  • Join the concrete crew as we finish up the 100 yard driveway. I'm not real comfortable with the concrete so far and hopefully we can get it figured out before the temperatures start to rise. This was a roller coaster of a day emotionally as I thought things were all good with the city until I found out they were not! ENJOY

I would be happy to provide references of other commercial projects that I obtained approval on as the applicant. Hope to hear from you soon if not best of luck on your journey. Working with the city and following up can be time consuming and exhausting, particularly when things get difficult. Hope you keep with it as it can be an amazing opportunity for you, your team, and your family.

I have worked in construction for commercial jobs like your building for 9 years, dealing with cities, towns, and everyone in between and I have figured out that if everyone put their ego away it would make every job so much smoother, quicker, and more enjoyable to work on. I am so glad I live in a city that is pro-growth. We even get weekly updates on the news about where building permits are total project sizes, etc. Updates from the city on big projects being planned. Long term road maps, etc. I'm sure there is still politics going on, always is. But at least the city's primary goal is not to shut down all development like some cities.

Now thousands of gallons of water are coming out of 6 or 10 4" or 8" down spout pipes. Its gotta go somewhere. Thousand of gallons of water can't just gush out of a pipe in one area. Its gotta get spread out evenly into the environment so bugs and trees and grass can use it :)

Having started my career as an Electrical Engineer at an independent governmental agency before transitioning to the private sector, I can throw in my two cents.
As Ryan mentioned, it's essentially an Engineer vs Engineer dispute. The city engineer likely aims to cover all bases for liability concerns, given that their stamp goes on the final as-builts and they must comply with regulatory oversight. Conversely, the engineer from the design firm Ryan hired likely juggles multiple small projects and prioritizes completing them to meet certain expectations.
Typically, engineering firms are the ones chasing the money as the company's job security hinges on project completion. In the end you have two organizations with conflicting agendas which results in the customer, Ryan, being the one who gets burnt.

That's the problem with starting a big business and working for someone else one of them will have to go if you only do small one day jobs you can work for someone else but it's impossible to work two full time jobs at the same time you will burn yourself out and start cutting corners and giving yourself a bad reputation

You should have a pocket thermometer and get in the habit of checking temp on every load. You'll be surprised in what you see somedays...... I've had 10-20 degree differences in loads which is huge for concrete with set times and water demand.

I used to be a mason tender and i know mortar is diffrent from concrete. When we used to mix in the winter and early spring we would use warm water and it would make it set faster. Maybe thats what they are doing and why it sets up quicker. Im probably wrong lol but maybe a theory.
