peppers!
Thanks for the review! I often buy the momofuku, and like the fly by jing. I want to start making my own chili crunch, and I like the sweetness of the momfuku (I feel like it makes it a little more versatile for different cuisines), but like the heat of sichuan peppercorns. So hearing your thoughts on different store bought versions is helping me decide on how I want to go about preparing some of the ingredients and which ones I want to incorporate together for my own personalized version.
Just found you on here, and very great review thanks. I have tried a couple of those but not Fly By Jing. I am encouraged to try it now. Thanks so much for sharing.

@@barbarjinx3802 sounds like a good visit to Hmart's pepper aisle? I wonder if Mexican black beans and/or coriander seeds/cilantro/cumin would make it taste "authentic" or compatible to a Mexican palate.
Just watched this last night after my fly by jing arrived. I wanted to see how it stacked up against Lao Gan ma and S&B. I too think it's really good. I tried it on a simple bibimbap and almost couldn't stop adding more as I ate.
I have all these except the chef Troys but H mart is about an hr away and will check it out just because i literally got like a collection of 15 diff chili oils and am curious. To me the S&B is frickn amazing but its hardly a normal chili oil like the others. Its more a garlic condiment with some chili oil essence. I mix it with the fly by jing or momofuku one with and sometinrs the trader joes chili onion crunch. I love chili oils and have different varities like mexican matchas or a variety of diff Asian chili oils. Out of all these S&B has the most bold taste but the fly by jing is way more umami and has some of the widest variety of taste but not as bold as that S&B. I can find others like the fly by jing but i am yet to find another chili oil like the S&B one. Why i prize that one as its more unique, but thats just an opinion. Where im at in the bay area the S&B is contantly sold out and they fill our shelfs with like 50 bottles. The momofuku one dont move in those numbers so obviously others agree. I dont think ive seen another oil even sold out in the last two years but that one constantly being bought. Its not cheap either i pay almost $12 a bottle for tgat stuff n go through at least one a week. Love my chili oils lol. Cool comparison vid though.
the only one i can find locally in store is the s&b and its good, but i think im gonna try and get the fly by jing. I'll have to go to the next city over to get to an asian market to look around too. thanks!!!
Your video made me start my own quest. I bought all brands you show in the video. S&B is definitely my favorite! Fly has a wonderful flavor but I wish it had more crunch. Lol.
That's amazing! Try @chilicrisps4spicylips! Check her out on Instagram and dm her for an order. It's really spicy but has a great crunch and great flavor! My current favorite.
I’m biased cause I grew up on it but Lao gan ma has to be my favorite it has less of a peppercorn taste which I prefer cause I’m not from Sichuan but that msg just makes it so addicting.
My favorite Sichuan peppercorn-chili crisp oil is AGV Spicy Chili Sauce/Sichuan Mala Jiang from Taiwan. They have a small and big jar and you can find it at any Chinese grocery. It had dense crispy chili flakes, lots of umami, and heavy Sichuan peppercorn flavor. It's not very hot but it's definitely a few notches hotter than Lao Gan Ma.
I. So addicted to laoganna I ate half jar by itself again last night. I did order Fly by Jing it's good but I love Laoganna more. I have 2 more coming in mail. I can't wait. Thanks my stomach. :))))
I'm glad! It's fun trying new stuff. If you want really spicy, you follow @chilicrisps4spicylips on Instagram. DM her and order. So so good, but really hot.
I just got some Fly by Jing and I love it. I was hoping I was going to see that one of the cheaper options was more flavorful and worth trying, but it sounds like maybe I will be disappointed!
I’m glad I watched this…I wanted to know how Fly By Jing tasted..With the name “chili crisp” I assumed it wouldn’t have the fermented soybeans in it..That just means it will be used in different dishes...I definitely keep some msg and chicken powder handy to add a little pop to lots of dishes..Thank you for the video.
@@rehelms I have! It's great! If you want to try something spicy, you should follow @chilicrisps4spicylips on Instagram and dm her for a sauce! It's very spicy and crispy. It's what I think a chili crisp should be, but I found it needed salt and sugar. Maybe she changed it a little, but that stuff is awesome.
Hi! Thanks for the nice video. I have never tried any chili crisp except mine. I am sorry to say that I can't eat spicy food... I do try to build my heat tolerance but it is hard to find specific low heat chili varieties in Greece. So, I have made my own chili crisp with dehydrated amarillo peppers (somehow these peppers are really mild), a little bit of chili powder, some chili flakes, garlic onion, ginger etc. I know it sounds lame but unfortunately I can't stand the heat. So, my question is: Does any of the products that you've tasted are for the low heat tolerance people like me? Should I try any of these?
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan Thanks for this recommendation! I've always been a lover of super spicy foods, but now that I'm over 50, for some reason I find myself more sensitive and unable to enjoy spiciness like I used to.
Just bought the traditional one by accident thinking it was hot chili oil and my mouth is sooooo happy. Yall Asians holdin out on me this shit is bomb.
I am indianilike very spicy there is a very famous Chinese restaurant near our house call summing they have spicy foods like their chili oil . So thinking that I bought the one you showed the staple in chines house , the first bottle you showed .i bought few yrs back it is no where near to what I had in restaurant it’s so good but this bottle one was bad it’s oil was very bad tasting so I always purchase xtra chili oil but they don’t sell in bottles they just sell xtra if we want more
Thanks for the comparison! It's the kind of thing I like to do with the kids (peanut butter taste test, soy sauce test, whatever). I've only bought Laogama with the fermented black beans, but not this version. I didn't know chili crisp was thing now. Also, didn't know Japan was in the market as well since they aren't known for being chili consumers. Glad to know you can find some of these at H-Mart - my main grocer (in Texas).
I tried the fly by jing flavor and I didnt like the funky sludge in it. I dont think they drain the black beans. I figured out how to make the lao gan ma at home. You have to soak the beans and rinse them and then everything gets cooked separately before being combined in the flavored oil.
Good for you for debunking the MSG myth. It just won't seem to go away even through it was disproven, as I recall, in the late 70s. I might just stick with the Lao Gan Ma. Not entirely sure I would want a chili crisp that wasn't from Guizhou or Hunan. I just don't know if Japan is the place to source your chili crisp from! Perhaps I'm being unfair. As for the "Sichuan" chili crisp "Fly By Jing" ... My understanding is that Sichuan is the province for chili oil, whereas Guizhou is the home of chili crisp. Is this one of those distortions that happen when Asian foods end up being imitated abroad? On that note, I'm fairly sure I saw a very strange approach to kimchi in a store once too. P.S. Yeah, H-Mart is the best.

It's fairly balanced! After having some of the others, like Momofuku's, I think FBJ is ok. If you use a large quantity for soup, let's say, it doesn't make things too salty.
Out of these? None of them are too spicy. Look up @chilicrisps4spicylips on instagram. They make it spicy but really flavorful. Order through their link on insta.

Not at all “Hot!”..But adds such a Good Garlicky, Sweet, Flavor to Rice, Sardines on crackers, etc..and has that added little Crunch from the Almonds…Very Nice!😋 I think I may try to make my own “homemade” version in the future, because the S&B Brand’s jar is sooo small & I only go to the Asian grocery 1xmth..😂and I really like this stuff so I can see me eating it or using it in cooking, about as regularly as I do kimchi! 😉👍🏻… Thanks for turning me (& Everyone Else) on to these tasty condiments! I ordered a bottle of laoganma off Amazon during the pandemic and it arrived in a way-too-big box wrapped in a single layer of thin bubble wrap. Just watched this last night after my fly by jing arrived. I wanted to see how it stacked up against Lao Gan ma and S&B. I too think it's really good. I tried it on a simple bibimbap and almost couldn't stop adding more as I ate.
Is fly by jing spicier than Laoganma? I have a jar of laonganma, but it is not spicy.
Omg thanks for the video 😊awesome review 👏
Nice review looks like I have some new crisps to try
Try a few! I really do recommend going for Chef Troy and Fly by Jing.
the only one i can find locally in store is the s&b and its good, but i think im gonna try and get the fly by jing. I'll have to go to the next city over to get to an asian market to look around too. thanks!!!
Good luck! I got the Fly by Jing online because I couldn't find it in stores. Happy hunting!
Im new to chili oils, bought 730g laoganma for 8€ from the local chinese shop and it seems like a very good deal now that ive watched these reviews
Cool review
I’m biased cause I grew up on it but Lao gan ma has to be my favorite it has less of a peppercorn taste which I prefer cause I’m not from Sichuan but that msg just makes it so addicting.
I was looking for an affiliate link in the description. Bought it.
Ah. No affiliate links. Just for fun!
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan thanks for the video 👊🏽
Thank you, appreciate it!!
I'll keep an eye out! Thanks for the rec! So many to choose from.
Bless your soul bro whatever you are, thank you for this review, FBJ is hands down the best chilli oil ever
Awesome video man thanks for the info!
Thanks! Keep trying new things!
I'd like to see you do some gochujang reviews!
Interesting. All store bought stuff all kinda tastes the same. It's all about how you use it. Homemade stuff tho....
Ok! I'm going to buy the Fly By Jing & try it!
Maybe a small one! It's pretty dominating.
Awesome video. Subbed
Hot Crispy Oil is the best. Do you have a review on that?
Never heard. I'll look into it!
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan nice! It's my favorite.
Its 1:16am right now, and i have never craved white rice with chili sauce this much, in my life 😣
do it to it.
Try the lao gan ma, it's the og for a reason, fly by jing is good but only pricey because it is a hipster thing.
Thanks For The Video!!
I'm glad to help! Fly by Jing is tasty, but dominant.
I wonder if people that use the seasoning Accent is msg?
The fly By Jing Chili Crisp is sold at target stores! It's very delicious!
You're doing gods work
Thanks, Adam.
Great review! I love Lao Gan Ma. Just ordered the Fly by Jing big boi. It's 10 percent off right now and free shipping.
It's different for sure! Open mind!
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan have you tried Boon sauce? It's next level.
Yes! Try the Chef Troy. It's not too spicy. Good crunch and adds a lot of flavor!
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan Thanks for this recommendation! I've always been a lover of super spicy foods, but now that I'm over 50, for some reason I find myself more sensitive and unable to enjoy spiciness like I used to.
@@byeongcheol5610 I'm glad to have helped, hyung. Enjoy!
So thinking that I bought the one you showed the staple in chines house , the first bottle you showed .i bought few yrs back it is no where near to what I had in restaurant it’s so good but this bottle one was bad it’s oil was very bad tasting so I always purchase xtra chili oil but they don’t sell in bottles they just sell xtra if we want more
@@ss-ib8gm homemade is always better!!
@@ss-ib8gm you should check out @chilicrisps4spicylips on Instagram. Homemade, verrrrry spicy, great flavor!
Yeah. The Japanese ones aren't that spicy. Subtle! Keep trying fun stuff!
I tried the fly by jing flavor and I didnt like the funky sludge in it. I dont think they drain the black beans. I figured out how to make the lao gan ma at home. You have to soak the beans and rinse them and then everything gets cooked separately before being combined in the flavored oil.
You should try Boon Sauce chili oil
👍👍👍👍👍
We loved the momofuku one... will have to try fly by Jing 🤤
Please do!
David Chang is a D-bag
Ah! That would explain why this is more oil than crisp!
Soooo glad u made this 💯💯💯
You're welcome, @creepyguy!
I can hear the crunch with the momofuka
I can tell which one you like the best by the amount you used.
Huh! Which one was that?
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan the one you got for Christmas or a gift and the one you put the most of on the rice.
S&B is my FAVE!!!
Jaeson, have you tried Boon? It's amazing!
Boon? What's that?
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan next level chili oil. It was featured on Worth It. Once I tried it, I immediately bought a second jar and also got one for my friend.
@@Arrive2Defy ok. I'm down.
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan I've also been trying to add to my hot oil collection so your video is definitely going to help me branch out and try some of the more rare brands. I would be curious to see how Boon stacks up to your collection. So far, it's been #1 for me.
@@Arrive2Defy I ordered it! Shipping is a little high, but whatevs. If it's worth it, nbd.
I got the Fly by Jing! I love it, has just the right amount of black pepper but could use more salt.
It's fairly balanced! After having some of the others, like Momofuku's, I think FBJ is ok. If you use a large quantity for soup, let's say, it doesn't make things too salty.
Which one has the most heat? I’m looking for a spicy one
Out of these? None of them are too spicy. Look up @chilicrisps4spicylips on instagram. They make it spicy but really flavorful. Order through their link on insta.
Have you ever made your own?
I haven't yet. I think I have some ideas, but it wouldn't be using the peppercorns. I think I would stick with crispy fried peppers and crispy garlic. Have you made any, Alexandra?
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan I haven’t, but I plan to sometime in the future once I restock a few things from my local spice shop. I really liked your video. Take care.
Thank you doing tgis ao i didnt have to. 😊
Thank you so much for this review. I bought S&B and loved it and wanted to try another brand. Fly By Jing is now sold on Amazon but I was on the fence because of some negative reviews. Your review convinced me to try it. Some reviewers said Lao Gan Ma tastes very fishy. Was that your impression as well?
I never thought it was fishy, but some others have called it that. I has a rich oily flavor that some might equate to oily fish like Mackerel.
Thank you for clarifying all of the condiments you showed! I haven’t tried any of them (I have a whimpy Pallet that can’t stand ‘hot’) as I tend to stay away from “Hot”+”Spicy” in the World of Asian Flavors, because Us Asians Don’t play😂👍🏻When they say “Spicy” or “Hot” they mean it!😂
But, Your review gives me hope that I can try some of those condiments, we’ll see..*smiles*…I see them used and spoke of often when watching cooking videos😁👍🏻
Try! Spice up your life!
@@JaesonHanNotJasonHan Picked up the S&B “Crunchy Garlic with Chili Oil”, because that was the only one I could find (found a few other brands but none You covered or I had seen covered in other videos)…And, shocking as it is…NO…”Lao Gan Ma” brand in my local Asian Mrkt🤷🏻♀️+The lady there was not helpful so…S&B it was😂..
and SO GLAD I did‼️
I ❤ it‼️ So, Yummy! Not at all “Hot!”..But adds such a Good Garlicky, Sweet, Flavor to Rice, Sardines on crackers, etc..and has that added little Crunch from the Almonds…Very Nice!😋
I think I may try to make my own “homemade” version in the future, because the S&B Brand’s jar is sooo small & I only go to the Asian grocery 1xmth..😂and I really like this stuff so I can see me eating it or using it in cooking, about as regularly as I do kimchi!
😉👍🏻…
Thanks for turning me (& Everyone Else) on to these tasty condiments!
I’m definitely going to get my hands on some of the “Fly by Jing” and others to try them out now, too! 😁👍🏻
Have a Great Week and May You only have both positive and prosperous experiences!😁👍🏻
@@bonniebuchanan985 that's great! The S&B is very neutral. You might find the other brands a little too strong. Let me know if you make your own!
I ordered a bottle of laoganma off Amazon during the pandemic and it arrived in a way-too-big box wrapped in a single layer of thin bubble wrap. The bottle was cracked down the side and it was leaking everywhere to the point where the box it came in had those deep pizza box style grease spots. Tossed it, obviously, but this vid fired me up to want to order again. Fingers crossed 🤞
Hopefully you like it. It has a strong flavor and it overpowers a lot. Great if you like it. I've recently tried Boon from LA and it gets two thumbs up! Check out your local Adian supermarket if you can. LGM is everywhere.
You know you can just pick it up at a Walmart right?
