    Running about 3 hours late due to striking a downed tree in North Auburn, no. 4014 powers up the final stretch of 2.0% grade up to the summit at Norden. The engine is accelerating it's consist out of a 10 mph speed restriction at Soda Springs with minimal assistance from the accompanying diesel and puts on quite a show as she enters and exits the snow shed at Norden.
    There, we are afforded a rare opportunity to see the clamshell stack hood in action. The stack hood deflector had a dual role, in which it protected tunnel roofs from being damaged by the exhaust plume by defusing and redirecting it rearward, and also protected the crew from getting the exhaust kickback that would otherwise bounce off the tunnel roof, onto the roadbed, and back up into the cab. Enjoy and stay tuned =)
    Consist is about 1,550 tons behind the main tender, including the diesel & water cars.

    FAQ (Read before commenting):
    The water overflow from just in front of the rear cylinder on the fireman's side is the exhaust steam injector overflow port. Discharge from this port is normal when starting and stopping the injector, and when the injector switches between live steam and exhaust steam.
    The diesel locomotive, while no longer necessary for PTC compliance, will continue to periodically be used where it is expedient for steam locomotive fuel conservation and assistance on long, sustained grades (power / dynamic braking).

    This has gotta be the first time in nearly 70 years a large articulated steam locomotive had been on Donner Pass, not including 3985 in 1999. The route was formerly the stomping ground of the SP Cab Forwards.

    Definitely a nice treat seeing the clamshell stack in use. Really helps out. It’s also amazing to see a variety of diesels behind 4014 again instead of just 4015.
    Also thanks again for informing me about the tree damage on Facebook. I’m happy it was minimal.

      Since 4014 has PTC now, they can throw any diesel behind it!

    That is awesome! By the looks of your pics, I thought it was going way slower. But no that train was moving! Great work!

    In a manner of speaking, shades of the City of San Francisco! 4014 is gorgeous! And that impressive stack talk. A hard working steam locomotive personified. Thank you, Union Pacific, for a miraculous restoration! And thank you, guys, for an impressive catch of this beauty high in the Sierras.

      It is a snow shed. Used in various places where he snow gets exceptionally deep in the winter to keep it off the tracks.

    Why is the diesel locomotive still being used after the retrofit last winter?

      @FanRailer So, again what was the point of the retrofit last winter?

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  2 месяца назад

      And again, read the description. Having PTC installed so the 4014 can run without a diesel gives them more operational flexibility. The old LeaPTC system forced the engine to remain tethered to the diesel even when PTC isn't needed, like in yards.
      While it's a nice novelty to see a steam locomotive operate without an accompanying diesel these days, the logistical requirements of these several-thousand-mile long system-wide tours makes it a no brainer to include the diesel in the consist, especially for a stretch of track like Donner Pass.
