    This stuff is so precious. There's no way of authentically recreating the era that made these things so iconic, so to find any morsels of art from the era is so exciting! And the fact it's still happening with games 30 years later is so cool.

    I can see why Midway's head honchos stepped in; the pixelated head wound does seem a bit too reminiscent of real life fatal wounds, like what a 12 gauge shotgun wound to a human head could do. Even with the head decapitations, it's still simplistic enough- not enough detail.

    I want a NEW Mortal Kombat game that goes back to the roots of using sprite animation.
    Then you could fit every MK character into sprite form, Ike an MK Armageddon, wouldn’t take up a lot of space.
    It’s cool seeing the 2D characters in 3D
    But it’d make the new 3D characters feel more authentic, to see the 3D characters in 2D.
    You could ramp the shit out of Fatalities now cause people don’t care like they did in 93

      @TogonzoMedia  Год назад +1

      He is. He put stuff like "Shawn Attacks" and "Kano Transformations" in the arcade audits to keep us looking for shit that doesn't exist. Arcade MK2 was an incomplete game to the point where Probe and Sculptured Software had to include things in the Genesis and SNES ports that Midway neglected to add in the arcade. Shang Tsung's Stage/Pit Fatality for example of D, D, U, D was never programmed in the Arcade ROM and there was a random bug where his Up The Nose fatality would trigger the Kintaro Fatality instead.

    I remember being so disappointed with MK4 because they went polygon 3D and it looked cartoony. I liked the MK1-3 looking like pictures turned into sprites and wanted 3D MK to have that realistic look. Even the most modern MK doesn't recapture that "real picture" look.

    • @LarryHazard
      @LarryHazard Год назад +5

      I think MK3 was already a step in the wrong direction in every aspect, MK2 had a perfect aesthetic, it looked cartoony but could also be taken seriously, and 3 made it look like Batman Forever
      The new games are garbage, there's no sense for aesthetics at all. I think the ps2 games were obviously very flawed even graphically, but at least the characters were endearing with their cartoony look. The new games are just generic and if MK9 had the common sense of taking inspiration from MK2, the new one for example is trying as hard as possible to make everything about the MK world and franchise generic and forgettable.
      I also think that the level of violence of the new games makes no sense at all and it's becoming something sadistic and por nographic, I mean in MK1 and 2 Fatalities were violent but felt like executions. Now it's basically cutscenes of characters doing the most over the top sadistic things for the pleasure of the viewer and I don't see how that level of violence is pleasant or cool.
      The fatalities in MK2 are over the top compared to real life but you can take them seriously in the context of the game, in the new games they just don't make any sense at all and the fact that they try to make them even more realistic makes them more incoherent

      @@LarryHazard Yeah I consider MK9 the best one for that reason. It took my favorite qualities from the original trilogy but gave a well-needed facelift in terms of graphics and gameplay. X and 11 have impressively realistic graphics... but the character designs are so drab and devoid of much color. Not to mention when they try to replicate the MK style of humor, it just feels so forced (Cassie Cage being a prime example of what I mean). They play well, and there is fun to be had with friends, but they just feel uninspired compared to MK9.

    This is pretty cool, especially the fact Cage had a Fatality that they deemed too violent to keep in the game. It makes sense, pretty much every fatality was kept to a pretty non-graphic decapitation, bisection or explosion, the only big exception coming to mind being Kung Lao's fatality where he cuts the opponent in half but down the middle instead of across the waist and you see all the ribs popping out. I always thought that was the most brutal finisher in the game!

    • @TogonzoMedia
      @TogonzoMedia  5 месяцев назад

      Roger Sharp thought it was too violent but when you consider Jax had a head squash fatality, Ed and John might have thought the Cage brain rip was redundant or even janky looking since Daniel Pesina is shown kinda breaking the 4th wall in that last frame of animation for it. You can see him clearly laughing and looking at Ed Boon off camera as he threw the brains on the ground.

    I always wondered two things. One, how did you guys go from making these animations feel so intuitive, smooth and satisfying to the 3D animations that felt off and loose. The models look so awkward. It was near perfection for that time by UMK3 and Trilogy, just to take ten steps back on the first 3D iteration and secondly WHY DON'T THEY USE DIGITIZED CHARACTERS for the 3D games???? You would think with the new consoles being able to render realistic stuff it would have been so surreal to see full 3D motion captured characters.
    MK1 looks like the only 3D installment where the animations look tight and fluid again so I'm pretty excited for that.

    • @TogonzoMedia
      @TogonzoMedia  Год назад

      Motion capture was done for every MK game. The problem was mainly Midway. They didn't pour enough money and development time into MK. When Midway went bankrupt, Warner Bros bought all the Midway IP and development studios in a firesale. They shuttered Midway West/Atari Games, and poured enough money in the Chicago studio (Netherrealm) that they could buy the Unreal Engine and customize it to their goals. That took time and they aced it mk11 ...

    • @ncnuggets
      @ncnuggets Год назад +2

      @@TogonzoMedia I didn't mean to say motion capture I meant digitized. I heard from a few people it was a money thing but I mean, there's been so many of them including spin offs, why not just wait a few years more and focus on one title? I know I'm not the only person that dreams of having digitized characters as 3D models.

    • @TogonzoMedia
      @TogonzoMedia  Год назад +2

      @@ncnuggets My guess would be time. The first trilogy of games required digitizing and animating each frame of animation by hand. With 3D MoCap, all of that can be captured and imported into their development environment. They can then tweak the animation by hand and put a realistic skin on the model. What I wish they would do is remaster the classic MK games in 4K ...

    The MK2 blood and gore was really, really disappointing. Midway started their obsession with "dry" fatalities; bones, ribcages, cartilage, and cardboard skin chunks bouncing and exploding everywhere. Look awful, even at the time. And it only got worse in MK3.
    Granted, some of the fatalities were quite gory (Kung Lao's split and Jax's arm rip), and even some of the less gory and bloody ones like Liu Kang's Dragon and Reptile's head lick were great, but the blood and gore was terribly done. The blood effects were genuinely more accomplished in MK1.
    Blood Warrior did a great job of blood and gore effects on Fatalities. True, the fatalities weren't as creative as MK, but they looked nasty and substantial.
    MK2 had a creepy, dark, and sinister atmosphere. It's just a shame that the more you played it, and the more you discovered, the more goofy and dumb it became.
    "I wonder if that tree can eat people? No, it can't... but I can turn my enemy into a baby and dance under a disco ball." 😂

    • @TogonzoMedia
      @TogonzoMedia  Год назад +8

      MK comes off as more violent because hardware limitations forced Ed and John into a "less is more" approach, resulting in more realistic violence. A few blood splatters here and there, a brief blood geyser from decapitations, etc. The only think ridiculous and tongue in cheek in MK1 were the special moves and uppercuts that can launch 200lb humans 12 feet in the air. MK2 is where the violence started to veer into over the top absurdity - blood geysers that round themselves into balls in mid air before gravity pulls them down, 3 intestines, 5 ribcages, 4 femurs, etc. Cage's triple head fatality says it all. 😂
