  • You may find a phone charger lying around, and not realize that it's actually a nefarious computer itself.
I just got back from DefCon where I explored all kinds of hacking tools that are disguised as everyday items you might regularly use.

There's an old lecture of a guy saying if you want to protect yourself [from hackers] disconnect your internet, turn off your computer, unplug all electronics, and throw it all away. Then you'll be safe.

A few years ago at one of my old jobs I remember asking my colleagues out of the blue, "What would you do if you found a USB drive on the footpath out the front of the building?" Most responded with something along the lines of, "I'd plug it in and see whats on it!!" and failed to understand, even after I explained why that was the wrong answer. *sigh*

Excellent advice. I remember finding a random usb after a lunch rush at my old job many years ago and immediately some coworkers wanted to plug it into the office computer in the back to see what was on it. I knew better because I was binging Mr. Robot at the time and snuck it away from them and destroyed it. It wasn't like your typical usb flash you buy at Office Depot or Walmart and also who just forgets your flash drive at a restaurant??

    All excellent advice.
On laptops I generally recommend turning USB off. On many laptops you can do that in BIOS, but if not, you may be able to do that in Windows if you use that. Be very careful though, some laptops run the touchpad as a "USB device". Don't bother with physical USB port locks, those are trivial to remove. I should send some to the Lockpicking Lawyer...
For smartphones, don't ever plug into a USB charging port anywhere. Bring your own charge brick along with the cord and plug into a regular outlet.
Never use flash drives, unless you categorically know what you're doing.

I also looked at my Windoes 10 PC and I don't see a "connect to open networks" option either - I think they did away with those, but I certainly could be wrong.

i think one plausible reason why there were wifi devices outside the u.s. channels at defcon is because the attendees are international. attendees from other countries would likely be running their own devices made for other regions. so, all channels would then be scanned by whomever wants to sniff all the bands.

I stop use that for I have an unlimited data plan on my phone and have no need for WiFi so often, it is only when I turn it on it look for my WiFi if the GPS see that I am close to it.

Seems to me that the wifi password should stop auto connects if the client side software is correctly written. A spoofed AP is not going to know what password the original AP would have been using nor is the device going to know what the password on the spoofed AP is going to be, so the spoofer would have to use no encryption. This would be an easy task for the device to say "Hey, you're supposed to be encrypted, this is sketchy, bye". Why on earth would any device have such a massive security flaw like that?
