This stuff is so precious. There's no way of authentically recreating the era that made these things so iconic, so to find any morsels of art from the era is so exciting! And the fact it's still happening with games 30 years later is so cool.
Ed Boon has stated a few times that the arcade versions of Mortal Kombat are hiding many secrets that have yet to be discovered. Makes you wonder what is hidden in MK4.
hold up. Ermaccer was involved? I've seen what that dude has done with the 3D era games, Ermaccer is the future of MK
MKll still making history 🤟
Very interesting stuff! I would imagine the prototype name "Siren" would refer to Sindel, but this is Mortal Kombat 2... could it be they might've had plans to introduce her in that game, but didn't quite have enough time?
thats just what i was thinking!
I can see why Midway's head honchos stepped in; the pixelated head wound does seem a bit too reminiscent of real life fatal wounds, like what a 12 gauge shotgun wound to a human head could do. Even with the head decapitations, it's still simplistic enough- not enough detail.
It is ironic how bent out of shape politicians got back then over something now so primitive, imagine if you went back in time and showed Joe Lieberman or Tipper Gore MK’s fatalities today
This is fantastic. The brain bash thing would have been unreal to see back then in arcades haha. I hope it gets added to MK2Plus.
Pretty cool about Cages fatality, they used the idea for his deadly alliance fatality.
I wonder if those hanging corpse sprites were meant to be used for the living forest stage. Several other MK games have corpses in the background of that stage.
I want a NEW Mortal Kombat game that goes back to the roots of using sprite animation.
Then you could fit every MK character into sprite form, Ike an MK Armageddon, wouldn’t take up a lot of space.
It’s cool seeing the 2D characters in 3D
But it’d make the new 3D characters feel more authentic, to see the 3D characters in 2D.
You could ramp the shit out of Fatalities now cause people don’t care like they did in 93
We were going to get a remade MK2 but Netherrealm were not happy with the results so they canned it. From the pictures I saw I think they were being too fussy. It looked great.
I Remember seeing images of Barakka performing a swirl attack (a spin) with both arm blades extended in promotional images.
(Obviously not in game)
They put it in MK Trilogy though.
oh man i remember red baron as a kid. my uncle would take me to rally’s down the street and then to red baron
Still patiently looking for that Kano Transformation trick. Something tells me that Ed Boon had been trolling…
He is. He put stuff like "Shawn Attacks" and "Kano Transformations" in the arcade audits to keep us looking for shit that doesn't exist. Arcade MK2 was an incomplete game to the point where Probe and Sculptured Software had to include things in the Genesis and SNES ports that Midway neglected to add in the arcade. Shang Tsung's Stage/Pit Fatality for example of D, D, U, D was never programmed in the Arcade ROM and there was a random bug where his Up The Nose fatality would trigger the Kintaro Fatality instead.
I remember being so disappointed with MK4 because they went polygon 3D and it looked cartoony. I liked the MK1-3 looking like pictures turned into sprites and wanted 3D MK to have that realistic look. Even the most modern MK doesn't recapture that "real picture" look.
I think MK3 was already a step in the wrong direction in every aspect, MK2 had a perfect aesthetic, it looked cartoony but could also be taken seriously, and 3 made it look like Batman Forever
The new games are garbage, there's no sense for aesthetics at all. I think the ps2 games were obviously very flawed even graphically, but at least the characters were endearing with their cartoony look. The new games are just generic and if MK9 had the common sense of taking inspiration from MK2, the new one for example is trying as hard as possible to make everything about the MK world and franchise generic and forgettable.
I also think that the level of violence of the new games makes no sense at all and it's becoming something sadistic and por nographic, I mean in MK1 and 2 Fatalities were violent but felt like executions. Now it's basically cutscenes of characters doing the most over the top sadistic things for the pleasure of the viewer and I don't see how that level of violence is pleasant or cool.
The fatalities in MK2 are over the top compared to real life but you can take them seriously in the context of the game, in the new games they just don't make any sense at all and the fact that they try to make them even more realistic makes them more incoherent
One of the few times my dad, who had precisely 0 interest in video games, ever commented on my games was when I was playing MK4 on N64. He looked up at it and just said, "That's the new one? The older one looked better." I had to agree.
@@kochiyama The truth is MK2 still looks better than the last MK games lmao
@@LarryHazard Yeah I consider MK9 the best one for that reason. It took my favorite qualities from the original trilogy but gave a well-needed facelift in terms of graphics and gameplay. X and 11 have impressively realistic graphics... but the character designs are so drab and devoid of much color. Not to mention when they try to replicate the MK style of humor, it just feels so forced (Cassie Cage being a prime example of what I mean). They play well, and there is fun to be had with friends, but they just feel uninspired compared to MK9.
@@LarryHazard The new games have good graphics and art direction but bad story modes.
The Mugen folks will make great use out of the new animation frames , , , yes indeed 😎👍
Be cool to see these implemented into an Ultimate MK 2 mugen
One of the characters who appeared in MKII due to a glitch is Skarlet.
the hanging sprites are very dope
All those spites been used in best version of MK2 going on right now - mugen "Mortal Kombat II Remix"
ketchup & mustard
This is really cool man. Thanks for sharing. I am a huge MK fan.
I would call this Gaming Archeology
Omg that Johnny Cage fatality! 🤯
A. Few times a year all the characters at galloping ghost arcade in Brookfield Illinois.
It will be interesting to see mugen creators put these animations into the games
wonder if the mortal kombat mugen community has put all this to new use already lol they work pretty fast to out do eachother i swear lol
Great Video! So cool to see the recreated Fatality from the frames. Some of the images like Shang Tsung's elongated punch didn't look great and I bet some of these where just last minute quality cuts (if not all of them).
This is pretty cool, especially the fact Cage had a Fatality that they deemed too violent to keep in the game. It makes sense, pretty much every fatality was kept to a pretty non-graphic decapitation, bisection or explosion, the only big exception coming to mind being Kung Lao's fatality where he cuts the opponent in half but down the middle instead of across the waist and you see all the ribs popping out. I always thought that was the most brutal finisher in the game!
Roger Sharp thought it was too violent but when you consider Jax had a head squash fatality, Ed and John might have thought the Cage brain rip was redundant or even janky looking since Daniel Pesina is shown kinda breaking the 4th wall in that last frame of animation for it. You can see him clearly laughing and looking at Ed Boon off camera as he threw the brains on the ground.
I bet mugen creators are over the moon with this watch them put these sprites back into mugen
The amazing thing is a lot of this we could end up seeing in Mugen games and arcade ROM hacks
I still swear that my buddy and I figured out a way to play as Noob Saibot in MK2 on Genesis.
I hope we get a legit PC port like with SM64 now that the source is out.
An arcade perfect port for PC would still be wonky because the arcade runs at 53ish FPS, only a handful of consumer CRTs can display the content correctly
i assume edward meant baraka as in edward scissorhands. They really should of kept the brain rip fatality, the tearing off the torso one was a bit goofy imo.
Nice overview, a fascinating find!
Anyone ever heard, or seen Liu Kang turning into a three headed, or white dragon?
Man I remember the secrets form K200, was above and beyond on what is real and imagination. I didn’t think this would expand to this and if on,y my 12 year old self when playing mk2 knows, mind blowing
Awesome knowing the MK+ series is becoming popular.
Cool fact the brain bash fatality is in mk2 remix
I feel like the sprites aren't new since these where datamined years and years ago
They really need to give Johnny that brain bash fatality in the upcoming MK1 title
Edit: Shao Kahn too. That giant fist would be funny. That reptile air spit animation is nice.
Anyone ever seen a baby get uppercuted off the screen?
Will fit good in a Ultimate MK 2... mugen or ikemen go
I was recommended this on YT great stuff fun to watch
Towards x2 down high punch and block
I did a pretty fun stream on this (a shout-out for ME as far as team plus goes would be nice 😊 I did umk3+, but did a stream and some Twitter threads on MK2 source code leaks - it's my most viewed tweets and most viewed streams lol)
Some of the extra up close punch animations were likely intended to be used similar to kitana's fan and Baraka's blade swipes.
Found a really cool unused shao kahn/ portal background story board piece as well.
I watched some of your streams on this a while back... I love the MK+ projects! Still looking forward to the first public Mortal Kombat + release! Are these MK2 leaks going to eventually find themselves into a future MK2+ version? Or is MK2+ considered complete?
Man I love this video , just know your awesome man.. thanks
Nice!! Any chance of compiling an arcade perfect port to Windows?
The source code revealed that the game was programed to read your joystick movement and counter. Last thing anyone wants are "arcade perfect" ports of these cheating ass bastards ...
Not with the original frame rate of 53, only a small handful of consumer level CRTs can handle this properly
MK1 releases in October
So, still no nudalities...
Just use your imagination. Especially with Mileena. 😆
@@TogonzoMedia Because apparently the fanbase can't get enough of her for whatever reason. 🤣 I'll uh...um uh... stick to Kitana as my Waifu. Thank you.
Brain rip would have been brutal for a 90s game and I wish it was used
good work buddy
MK2 was the freaking best!
I always wondered two things. One, how did you guys go from making these animations feel so intuitive, smooth and satisfying to the 3D animations that felt off and loose. The models look so awkward. It was near perfection for that time by UMK3 and Trilogy, just to take ten steps back on the first 3D iteration and secondly WHY DON'T THEY USE DIGITIZED CHARACTERS for the 3D games???? You would think with the new consoles being able to render realistic stuff it would have been so surreal to see full 3D motion captured characters.
MK1 looks like the only 3D installment where the animations look tight and fluid again so I'm pretty excited for that.
Motion capture was done for every MK game. The problem was mainly Midway. They didn't pour enough money and development time into MK. When Midway went bankrupt, Warner Bros bought all the Midway IP and development studios in a firesale. They shuttered Midway West/Atari Games, and poured enough money in the Chicago studio (Netherrealm) that they could buy the Unreal Engine and customize it to their goals. That took time and they aced it mk11 ...
@@TogonzoMedia I didn't mean to say motion capture I meant digitized. I heard from a few people it was a money thing but I mean, there's been so many of them including spin offs, why not just wait a few years more and focus on one title? I know I'm not the only person that dreams of having digitized characters as 3D models.
@@ncnuggets My guess would be time. The first trilogy of games required digitizing and animating each frame of animation by hand. With 3D MoCap, all of that can be captured and imported into their development environment. They can then tweak the animation by hand and put a realistic skin on the model. What I wish they would do is remaster the classic MK games in 4K ...
@@TogonzoMediabut you are still going to run into the FPS never matching the correct speed of the original arcade, 53ish FPS
nice video
Mugen can do it
MK 2 remix is the best out check it out
The MK2 blood and gore was really, really disappointing. Midway started their obsession with "dry" fatalities; bones, ribcages, cartilage, and cardboard skin chunks bouncing and exploding everywhere. Look awful, even at the time. And it only got worse in MK3.
Granted, some of the fatalities were quite gory (Kung Lao's split and Jax's arm rip), and even some of the less gory and bloody ones like Liu Kang's Dragon and Reptile's head lick were great, but the blood and gore was terribly done. The blood effects were genuinely more accomplished in MK1.
Blood Warrior did a great job of blood and gore effects on Fatalities. True, the fatalities weren't as creative as MK, but they looked nasty and substantial.
MK2 had a creepy, dark, and sinister atmosphere. It's just a shame that the more you played it, and the more you discovered, the more goofy and dumb it became.
"I wonder if that tree can eat people? No, it can't... but I can turn my enemy into a baby and dance under a disco ball." 😂
MK comes off as more violent because hardware limitations forced Ed and John into a "less is more" approach, resulting in more realistic violence. A few blood splatters here and there, a brief blood geyser from decapitations, etc. The only think ridiculous and tongue in cheek in MK1 were the special moves and uppercuts that can launch 200lb humans 12 feet in the air. MK2 is where the violence started to veer into over the top absurdity - blood geysers that round themselves into balls in mid air before gravity pulls them down, 3 intestines, 5 ribcages, 4 femurs, etc. Cage's triple head fatality says it all. 😂
I'll point out hearing that Babalities and Friendships were, in fact, snide jabs at the media decrying the game's violence just for sensationalism and headlines.
1:57.. like blizzards in Primal Rage
4:01.. why did they not just leave that in there as well as Johnny cages scrapped one...
