Just heard the sad news about Graham Taylor passing and in the words of the man, do I not like that. What ever you thought about him, you couldn't deny his passion and love of the game and he always came across as a genuine human being. RIP.
He was honest, likeable and cared. One of the problems for him was the players he had to choose from, not great. But he chose the wrong back room team, they didnt give him much support.
his record speaks for itself. Truth is England is exaggerated, maybe the most overrated team in the World. That's what the Iceland Manager told his players when they were set to play England at the Euros: "We're up against the most overrated team in the World". Fact is England has got to most Competitions through easy opposition, look at their World Cup group today or their group at the Euros, very easy. Taylor was up against some tough sides at the time. Norway in 1993 were a lot better than today. Netherlands were a great team. England win/draw friendlies against the top teams but usually lose important matches against likes of Italy, Germany, etc or Iceland. They only beat Malta 2 nil at their WCQ last year and that was at home too....
Are we over rated? I think we are a bit like Liverpool really just a "big" football side with strong support. But we live off past glories and the last few years we have been poor but like you say, had an easy qualifying group to the Euros. Iceland played out of their skins though I think on that performance they'd have beaten anyone.
I was always dubious that the tactics he'd succeeded with at club level would work in international football. Having said that he was unlucky with injuries to players like Gascoigne, Shearer and Pearce for key games in the World Cup qualifiers. The turning point was when England were 2-0 up against the Dutch at Wembley and Gascoigne was running the match. Wouters broke his cheekbone to put him out the game and should have been sent off but wasn't, and Holland came back to get a draw. RIP Graham Taylor, an excellent club manager and an obviously decent man.
It's not easy being the manager of the England national football team. In fact there are those who think the job is jinxed. Every man who has taken it on has had this huge expectation and pressure put on them by the public, to maybe recapture some of the glory that the England side of 1966 covered themselves in. From 1990 to 1993 Graham Taylor had the job and his team got knocked out of the Euro's and failed to qualify for the World Cup. The press wasn't kind to him, in fact he was mercilessly crucified and made into a scapegoat as all fingers were pointed at him for England once again failing to make an impact on the international stage. But I like how in this interview he talks about his time as manager and even seems to have put it behind him somewhat and has a pretty cheerful and candid manner about it all.
sheer madness to agree to a fly on the wall documentary to cover your World Cup qualifying campaign...especially when you're thrown into a group with Holland, Norway and Poland...Taylor is a likeable man but was obviously prone to arrogance...recall his comment before Euro 92..."Sit back, put your feet up and watch us win it"...after that Euro 92 disaster, you would have thought Taylor would have learned his lesson...but no, in came the cameras into the England dressing room
Graham Taylor was a good manager, he did a pretty good job at watford, he led Watford from the Fourth Division to the First Division in only five years, i don't really blame him entirely on england not qualifying for the world cup 94, he didn't have the best of england sides.
Graham Taylor was a lovely guy but he just couldn’t select a decent team. He left out some real class players and played the likes of Carlton Palmer, Geoff Thomas, Andy Sinton and Keith Curle.
A bit of both. He had bad luck with sceduling, injuries and suspensions (Gascoigne was suspended for the crucial Rotterdam game) although he didn't help himself with some strange tactical selections. He was also unlucky that Koeman, who scored the free kick in the Holland qualifier, didn't get sent off in that game for a blatant red card. However, Taylor was out of his depth, although he didn't deserve the vitriol he got from the media & some fans (one spat in his face, after a game, apparently)
They are showing this again on ITV4 on Sunday at 11pm! So let's have those tape recorders on and get it on youtube for comments! "LES DEMAND IT!, LES, LES THEY CAN'T SEE YA!", "CARLTON!, We're Losing Our Shape! TONY!" Funny Stuff!
England were very unlucky to lose that Holland game, were the better side and Koeman should have been sent off before scoring the free kick. CAN WE NOT KNOCK IT?!
Gazza was inured...nuff said. Also, the same media wanted Bobby Robson out in 1988 after the Euro championsip...and now he is feted as a genius after 1990.
rip mr taylor . you genuinely cared about football and not money, modern day football and it's cancerous armchair customers should hang their head in shame
Genuine guy. However, just shows what a joke managing a national team is. I can't watch England since Steve maclaren took over. Useless. I even think sweeping change in the FA and put in a business (no football) manager. Results based. If you're not good enough or can't be bothered, you're out.
with pleasure raddaakaforestrule venables the most overrated manager ever-theman who in this months 4-4-2 mag said reaching the euro 96 semi final was his greatest achievement-well if winnning 2 matches out of 5 was his biggest achievement it shows how shit he was 2 trophies in a 23 year managerial career-one with a team inherited from menotti & the other Gascoigne got spurs to wembley virtually on his own !!!

WelshFooty Not now they won't
God bless you Mr. Taylor.Genuine, passionate and a brilliant man.
Always came across with pride and dignity.
more likeable guy than the rest that followed.
Sure but nothing to do with likeability unfortunately.
He was honest, likeable and cared. One of the problems for him was the players he had to choose from, not great. But he chose the wrong back room team, they didnt give him much support.
Agree..Deane, Sinton, Palmer...et al...
notice the only four letter word he didn't use in that documentary was 'goal'
RIP Graham Taylor, he really was a decent manager, he just had bad luck with England, his record there was actually pretty good.
How can you sat that he was probably the second worst manager we ever had, after Steve McLaren who also couldn't qualify with England.

England should give Graham Taylor another go.

I thought at the time he was a rubbish manager. But having watched this you realise it was the players fault for not following one thing he said
what sort off thing is happning here
Can someone please upload this please. It aint on you tube anymore
To this day, Graham didn't deserve all that abuse. Rest in Peace.
Graham Taylor had a look alike called Richard Beesley at Hampton in Arden cricket club in the late 1980s/early 1990s.
RIP Graham Taylor xx

What top whatever programme is this from?
can anyone upload the actual documentary?
At the end of the day, it is the player’s responsibility for winning, and they didn’t .
an anyone find/upload the full video? Has been removed from RUclips recently
I wouldn't mind that but channel 4 haven't released a dvd of it - i would buy it
r.i.p great man
Why oh WHY is "Do I not like That" STILL not out on DVD ????
RIP Graham Taylor. Ronald Koeman cost him his job and England a place in World Cup 94.
After euro 92 the wolves were at the door, let’s not lay it all on koeman (no pun intended about wolves)
Graham Taylor was a lovely guy but he just couldn’t select a decent team. He left out some real class players and played the likes of Carlton Palmer, Geoff Thomas, Andy Sinton and Keith Curle.
Just saying to your mate, referees got me the sack. At the end of the day. I get the sack. Classic Graham Taylor. Great manager sadly missed.

Yeah true, it should have been a penalty too. But to be fair they had Dennis Bergkamp who was a great player.
did he really win his first 12 matches?
D100 goo first 12 games unbeaten even now its still a record.
i didnt know that myself..
RIP Taylor
