  • A VERY important part to a brake job on your trailer is to burnish those brakes in. When you put new brakes on your trailer, this step is a MUST!

    @TheTrailerSmith YOU ARE WEARING ME OUT! I have spent my ENTIRE Sunday, jackin with my boat trailer surge brakes since they don't brake for squat! Inspected, repacked the bearing, adjusted with a bent butter knife because I didn't have a brake "spoon". Decided to flush the fluid that was darrrrk. Unclogged a bleeder valve. Sat out there baking in the sun squeezing on that hand bleeder vacuum 5 million pumps... AND I STILL got air from I don't know where AND I wasn't ever able to pull enough fluid the flush the master. All your educating is killing me smalls! LOL

    The factory RV industry never adjusts brakes. These trailers are towed hundreds of miles from Indiana not knowing if they get broke in properly.

    Happy Father's Day Mate!! So yeah, great vid on burnish your brakes. Not long ago I bought a new dump trailer thinking all is well, but willy-nilly I came close to swishing a stoplight with zero help from the trailer brakes. Right, no one bothered to mention the brakes were fresh off the shelf. New undies for me yeah. lmao

    What about a dual axle trailer where you only replace brakes on 1 axle. Now you've got #10 going to new shoes & old. I'm not sure how much heat will be created once the old brakes lock up.

    Thanks again. When I do this, at first when brakes are cold I feel a good tug, and after a number of activations the brakes start warming up until eventually they will lock. So I learned an important lesson on locking brakes. Seems though when you really need them brakes could be cold and not stopping as well…. Thanks for the info!!

      Are you saying to use the brakes to warm them up in the event you need to brake hard (like for a toll booth or accident ahead)?

      I was referring to the burnishing or adjustment of my brakes by lots of activations. With that, I also try to pump my brakes if I can during normal towing. @TheTrailerSmith please weight in here

    I have a 04 ford f250 4x4 at the trailer plug at the truck brake wire shows negative 10.5 but have no trailer brakes by pedal or hand control, same trailer on a 16 Chevy 1 ton works just fine, am I missing something between the 2 trucks, I can hear the brake pulse, and brakes are light drag at each wheel, but on the ford I can’t get the brakes to fully function for some reason need some help please

    I am about to receive a custom-ordered cargo trailer that’s being driven from your neck of the woods to Austin. Is there harm in doing the burnishing process (AFTER I check the lug nuts!)? I won’t have a clue on whether the brakes were burnished but for sure they won’t have been adjusted. Just wondering if there’s any risk to RE-burnishing them after it’s been driven a few hundreds of miles to get to me.

    As always, great video, 1 quick question, doesn't starting at 10 on the controller seem a bit much? when you're cruising at 25 mph and you engage the brake controller to full, should that trailer significantly slow or even stop the tow vehicle? It seems like at a 10 it would just lock up the trailer brakes, thanks for any advice you can offer on how much 'force' should be applied during furnishing, thanks

      He is describing NEW BRAKES where the shoes have not yet conformed to the shape of the drum. After several "10" he describes going lower, like to 5. Think of it like knocking off the high points on the shoes. Eventually the shoes will take the shape of the drum, and you feel the brakes much stronger than when you started with fresh parts out of the box. That is why he also describes in previous brake video why new brakes on a new trailer may barely work.

      Setting the controller at 10 is ONLY for the process of burnishing the brakes-for NEW brakes. You are not looking to significantly slow the tow vehicle, just feeling for the brakes to “grab” a bit and doing that several times. When you’re cruising at 25, before you engage the brake controller, you are to let off the accelerator to so as not create a significantly forceful situation.

    Manual Adjust brakes on that trailer that failed due to neglect. Do you think he would have been better off neglecting automatically adjusting brakes? I can see the spring under the adjuster, and lack of cable for auto-adjust so that is definitely a manual adjust brake that failed.

      @@TheTrailerSmith , well I enjoy your videos. I do have a question, I have car trailers and an enclosed trailer. What brand tires do you recommend?
      Some people hate the “China bombs”, say to buy Goodyear Endurance, some swear by Michelin LT tires for their trailers. So what do you have the best luck with? Thanks, Tom

      its either still getting 12 volts to it or the magnet itself is getting caught/stuck in a groove in the drum.

      @warrenmichael918 when I tow the trailer and press on the brake it stop normally but when releasing the brake magnet seem to not releasing until I start accelerate then it release do you know the problem

      @@TriNguyen-qq5ul Hard to say, id start with pulling a wheel off and checking to make sure it is all moving and working right. Could be something dirty or loose , allowing it to hang up.

    Why don’t repair shops and new trailer manufacturers/dealers burnish the brakes as part of the repair/manufacturing process? Many new cars no longer require a break in procedure for the engine.

      liability mainly i bet. They dont want to be dragging customers trailer around on the roads and have any damage from other idiots on the road. Also, they would be taking away future business from themselves because they know many people dont do it right and they will return sooner!

      @@martinparmer Cars don't have drum brakes anymore. Burnishing DRUM BRAKE PADS to the shape of the drum is completely different concept than disc brake pads.
