@@TheRealRichardWong i wanted to see 4k 60 120 and 5.7 60p compared to a1 4k 60p and 120p. gh6 should work better in higher res and faster refresh for autofocus and also more detailed image quality comparison on those modes.
Hi Richard! I love your videos and how well done they are. I just wanted to pass along a secret for anyone reading the comments that the yellow box is only a subject tracking suggestion. You must confirm the yellow box is the subject you want in focus by tapping it on the screen or pressing the joy stick. This will bring hash marks around the yellow box confirming the subject and improving the Lumix auto-focus.
As a note, the Panasonic AF system is better when cranking the shutter speed to something like 1/300 or 1/600 because the AF system gets more data. Normally, people shoot using the 180 degrees shutter angle, so 4K30 should be tested using a shutter speed of 1/60 (or 180d if using the shutter angle rule). That's why the GH6 is faster when tested against the G80 or GH5mkII but slower and shows more pulsing when tested against the A1 (and, btw, the A1 is set properly).
Look at the pulsating background at 18:06 at the GH6. Do you think AF will get upgraded via firmware to be improved? Additionally the GH6 was in a disadvantage, because Richard was not standing in the middle of the picture, like he does for A1. But nevertheless the GH6 AF is worse than on alpha.
Pulsating is part of DFD. It's CDAF, which requires viewing frames in-focus and just beyond in-focus for verification. That means the pulsing will never go away as long as Panasonic uses DFD.
Richard, your tests are amazing and unique. I would like to use the GH6 in AF and I would like to use it to shoot everything, without ever taking it off. I shoot V-Log, 4K, (ALL-I 600Mbps), 10bit, 4:2:2, 50p (with Leica 12-60mm) and I'd like to ask 2 questions please: 1) I put the level on AFC. I would like to use AF in everyday life. It annoys me when he occasionally stutters to seek focus. How would you configure Sensitivity and Speed? 2) When I go to Menu/AF Mode and use "Full Area", why do I have to use the focus handle like when I use "1 Area"? Thanks for your advice.
1. I would keep the AF setting to default for best all round usage. But if you want it more stable and don't mind response is a bit slow, then you could turn DOWN both the sensitivity and speed a bit. 2. I assume mean tapping somewhere when in Full Area mode? That is to tell the camera if there is a specific area you want to focus on (override the full area AF)
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for your appreciated reply: 1) I had configured my GH6 with Speed +3 and Sensitivity -2. I thought the speed allowed the subject to be focused immediately. 2) I mean it, look at the pic please: i.postimg.cc/3rz9FGT7/All-Area.jpg In other words, why in the "Full Area" is that little square showing? What is the purpose if the fucus is in the whole area? I thank you again.
1. with speed +3, yes the camera would adjust the focus very quickly. But it means any focus adjustment would also look not so smooth. 2. You have tapped the screen to specify a particular area for the camera to focus on, You can click the little AF [ ] off area at the bottom right to return it to all area
What I noticed with the Panasonic AF is that they need the entire face to be in the frame to recognize the eye where as other AF goes for the eye itself. I think it is sometjing they can work on
In multi shot does it actually black out the view finder or drop into low resolution like the gh5. Either would be pretty annoying for an upgrade from the gh5
The only reason that could prevent me from buying is the HDR bracketing settings called AEB. The GH4 shot brackets of 3,5, and 7 in increments of 1 EV or smaller. It needs to have steps of at least 2 EV for real estate. Could you tell me if the GH6 has AEB 5 @ 2EV??
Thank you Richard. I was wanting to see some side by side AF between GH5 M2 and GH6. The GH5 M2 has AF nearly as good as the new camera.n Now I have to decide if the improved High Res mode is worth the extra cost for me of the new model. I preferred the Panny image to the Sony.
I guess it depends if you need other features like 4k120, 300fps 1080, internal prores recording, and the extra dynamic range..etc. If you don't need any of those and already have a gh5mkii I would just keep using that for now :)
Hi Richard, thank you for this very interesting comparison video and all the work you did, it is very much appreciated. The GH6 does represent a good improvement all-around, but I can't help but notice in your AF video testing (and that of other reviewers) that the pulsing in the background is still there (although slightly less noticeable than with the GH5...) After 5 years of waiting this, for me, is disappointing 😞. Cheers
Hi Paul, the g85 represent the DFD performance very close to the original GH5 at launch. That's why I did that test at the beginning of this video Do you feel the improvement is noticable or you think it's still too small?
@@TheRealRichardWong Hi Richard, as I mentioned I greatly appreciate your channel and the work you did in this video is awesome. I'll gladly admit that the GH6 offers many great improvements on the image quality (but at 2200$ it's far from being class leading compared to other similar priced cameras) and video format side of things. I have watched a ton of reviews, previews, first impressions on the GH6 and one thing I keep noticing (and most reviewers have mentioned it) is that the contrast based AF pulsing is still present (it's in your own video). Now I'll admit I don't have any hands on experience with the GH6 but from I was told (based on reliable sources) and what I read the GH6 AF doesn't perform well at all in sports and wildlife situations. Its contrast based people/animal eye AF is way behind the current market leaders like Sony, Canon and even Nikon. I can't manually focus wildlife and sports, so what good is a somewhat better image quality and more video formats if the AF is pulsing and unreliable? After waiting for five years, I have come to realize that it's time that Panasonic and I part ways. I wish Panasonic nothing but the best and maybe Panasonic and I can collaborate sometime down the road when they come up with a class leading animal eye PDAF, maybe with the GH11 in 2040 ;-) Again thank you for you great work. Cheers
@@naomishindou7197 Hi Naomi, I would love to answer your question but I'm not sure what cameras you're referring to in your question. Could you be more specific? Regards
Richard, did you have a chance to test it in real life - like on the streets where there's more than once face? Love this, though. Thank you so much for all your hard work!!
The Lumix 12-60 is the more basic and cheaper lens. It has a more plastic build and slightly slower aperture but still reasonably good image quality, offers optical image stabilization and much cheaper than the Leica 12-60 2.8-4
Appreciate it Richard, great video I think when it comes to tracking 1 person does it well but I wonder if with other faces in the scene if I would act in the same way while still focusing on the person who is more focused? Will the focus of the gh6 be similar to the performance of a sony a6300? or will it be worse? what do you think bro? Thanks
Glad to see a real AF review vs someone just reading the specs and downing it simply because its 'contrast' based...or whatever tf it is....Looks fine to me....but I have little camera knowledge.......
I really need to start working out more. All your running back and forth was making ME tired. Amazing how good the Sony AF is. Almost psychic in how quick it finds you coming into the frame. Otherwise, the GH6 (and GH5II) seem to hold their own fairly well, especially considering the price difference.
Alan, Autofocus test is my work out routine.I'm now looking forward to do the next round of running exercise :D Yes the A1's AF is really good, but the Gh6/GH5II is better than i expected.
Gh6 af is not bad. Good enough to upgrade from my g5 . The sonya1 af is better of course but considering that the a1 has the best af system on this planet the gh6 holds its own. I like what panasonic has done with this camera.
@@professionalpotato4764 4k60 no crop and a plethora of other perks and features. Plus the huuugw advantage of weight, especially from the lenses. Richard. It there any chance you would do a video. A really long detailed one of how to set and use the auto focus. An in-depth, under the hood, complete understanding tutorial. I never did get a handle on my GH5 auto focus but I fully intend on getting it down with my GH6. I think the world of GH6 owners would be as grateful as I would be if you did that. Either way. Hi As classical musician and sound ingénieur I appreciate that you put Mozart Divertimento as Music👍👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️would probably eq differently and reduce the sharpness at 800hz -3200hz range it for RUclips but nice touch anyway Bravo. Just bought a ciné lens Meike 16mm T2.2 for 280 CHf and you have nice Zhoghiye Speedmaster T1 for a ridiculus low price in comparaison to FF or S35...Everyone is saying FF is better but not everyone has unlimited budget an I doubt the average consumer in RUclips at the end can really see the difference... Yours greatings from CH Fil
Hi Fil, thanks for the EQ tips i will try that in my next AF video :D yes agree with the budget argument. FF has many strengths but the smaller sensor has its strength too.
Hi there, I don't need to. the European model has recording limits for tax reasons but all the g85 sold outside Europe don't have that recording limits
Looking great tbqh loving the improved AF One trick I'd learn over the years was shoot at 50fps then edit on a 30fps timeline for maxmium af performance but now with the GH6 that won't be needed anymore it seems
Definitely a step up for Panasonic. I wonder if it would've performed better with a slower speed setting. The one thing I noticed in certain tests like running towards it: there were some jerky/abrupt changes in focus compared to the Sony A1 which was always smooth. It's most noticeable in the background.
Yes i think it will be smoother, but it would make catching up fast movement a bit longer. So i think it's a tradeoff user need to consider what is more important to them.
So many videos complain about the lack of improvement in AF on the GH6. You seem to get much better results, do you tweak the settings at all? I ave the G9 and an Olympus camera (OM5 mkIII). The Olympus has better AF, but the G9 has way better video options, and the GH6 is amazing (for video specs). So again it's hard to know if the upgrade is worth it, if the autofocus isn't much better.
The top autofocus is Sony a1, of course, (759 phase detection AF points) ; but if compare gh6 (315 points) to gh5ii (225 focus points) - can't see a big difference, honestly! Thanks for sharing!
Hmm, A1 responds to changes in the frame much, much faster. By 2-3 seconds when entering/exiting the frame, which is an eternity. It also doesn't have any of the constant random wobble that DFD causes. 3x more expensive camera = 3x better AF.
@@TheRealRichardWong so I see for ghX you used best (and also most expensive lol) lens on the market, this is why in 80% of examples it was quite good, nice one
Dariusz, I tested with lenses like Leica 25-50 f/1.7 because: 1. I want to use a longer focal length lens with really fast aperture to make these tests more challenging. I could have test with say the cheaper Leica 12-60 f/2.8-4 or Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 and the result would be better than the Leica 25-50 f/1.7 because the camera has more depth of field. 2. So that i can compare with the full frame camera like the Sony A1 (which is a lot more expensive than the GH6) with the 24-70 f/2.8 GM (which is about same price as the Leica 25-50 1.7) and compare them with the same depth of field but with reasonably shallow depth of field. i.e. f/1.7 m43 vs f/3.4 full frame
Hello Richard. I'm new to your channel. WOW the G85 auto focus vs GH6 is really something. Quick Question. I have the GH5 but not the G85. Is the auto focus on G85 better than GH5. I have no idea. Please let me know so I have and idea of how much better it will be compared to what I'm used to on the GH5
Hi New York City Comics, when the GH5 was released, (ie with earliest firmware), it's autofocus performance is very similar to the G85. And in some of my earliest side by sidee autofocus test (you can find them on my channel), a lot of people said the G85 seems better. But Gh5 has received many updates which has improved it's autofocus performance quite a lot, which G85 has received no real AF upgrade
Dude I know you put a lot of effort in these tests.l and they are very helpful. But I feel better would be some with back lights as well as moving background like people and cars to see how a different real world scenario would be. Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion. But as a one man team, I do have concerns and limitations on where I can do autofocus test like this just by myself, especially with a bunch of cameras including a unreleased one. But will definitely think about it more and see if there is something I can do in the future
Your videos are always very nice. Thanks to share them. Maybe I'm wrong because I've only been using GH6 for 2-3 days but ...... I have problems with AF. But not with continuous "C" (edited, not "AF"), but with fixed AF. I have configured the camera to follow people, but I certainly happen to film the countryside and the streets many times without the people and I never change the camera configuration. Almost every time the GH6 goes out of focus for a few tenths of a second with the shots fixed on tripod. I see this in almost all the clips. I sold the GH5 for this problem and I'm certainly not getting better with the GH6. But then again, maybe I'm doing something wrong. Maybe I need to put the switch on S instead of leaving it on MF. But if that's the real problem, it's a nuisance. How do you concentrate on the video, if every time you have to put your hand to the controls of the GH6 for the AF and ... not only?
hi there, i'm not really sure if i understand your setup. Are you saying: 1. you are shooting video, 2. you do not want continuous AF 3. You leave it in "MF" mode and the autofocus still change when shooting video?
@@TheRealRichardWong 1. Yes, I'm shooting only videos 2) Yes, I want continuous AF (human body) because I often shoot walking people. So my I setting my GH6 in this way 3) Yes, I put the dial in "C" mode (I made a typing error, it is "C" not "AF". and when I put my camera in the tripo and I shoot fixed buildings in a city or fixed landscape, the clip often goes out of focus. Maybe I have to chance config every time??? I thank you to clear my mind.
if you want continuous autofocus shooting people, then yes set to C with human detection enabled. And when you don't want to change focus, then set to M and that would lock the focus. Otherwise, the camera will try to detect/search for any closer objects. Yes you have to change your settings depends on what you are shooting to get the best results.
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks a lot for your precious info. A last qustion please: if I use V-Log in sunny days, do you suggest to enable "dynamic range boost" (2000 ISO)? Thank you again.
If you want the best dynamic range to avoid blown out highlight then yes VLOG with dynamic range boost on. But you'll probably want to use a ND filter to keep the shutter speed down
Thanks for your efforts to show us the AF performance of GH6. Its not that bad but just not completely reliable. Please kindly do a low light test compares to other brands
Hi Richard I doing a deep study in to using my auto focus on the Gh6. You're videos are the best. A couple of quick questions that I have googled but can't seem to get the answer. I have heard that using the natural profile as oposed to vlog or cineD will help the auto focus do a lot better. Does the profile chosen make a difference because of the contrast in the picture profile? Also I have heard I should not use to shallow DOF appeture. Should I stomp down to F7.1 or F16. Is that true? I had also understood that the higher your shutter speeed the better for auto focus works but I see that in your test when you shot at 60P on the GH6 with a 180 shutter that it was not as good as 30P on the GH5ii with a much lower shutter speed. ???? One last question. Are certain lenese better for auto focus? or is that something you have to try for one self. Thanks Richard. I had asked you before about you doing a super in depth video on autofocus for GH6. There is still not one out there. Many videos but it's just a quick overview with not real substance. Thank You. Tom
hi Tom, to answer some of your questions: 1. DFD Autofocus relies on contrast so usually a high contrast picture profile would give you better results. This was especially noticeable with some earlier camera like S5 with original fw, but Panasonic has made some changes to the implementation and it seems to be better now with the GH6. I have not done any comparison with the GH6 using different profile so i can't say for sure. But i found V-LOG works OK with the GH6 2. Shallow DOF is always more demanding for any AF system, so yes if you stop down a bit that woudld help, however i found the GH6 works quite well even when i shoot at wide open. As long as your subject don't move super quickly. Shooting at f/16 woould have disadvantage to the image quality as usually it means you have to increase ISO a lot. 3. higher shutter speed and higher frame rate would usually give you better autofocus performance with DFD autofocus system. This is very noticeable with older Panasonic camera (when shooting at 180degree or faster shutter speed), but it seems to be less noticeable with GH6, at least from my own testing. 4. yes definitely some lenses are better for autofocus. The newest Panasonic lens with fastest 480hz would generally works the best 5. Sorry, i remember you have asked me to do an in-depth video of the GH6. But it is just something that requires a lot of time to prepare and a lot of time to do the testing. Unfortunately at the moment, I just can never quite catch up with my review schedule so don't really have time to work on that video and also another dozen of videos i really want to create as well. Just be aware a lot of information you read may be correct for the older Panasonic cameras are either no longer true or a lot less relevant with the latest Panasonic cameras. I feel the best way is really to do some experiment yourself and see what works best for you.
Faster shutter means it will work better for the contrast. Most ppl would be shooting 180 degree shutter therefore, this test isn’t valid for real world situations where there is blur from the camera moving and the subject moving combined
Panasonic did a tremendous work to improve on the GH6 in every area but ruin it by not implementing PDAF. Is there something Panasonic is not telling us on why they have not implement PDAF
They didn't ruin it, imost of the review videos I have seen, I haven't seen much of an issue with the AF system and it seemed to work with a couple of small exceptions. Sure its not perfect like PDAF but it seems useable and doesn't have the pulsing that the focus used to have. Unless you are doing shots that need AF all the time, it isn't necessary to use AF all the time anyway
Someone haven't understood problem. AF in great lighting situation isn't an issue. Try to compare those bodies in lowlight situation, with ISO 6400, with underexposure over 3 - 4 ev, or something like that. It'll show real autofocus skills.
Seems pretty good, but also... lets see it in 24 and 25, these are the ones where it trips the most on the other Panasonics, 30fps, gives it more frames to learn from, the other Panny's are improved in that area... But no one shoots 30, so lets see that 24/25 :P
You could have taken the highlights down a bit more in grading. Maybe highlights the eyes some more. Was this face-detect AF? I wonder how AF performs when filming puppets, fursuits and animals.
at first i was like "wow Panasonic finally fixed their autofocus and now its really great like sony or canon" until you put it up against the sony A1 which proceeded to shit all over it and destroyed all hopes of me going back to Panasonic. also even more crazy since full frame has a harder time with autofocus over m4/3.
Clear conclusion here: GH6 is better than all of the other Panas camers but still far away from Sony/Canon level and IMO still not usable in most cases. Maybe for vlogging it is good enough.
good comparison, but you didn't have the various cameras setup with common settings. F-stop, camera modes, shutter speeds, and bit levels may well impact the AF response (all uses processing power). I was actually quite impressed that how much better the AF seems to be although I still wish Panny had dropped the DFD system.
Hi Mike, i didn't lock in Manual mode, but i did try to get most of the settings as close as possible. As mentioned in 3:10, all cameras using: - standard picture profile - Aperture priority with the same aperture (or equivalent), I let the camera choose the shutter speed. - Most (not all, that was a mistake for one or two of the clips) test were shot in same colour depth if possible - human detection with standard AF settings (unless otherwise stated)
Thank you for the video. Yes look Panasonic come strong again and get the AF amazing performance ( specially for people who know how was contrast-detect AF at the start) But more Important than the improved Af it looks like they get rid of the background pulsing created by the AF-C, meaning now AF-C in the video is usable !!!
It's not really as bad as people make out is it? Sure, it isn't phaaaaaaaase detect that everyone always preaches about, but I think its good enough to get the job done.
Yes I agree. Is there room for improvement? Definitely! There are many areas it could improve. But I really don't find it terrible as well. I have shot dozens of videos so far, it has been pretty reliable.
@@TheRealRichardWong Exactly. I think its a great camera. I'm planning to buy my first professional camera in a few months (been using a pocket 2 for over a year and I've reached the limit of what I can do with it). The only reason I'm not going all in with a GH6 (which I absolutely love from what I've seen), is I think the S5 and S1h are now 3 years old and definitely due updates in the next 2 years. I think if the next panasonic full frame has all of the new functionality from the GH6 with an updated autofocus (similar to this, dfd or not) they will truly blow the competition out of the water with their functionality and colours and image quality. I think thats why I will buy an S5 (with some good glass) with the intention of upgrading when this successor arises. What do you think? as someone who isn't currently invested in any system, do you think that'd be a good shout? Thanks for the reply ^^
The s5 was only out for 2 years but yes s1h is probably close to 3 years. Hard to say what and when Panasonic will bring out the next s camera but if you look at timeline and product releases, it does make sense something will be coming soon. Having said that , there is no guarantee the next s camera will have all the greatest features of the gh6. For example, small sensor camera usually has better ibis performance, and gh6 has exceptional heat management therefore it can shoot unlimited 4k120 and other high bit rate videos. So... Micro four thirds of full frame? It is a hard question to answer, I myself used both as they have their pros and cons. But S5 is crazy good deal right now.
@@TheRealRichardWong Thats what I was thinking, it does seem logical that something will be coming somewhen in the mid term if not short term. and yes, you're absolutely right about stabilisation. The GH6 has phenomenal IBIS. The S1H also has great heat management though and unlimited record times etc. Honestly, if I get the S5 it will just be a stepping stone and I would always be aiming for the S1h successor (Whatever that may be) when it eventually drops. it is definitely a difficult question to answer though and the GH6 does still make a compelling case. The S5 is really a mindblowingly good deal though. especially when you take into account how much you can save on lenses (compared with the f1.7 mft lenses) Thanks again for the reply and great video ^^
no worries! If you are unsure, i think maybe get the S5, the reason is because it should be quite a bit cheaper than the GH6. And if you use it for a year or two, whenever a S1HII comes out, then you still can keep it as a 2nd camera i'm sure it would still be a fantastic camera in a few years time.
Yeah unfortunately the AF is still a struggle. Look at the Sony A1 comparison near the end, and pay attention to the background (not Richard). It blurs smoothly, meaning the camera stays on the subject throughout. The GH6 background blurring jerks in steps, meaning it constantly loses and reacquires the subject. The rest of the specs are pretty good - but AF is a real disappointment though. You may say 'real film makers don't use AF', but even if you only need it 10% of the time, it can be the difference between getting the exact shot you want, versus making a compromise because your gear can't quite keep up.
@@TheRealRichardWong I sold my S1 because it is basically unusable in lowlight situations. If Panasonic went with PDAF they would have sold multiple times more cameras. They can compete directly with Canon and Sony,
4k30 doesn't make sense (who will buy this new camera to use 4k30, I don't know). Especially with shutter 1/400.... You should test on video shutter angle 180...
1. The age of short attention span social media made AF the end all and be all in the minds of the proletariat. It's easy to make an impression. Bit depth, color, not having to use a damn gimbal on every shot etc? Not so easy to make an impression. And don't even get me started on photo. 2. in the age of social media, if you're not a conformist of the social media norm, you're a pariah. anyone not using PDAF should be burned at the stake. DfD was used for a good reason. My advice? Get it from the horse's mouth. Matt and Sean on Lumix Live.
Constant pulsing and background fluttering in 2022 doesn't make sense . This camera is not for the most videographers but for the few 'GH' die-hards who spends a lot of time re-taking and editing ...😩
No that's not so simple. Please listen to the Panasonic rep guy about autofocus in GH6 here : ruclips.net/video/30gKcdCSTQk/видео.html. The GH6 was clearly developed with image quality first in mind (noise, dynamics, resolution), not autofocus. But Panasonic plan to develop a new camera more "photo oriented" with new autofocus technologies. The guy evokes PDAF, TOF and maybe even more advanced technologies, who knows... So let's see the autofocus in the coming Lumix photo cameras (maybe in a G9mkII ?).
@@ericmenu5408 It's not like PDAF hurts image quality. That's a hoax and any perceivable image quality loss is when you do something extreme like underexpose 6 stops. When the pixels are so nanoscopic, 1000 af pixels mean nothing to the image of >20million pixels. If image quality was first in mind, they should have abandoned the mirrorless form factor, and made a box camera with inbuilt ND filters+IBIS.
@@professionalpotato4764 you didn’t understand : they never said that PDAF was hurting image quality, they just said that they wanted to improve image quality in terms of noise, dynamic and resolution (compared to previous GH models. They said they started to work on GH6 at the GH4 release time). So they just didn’t focus their efforts to really improve the autofocus on the GH6. But they said also that they are well aware that customers want PDAF or TOF or other improved autofocus technology, and they said it will come, but in another future Lumix camera (more photo oriented probably, like a G9mkII)
Actually there’s already some low light videos of the gh6. It matches the GH5s’ dual ISO. So I think it’s safe to say that it’s miles ahead of the dreadful GH5 low light

The gh5 2 af looks pretty good. As an original gh5 owner i am impressed.
with updates the gh5s and g9 are pretty much the same (AF wise), and the G9 being years old is cheap(ish).

I shoot V-Log, 4K, (ALL-I 600Mbps), 10bit, 4:2:2, 50p (with Leica 12-60mm) and I'd like to ask 2 questions please:
1) I put the level on AFC.
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for your appreciated reply:
1) I had configured my GH6 with Speed +3 and Sensitivity -2.
Thanks Richard! Actually I am quite relieved to see the GH5 II's performance. The G85 is almost comical.
What I noticed with the Panasonic AF is that they need the entire face to be in the frame to recognize the eye where as other AF goes for the eye itself. I think it is sometjing they can work on
All you notice is what the UI is showing you.
In multi shot does it actually black out the view finder or drop into low resolution like the gh5. Either would be pretty annoying for an upgrade from the gh5
the high res multishot? it black out the screen.
Thank you Richard👋
The only reason that could prevent me from buying is the HDR bracketing settings called AEB. The GH4 shot brackets of 3,5, and 7 in increments of 1 EV or smaller. It needs to have steps of at least 2 EV for real estate. Could you tell me if the GH6 has AEB 5 @ 2EV??
I wonder how the Sony and Panny AF compares in low light
I will see if i have chance to test that in the future!
Thanx Richard 👍🏻 very instructive
Thank you Richard. I was wanting to see some side by side AF between GH5 M2 and GH6. The GH5 M2 has AF nearly as good as the new camera.n Now I have to decide if the improved High Res mode is worth the extra cost for me of the new model. I preferred the Panny image to the Sony.
I guess it depends if you need other features like 4k120, 300fps 1080, internal prores recording, and the extra dynamic range..etc. If you don't need any of those and already have a gh5mkii I would just keep using that for now :)
Thr gh6 is more likely to see additional improvements than the gh5ii
The stronger the CPU used for DFD contrast = better AF for Panasonic using AI technology.
Hi Richard, thank you for this very interesting comparison video and all the work you did, it is very much appreciated.
The GH6 does represent a good improvement all-around, but I can't help but notice in your AF video testing (and that of other reviewers) that the pulsing in the background is still there (although slightly less noticeable than with the GH5...)
After 5 years of waiting this, for me, is disappointing 😞.
I wish Panasonic nothing but the best and maybe Panasonic and I can collaborate sometime down the road when they come up with a class leading animal eye PDAF, maybe with the GH11 in 2040 ;-)
Again thank you for you great work.
Cheers

For the GH6 can you recommend the best lens that is suitable for event videography if budget is no issue?
Leica 10-25 f/1.7 and Leica 25-50 f/1.7
Richard, did you have a chance to test it in real life - like on the streets where there's more than once face? Love this, though. Thank you so much for all your hard work!!
Hi Madknac, Not on a busy street, but I did some tests with a few people inside the frame and that works well .
Please explain the difference in betwwen lumix and leica 12-60mm lence for GH6
The Lumix 12-60 is the more basic and cheaper lens. It has a more plastic build and slightly slower aperture but still reasonably good image quality, offers optical image stabilization and much cheaper than the Leica 12-60 2.8-4
Bro you are doing very good auto focus compair , know one done this type of comparison i love it 🎉 keep doing Bro 🙂
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
Thanks
it seems works well, BUT i have to say i have not any controlled testing with another camera to say if it's better/same/worse
Alan, Autofocus test is my work out routine.I'm now looking forward to do the next round of running exercise :D
Yes the A1's AF is really good, but the Gh6/GH5II is better than i expected.
Gh6 af is not bad. Good enough to upgrade from my g5 . The sonya1 af is better of course but considering that the a1 has the best af system on this planet the gh6 holds its own. I like what panasonic has done with this camera.
Not to mention the price difference!
@@AaronJacksonJS You get almost the same AF with the A7iv though. Granted the 4k60p crop is a huuuuuuge deal breaker.
Either way. I am an Pana GH4,5,5s BMPCC4k MFT user and for concert video recording the 2 time crop is a blessing because I shoot mostly télé except for the Total for the whole stage and MFT lens are cheap.

Hi Fil, thanks for the EQ tips i will try that in my next AF video :D
yes agree with the budget argument. FF has many strengths but the smaller sensor has its strength too.
For my use case the GH6 autofocus is actually good enough! I'm still happily using my sony a6300 and I believe they perform the same in this regard!
Thanks for the video. But one question : how did you unlock the recording time limit on the G85 ?
Hi there, I don't need to. the European model has recording limits for tax reasons but all the g85 sold outside Europe don't have that recording limits

Thanxs for the test, have to admit I am impressed, GH6 is not bad at all! Like the smoothness.
Looking great tbqh loving the improved AF
One trick I'd learn over the years was shoot at 50fps then edit on a 30fps timeline for maxmium af performance but now with the GH6 that won't be needed anymore it seems
Yes it appears to be the case from my testing
Gh6 Af performs the best at 4k 60p. Why most of the footage here is done at 30p??
Definitely a step up for Panasonic. I wonder if it would've performed better with a slower speed setting. The one thing I noticed in certain tests like running towards it: there were some jerky/abrupt changes in focus compared to the Sony A1 which was always smooth. It's most noticeable in the background.
Yes i think it will be smoother, but it would make catching up fast movement a bit longer. So i think it's a tradeoff user need to consider what is more important to them.
I love this camera the new Lumix GH6 is awesome I have currently G85 would love to upgrade but the price is steep 😁
the GH6 would be a HUGE upgrade compare to the G85. i have a G85 too which i used a lot for my RUclips as well
So many videos complain about the lack of improvement in AF on the GH6.
Hi Mark, most of my autofocus test use default settings. And if i change the settings, i would describe it in the video :)
The top autofocus is Sony a1, of course, (759 phase detection AF points) ; but if compare gh6 (315 points) to gh5ii (225 focus points) - can't see a big difference, honestly! Thanks for sharing!
and what about the OM-1 ? It seems pretty awesome too
@@AlexIn_Tech Looks like it is, but can't see much video, for now, with the autofocus performance test!
Hmm, A1 responds to changes in the frame much, much faster. By 2-3 seconds when entering/exiting the frame, which is an eternity. It also doesn't have any of the constant random wobble that DFD causes. 3x more expensive camera = 3x better AF.
thanks~can u compare with em1 iii?

@@TheRealRichardWong omg, sorry...
No worries my friend
@@TheRealRichardWong so I see for ghX you used best (and also most expensive lol) lens on the market, this is why in 80% of examples it was quite good, nice one
Dariusz,
I tested with lenses like Leica 25-50 f/1.7 because:

@@TheRealRichardWong Makes perfect sense. If you lived close by I could have watched the cameras and help either videos at times.
Thanks for the offer Sohail!!
Are you saying:
1. you are shooting video,
2. you do not want continuous AF
3. You leave it in "MF" mode
and the autofocus still change when shooting video?
@@TheRealRichardWong
1. Yes, I'm shooting only videos
2) Yes, I want continuous AF (human body) because I often shoot walking people. So my I setting my GH6 in this way
3) Yes, I put the dial in "C" mode (I made a typing error, it is "C" not "AF". and when I put my camera in the tripo and I shoot fixed buildings in a city or fixed landscape, the clip often goes out of focus.

Thank You. Tom
hi Tom, to answer some of your questions:
1. But i found V-LOG works OK with the GH6
The newest Panasonic lens with fastest 480hz would generally works the best
Is it just me. Or the AF Was Pretty Good
(Sure it's not Sony or canon perfect. But comparable to Fuji)
i feel it's better than my Fuji XT3
Seems pretty good, but also... lets see it in 24 and 25, these are the ones where it trips the most on the other Panasonics, 30fps, gives it more frames to learn from, the other Panny's are improved in that area... But no one shoots 30, so lets see that 24/25 :P
You could have taken the highlights down a bit more in grading.
Maybe highlights the eyes some more.
Was this face-detect AF?
I wonder how AF performs when filming puppets, fursuits and animals.
oh i didn't do any grading, they are all just auto exposure (aperture priority) and ungraded video footage
@@TheRealRichardWong It says "V-Log graded (dynamic boost mode on)" in the video.
Ah my bad. You mean the vlogging style test. I completely forgot about that part. Thanks for the feedback
at first i was like "wow Panasonic finally fixed their autofocus and now its really great like sony or canon" until you put it up against the sony A1 which proceeded to shit all over it and destroyed all hopes of me going back to Panasonic. also even more crazy since full frame has a harder time with autofocus over m4/3.
i feel like gh6 autofocus ain't bad at this point but sony's autofocus is just ridiculous ain't it
Wow - great work RW. It Actually beats the Sony, Impressive!.
Beats the Sony? Are you serious?
I lpove u mister wong...
Everyone forgets or doesn’t notice AF when you have a good story but bad audio is just bad even with a good story
Audio definitely is super important!
Clear conclusion here: GH6 is better than all of the other Panas camers but still far away from Sony/Canon level and IMO still not usable in most cases. Maybe for vlogging it is good enough.
Looks good to me ☺️
good comparison, but you didn't have the various cameras setup with common settings. F-stop, camera modes, shutter speeds, and bit levels may well impact the AF response (all uses processing power). I was actually quite impressed that how much better the AF seems to be although I still wish Panny had dropped the DFD system.
Hi Mike,
i didn't lock in Manual mode, but i did try to get most of the settings as close as possible. As mentioned in 3:10, all cameras using:
- standard picture profile
- Aperture priority with the same aperture (or equivalent), I let the camera choose the shutter speed.
- Most (not all, that was a mistake for one or two of the clips) test were shot in same colour depth if possible
- human detection with standard AF settings (unless otherwise stated)
nice video, but please some other music next time would be better 🙃
haha what music do you suggest? Every time i put some music, i got people complain about the type of music I put as the background music
@@TheRealRichardWong haha yeah i see, personnaly i dont like classical music, but indeed we all have different tastes 😎
af is still too slow. the difference is obvious. pity that Panasonic is so stubborn to use an af that has such obvious limits of performance
nice
Thank you for the video. Yes look Panasonic come strong again and get the AF amazing performance ( specially for people who know how was contrast-detect AF at the start)
But more Important than the improved Af it looks like they get rid of the background pulsing created by the AF-C, meaning now AF-C in the video is usable !!!
Best video compares. I love it!! Run many times. Hahahaha
Glad you enjoyed my running!
The S5 is really a mindblowingly good deal though. especially when you take into account how much you can save on lenses (compared with the f1.7 mft lenses)
Thanks again for the reply and great video ^^
The G85 totally wins this by a mile. Sony sucks. DFD for life.
The Sony just destroyed GH6 on tracking af! 😫
GH6 is definitely better in autofocus tracking.
If i could give you 1000 likes , i would do it bro...
At least for ur running 😅
👏👏👏👏
Thank you so much ❤️
hope the pulsing can go away in the future, and the next generation of S5 will be even lighter with a 30MP plus sensor!
While there are certainly limitations, but with the right setting, i honestly don't feel the pulsing is that bad.
@@TheRealRichardWong I sold my S1 because it is basically unusable in lowlight situations. If Panasonic went with PDAF they would have sold multiple times more cameras. They can compete directly with Canon and Sony,
So shitty dynamic range in standart profile, ehh
GH5Ii seems to do better
Not challenging at all. Please try staying out of the center of the screen. Very poor!
in the vs sony comparison he mostly stood at the side of the panasonic camera. also several times he went out and in.
The Music kill
Sony’s AF should be called AF AF
Panasonic AF T_T
Sony A1 eats this brand new cake for a breakfast 😜 (Sony probably pays lumix not to develop the AF system) 😅
Constant pulsing and background fluttering in 2022 doesn't make sense . This camera is not for the most videographers but for the few 'GH' die-hards who spends a lot of time re-taking and editing ...😩
😢much better af, skin tone color
why the cry face? :)
Panasonic ... Why have not pdaf.... That fucking simple......
@@professionalpotato4764 Panasonic made box cameras in m43 and full frame.
GH6 auto focus still suck
a1 color space still suck
Panasonic did nothing to address the low lighting issues and fast focus. How disappointing. I guess Sony wins.
Actually there’s already some low light videos of the gh6. It matches the GH5s’ dual ISO. So I think it’s safe to say that it’s miles ahead of the dreadful GH5 low light
