‘Shoplifting Is Contributing To The Decline Of The UK High Street’

  • The boss of John Lewis has called for a royal commission into Britain’s high streets, which she said risk becoming “looting grounds” for crime and overrun with vacant shops.
Dame Sharon White, chairwoman of the John Lewis Partnership, which also owns Waitrose, said some UK towns and cities have become “shells of their former selves”.
TalkTV’s Alex Phillips enquires about the reasons behind an uptick in these ‘low level’ crimes.
Emma Revell blames the lack of police investigation and imprisonment as the leading cause of soaring retail crimes.

Put Bobby’s back onto the street where they can actively engage with the community and not dancing to the Macarena, but catching criminals… there’s a thought. Don’t slap people on the wrist be harsh on criminals and give the people there safety back. Reward civilians for intervening rather then charge them for assault for stopping a yob shoplifting. Citizens arrest has gone! Justice gone! Policing gone and replaced with cameras which are about as useful for us as a chocolate teapot.
It’s actually an easy one, if you have the balls and not woke.

I wouldn't save it. Retail parks are better in my view. There's free parking for those that drive. Nearer for lots of people than having to travel to a city centre. Supermarkets sell decent clothes, some have pharmacies and cafes. People are busy and one stop shopping is better than trawling around a busy city.

The shops here in Bulgaria seem to be thriving, and we have lots of Turkish barbers too. Cafe culture is thriving, no one sleeps in shop doorways, we don't have food banks and the streets are safe to walk at night.

They do come here via the black market ''rubber boats'' across the Channel discarding paperwork for a good reason.

It's not the shoplifters, its the gutless policy of allowing the thieves to get away with it, give retail staff a big stick and the legal rights to crack a scull or 2, the thieving towrags will soon give up

    • @Andy-wx4wx
      @Andy-wx4wx 8 месяцев назад +2

Agree. Retail staff are told not to get involved in case they are assaulted which is fair enough. However, shoplifters have an open market now, especially if they are not phased by being arrested. Police are told to record crime and then get rid as soon as possible, it's all about Home Office statistics.....

My home town had everything you could imagine pre 2000, now it’s charity shops , Turkish barbers and betting shops.
Even a fairly large Tesco left 5 years ago, and a burger king shut down.
It’s more to do with the astronomical absurd business rates shops face.

Nobody wants to stick their head above the parapet and point the finger at the largest culprit groups because if they are politicians it would be the ruin of their career and if it were a journalist or broadcaster it would see them cancelled. There is simply no shame in some communities for acting like feral vermin and looting & shoplifting. Just look at the culprits, they are 99% the usual suspects but nobody will say so, we are too scared/too polite to point it out.

The decline in the high street is nothing to do with Shoplifting but more to do with:
    a) councils with expensive parking prices
    b) consumers spending habits changing(buying online, cutting back in a cost of living crises, etc)
    c) shops not evolving enough, same stock most if not all the time, to expensive products etc
