Alan Silvestri's score for this scene is magnificent. What a great scene for an incredibly underrated movie. Stephen Hopkins really did a great job on it.
When I first saw this scene in 95' on VHS at the time, I remember belting my eyes out. You can see that even with his bad knee Gaerity paces up & down, & even sheds a tear for his countrymen which suggests that he regrets doing it. He knows what he is, & as Max explodes, you can see Gaerity's mental side take over as the pleasure of another bomb exceeds his morality. Alan's music is what really stands out here though. He is on fire right here. He manages to execute all the cues but not without capitulating that haunting motif. This film has gone down as a masterpiece for me. I don't care what anyone says. The fact that this has 6.2 on IMDB just proves that people find emotional tension uncomfortable.
Calling this an action movie is a mistake; the emotional take makes this really a thriller. Siskel comparing this to _Speed_ is a no (apples and oranges) 🍎🍊 And you are SO right! I rank this among Alan Silvestri's top 5 scores
If you're talking about talking about Tommy's Irish accent, the "test audiences" are to blame for that. They "couldn't understand" Tommy or Jeff (apparently because of their distinct voices), so they re-recorded the dialogue TWICE (after another complaint 😩)
This movie is a sentimental masterpiece. Regarding the struggle, the Irish people had to go through, during that time. I don't know about others, But, to me, this movie has a special place within my heart. And, Lee Jones's character! 💚💚💚💚

Goosebumps. I remember this scene vividly as a child and only just found it again (yeah age appropriate films weren’t a thing) but this scene at 8/9 was so powerful
This film is so underrated it defies belief. Yeh the accents aren't great but it's full of very powerful scenes like this and helped no end by a great Alan Silvestri score.
If it had been Kurt Russell as Jimmy Dove and his dad playing his uncle, it still would’ve been good. But god bless Jeff bridges and his late father for this great work of art.
He's crying because he regrets killing an innocent countryman. He smiles because he relishes in the pain that he causes Liam. He will go on making him suffer the loss of loved ones.
my Comanche Father died of covid w a collapsed lung and there was nothing I could do but be there for him. the Ndn statute was to show even during history Natives Prevail.
Gaerity and Liam were best pals back in the day. And no doubt, Gaerity knew Liam's uncle from the past. I believe his tears were genuine until he heard Liam scream and was reminded of how his own sister was accidently killed in his failed bomb attempt at a town square prevented by Liam at another time. He smiles because he feels he got back at Liam.

it's funny, Max's House with the hot tub was only 1 building away from this school. only 1 building separated the two in real life. you could have thrown a baseball from the school into the hot tub. If you walked through the backyard behind the hot tub you are about 60 feet from the merry go round. And the railings you see behind max on the merry-go-round can be seen from the bottom of the steps Forest Whitaker is jogging up in the movie. The steps are called "40 Flights". the top rail of these is the end of the dead end street Max's House is on. and the opposite type scenario, is where the police were searching the harbor. Anthony appears to look up and see Dove, to go over and search with him. In fact, that shipyard the police were searching at, and the dock that Dove, and the Dolphin were at, were a little over a mile apart, separated by the Chelsea.
@schrodingcheshirecat I hope you can help! My dad was watching this and asked if I saw this statue when I visited Boston. I had not but just now spent an hour or so trying to piece it together. Who knows how much has changed in 30 years! But do you know either exactly where this statue is or, if it's gone, what the statue was?
@@mattwatt33 no problem. The statue was made for the movie. It was a replica of St. Sebastian, one that resembles Max. It's no longer there. But the exact alley way is still there at 340 Bunker street. You can see the same rail at the end that was there in the movie. Just look straight through the alley on Google maps. Do a 180 and you you see the Doherty Playground with the wall you see in the scene where Jimmy Dove is getting off his motorcycle. Part of the original gate is still at the alley way. If you double click on the alley it takes you right by Max's house from the movie. That's because that house is right below the school. 44 mead Street. And the end of that street is 40 Mead Street. The top of 40 Flights that Anthony was jogging up in the movie. But they destroyed that statue making the movie. I got more info if you're curious. Boomer's real name was Woody. I got the dock numbers, street names and such. Hope that helped some.
@@mattwatt33 I do need to add, I think Max's house has been changed now. I think Google maps just keeps the older image for popularity. But you can tell we're it was. Because you can see the school above it in the background
@@schrodingcheshirecat Awesome! Thanks for all the info. I was right in that area on Google Maps thanks to your earlier comment about the 40 Flights, but I couldn't quite piece everything together. The opening shot in this clip was throwing me off. As the camera pulls focus from the statue to Dove, you get a glimpse of a tall building with a sign that's either orange or red. I still don't see that on Google StreetView. Of course, I know, as they're shooting movies, they could set up in one location, and the very next shot in the finished film could be on a different block, a different street, or even a different neighborhood. Not to mention whatever might've changed in Charlestown in the last 30 years.
