Your interpretation of Lysithea is so empowering and makes me emotional. I’m an autistic girl and I love headcanoning characters as autistic. It’s a way for me to feel like I belong and also understand myself more. It’s late and I’m not good at words right now but I wanted to leave a comment saying I really love your interpretation and I think you did such a good job clearly presenting your reasoning and defending yourself!! I especially love how you argued against the idea of Lysithea not being autistic because she’s just traumatised. I see that kind of argument all the time around similar headcanons and it’s really frustrating, because like, a lot of autistic people also have trauma and other disorders like anxiety and depression, but that doesn’t make them any less autistic!! Anyways, brilliant video, sorry you had to deal with so many rude and dismissive people, and know that this video will forever rattle around in my little ol brain

It's fun to hear your take because I feel the same about Bernadetta, autism, gameplay, relatable traits, and all. Seeing someone have a similar experience with a character that I'm fond of but haven't had that consideration for is lovely!
The deconstruction of Occam's razor through art for objective meanings rather than looking at it as a subjective experience, and considering what it makes you feel, why, and how you bond with it is something that I genuinely think is a great take on the pitfalls of media analysis, because talking about art is often times, to some degree, talking about yourself.
Hope this isn't too nerdy and wordy but the point is, this was good!

Saw the thumbnail/title and immediately said “…oh yeah that makes sense.” Being something of a Fire Emblem head myself I’m naturally on the spectrum too and yeah a lot of this clicked naturally the second attention was drawn to it. I think I mainly just didn’t connect the dots with Lysithea because I’ve always been so focused on being in the “Byleth is absolutely a real rounded character you guys just aren’t paying attention” camp and a lot about them hit in that way for me in a way none of the other MUs did, emphasized even more by their increased characterization in Three Hopes. There’s definitely a good few characters all serieswide that can get an autistic reading fairly easily even if they’re definitely in the minority.
So when’s someone hitting back with the autistic Bantu essay?

As someone on the spectrum myself, I actually found Lysithea very hard to like for the longest time. I was mostly soured by her whole "I'm not a child" thing, and was especially put off by how she disrespected Hanneman, Marianne and especially Ignatz (though in hindsight Hamneman was also being somewhat insensitive himself). On one hand I thought that she was just being needlessly defensive against people who genuinely had no ill will or intent against her, but on the other hand there was always something about her reactions that hit a little close to home.
I can act like that sometimes. Even against friends I've known for years, I can misinterpret a harmless jab or seemingly neutral comment as a personal attack, and I really have to sit back and think for a minute before opening my mouth, because if I opened my mouth in that moment it would be a reply similar to how Lysithea reacts. Once I thought on that, and also took some extra time to admire how dedicated she is to put the little life she has left to use, I warmed up to her quite a bit.
Though I think Three Hopes did the most for me in making me like Lysithea. Primarily in that some of the supports in that game are written on the basis of the player having known how her original supports were, and 3 Copes Lysithea taking some initiative to admit where she was wrong. Her supports with Marianne and Ignatz were much needed in this regard (now make Hamneman playable already dammit).
Hell, even in her Shez B support she tries her best to admit that she overreacted even though she clearly still feels slighted. I can't tell you the amount of times I've been in that exact same scenario. Ironically, I kinda ship her with Shez purely because his brutal honesty is exactly what she needs.
With all that said, your video put a lot of stuff into perspective on whybI felt certain ways when reading her dialogue. While I personally don't know if I would say she's autistic, I can definitely see it, and I do think it makes the character even more interesting as a result!

  • @Xetetic
    @Xetetic Год назад +23

Ever since I saw your Reddit post about this I was wondering if you'd make a video on it. I'm really glad you did, considering the... state it ended up in.
One thing I will say about the "trauma argument" is that a lot of young adult literature features traumatized characters, or more generally, a traumatic event that serves as the basis for the plot, usually because it's relatable. Maybe not Lysithea's trauma specifically, but certainly characters like Raphael, Bernadetta, and Felix have relatable forms of trauma to some people.
While your arguments for dismissing the "Lysithea is just traumatized"/Occam's razor argument are sound, Occam's razor also falls flat simply because many of the 3H cast is traumatized either at the beginning of the game, or at the start of the war phase. The differences between the characters often are found outside of their specific traumas. So when the trauma is not relatable, their character traits and goals at least are.
All that said, I think your reading of Lysithea is a good one and I appreciate the fact that this is now in video form.

  • @BurningBerend

I usually don't take the time to comment on a vid, so that means something in this video really struck with me. I saw some posts on shitpostemblem and wondered what the original thing was about and I'm glad to see that it came from you. As someone on the spectrum as well as being queer, seeing non-hostile simple analysis like this is honestly just soothing. Unfortunately Lysithea really didn't quite click with me throughout the game as her brattiness and 'AM I A CHILD TO YOU?!?' was sometimes overplayed and hard to get through. But I think it's wonderful that so many people can see so much in different characters and relate to them in many different ways!
And like you showed in the vid itself, a lot of people are really hostile towards the POSSIBILITY of a queer or neurodivergent reading of characters. So seeing both of those in your analysis of a character I overlooked by her first impressions (what were her Ignatz supports??), this was a real fun watch!
Good luck in your hunt for a fun internship as well!

one more argument is her as a unit, she pretty much only has 3 good growth stats with the rest being really bad, she also has the most weaknesses in the game at base along with bernie and yuribird and there are several supports and dialog wich actually seem to reference their strenghts and weaknesses(sylvain with reason, yuri with riding, hubert with flying, leonie with bows, claude with flying and marianne with riding and flying) so these are canon to some extend wich means even as a unit she is very picky about what she is good in

I've only just found this video while it's a genuinely good analysis of Lysithea, your analysis of Edelgard is rather dismissive, in my opinion.
3:38 "If only there was another character that went through the same thing" but doesn't show the same traits of autism.
    - Edelgard doesn't hyperfixate: She does. A lot. If there's one thing Edelgard does, it's hyperfixate. She's hyperfixated on removing the crest system and the nobility. She started a war because of that. A lot of her supports mention either crests or nobility (Hanneman, Linhardt, Ferdinand.) She disregards Linhardt's studies as not only do crests not interest her but they go against what she does want. She does this until she realises that Linhardt's research *can* benefit her and then she fully supports him, enabling him to take his time and fully fund his research to get the best results possible.
    - Edelgard is well spoken: This is true but I believe it's a mask. Masking, as I'm sure you know, is a common tactic by autistic people to "blend in" with the neurotypical. The only person she doesn't wear this mask around is Byleth around the end of CF (as seen if you talk to her in her room in CF when she talks about her Byleth painting) after they completely turned tail on Rhea, saved her life from Kostas and chose to go to war with her even if they didn't agree with her methods. She even keeps the mask on around Hubert despite them knowing each other since they were children. In Azure Gleam, at some part during the game Edelgard become completely mute after being forcibly turned into the Hegemon Husk. I think this might be the "real" Edelgard, someone who's scared of anything and everything around them but she fights that fear with a brave face.
    - Edelgard is emotionably sensitive: No, I really don't think so. She starts a war at the age of 18 because she hates the heirarchy, ignoring any sort of opinion that it would be a bad idea. In her supports with Bernadetta and Ferdinand, she tends to lose her temper quicker than most characters that talk to them. She's also extremely harsh to Byleth for mourning their dad's death. She's downright cruel to Linhardt, basically saying that his crest research is useless and it will never amount to anything during the early supports.
So my personal theory is that the crests are representitive of autism itself and that the experimentation was an unintentional reference to medical practices intended to "cure" autism. Although ultimately failing, history has tried to remove autism from the world or even use autism as a weapon in order to remove something else, vaccines being a very common example. Instead of "curing" autism, Twsitd tried to heighten it so they could create "superhumans" that can't focus anything other than their goals and then manipulate those that were tested upon to doing their bidding.

"Death of the Author" as an analytical ideology is not a strong argument in favor of completely ignoring a writer's intentions, frankly. When taken too seriously, it's basically a massive, arrogant cope used to justify reading subtext into a given work that isn't actually there. You can assert any nonsensical idea you want, making everything and thus nothing valid, depriving the work of meaning rather than adding it. The fact that you _can_ deconstruct anything subjectively like this by willfully deciding to ignore context and substituting it for whatever you want is not really that valuable or intelligent. It's just wishful thinking, and I've seen it get quite childish and malicious at times.
That said, art is ultimately a communication of ideas between people, and complex communication, especially about ambiguous ideas born of our fantasies, will always be imprecise, thus open to interpretation beyond simple misunderstanding. As far as I can tell, you've only ever approached this notion that Lysithea could potentially be autistic as a theory, and you have considerable evidence from the game itself to support that theory. I don't think it's that controversial a take, given your claim isn't that it's surely true, but just a possibility, whether intended or not. That's the sort of interpretation that _does_ expand on the potential meaning and depth of a work, so it's a shame it garnered a hostile response.
Part of it is that people are just twitchy these days. They're tired of someone from any given demographic "claiming" characters and acting like their headcanon is necessarily real, and if you disagree you're some sort of bigot. To be honest, when I clicked on the video, I was prepared for a much less humble and reasonable argument on your part. It doesn't justify people jumping to conclusions and then straight down your throat, though.
There's still a needless stigma and othering lingering around autism, too. Another commenter mentioned that in many fictional universes, ASD _as a diagnosis_ doesn't exist, therefore it would never be called out anyway, so it stands to reason you'd need to read into a character to draw what is ultimately an intended conclusion. Given that, though, I think it's interesting how, without couching it in this specific context, the traits that support the idea that Lysithea could be autistic are just character traits.
The behaviors which tend to result from neurology on the shallower end of the autism spectrum are really not that unusual at all. It's only in relatively recent history that the similarities in neurology to more severe cases were drawn, which is the association that scares people. Before these behaviors were pathologized, they were just the character that some people had that nobody thought anything much of... and practically speaking, that hasn't stopped being the case even now that it's been diagnosed and given a label.

Doesn't matter. Is it possible for someone to write that comment as bigotry? Certainly. Ironic bigotry forces others to either assume it's not ironic, or potentially ignore unironic bigotry. The latter is not a risk worth taking. You can still be funny and edgy without using bigoted language, just do that and make life better for everybody.
