If you have purchased a new NAS Drive in the last few months, then chances are that you would use it to the best if its abilities increasing the memory to the maximum in order to run more apps and allow more users to access the device at any time. The latest 2020 Generation of Synology NAS (the DS920+, DS420+, DS720+ and DS220+), much like the older gen devices, all arrive with the ability to upgrade the memory to 8GB, but some users like to push this limitation, using unofficial memory from brands like crucial or Kingston, installing bigger and faster memory. Generally speaking, Synology NAS has a long-standing reputation for being underpowered when compared to brands like QNAP and Asustor, at least out of the box, choosing to focus on their award-winning DSM software. This is changing a bit in 2019/2020 with the newer Synology drives featuring improved hardware choices, but still, for many, it seems a little underwhelming. One potential benefit that’s highlighted to improve performance considerably multiple users is to upgrade the RAM (Random Access Memory) in the Synology NAS drive. Today’s post will cover my thoughts on the usefulness of upgrading the factory-installed RAM, how to determine if a RAM upgrade is needed at all and exactly how to do this. Let’s start with the latter, do you need to upgrade RAM?

Thanks to your video I've ordered a DS220+ with a Crucial CT16G4SFD8266 SODIMM which arrived today. After the first initial startup and installing DSM, temporary on an old 128GB SATA SSD which was lying around here, everything was looking good. Then I've inserted the 16GB SODIMM which was immediately recognized. Now the Resource Monitor shows 18GB RAM.
I'm currently performing a memory test via Synology Assistant. If everything is going well, I'll shuck my two WD Elements 12TB external disks from their housing if the extended tests completed successfully tomorrow. The two WD Elements 12TB housings contain a WD120EDBZ 12TB disk I have purchased with a nice discount. Thanks for this very informative video!

I did upgrade my DS216+II with a 4GB Hynix DDR3L SODIMM and it did work WONDERFULLY, a LOT more responsive than with the 1GB it came with, apps open quickly and I never got any issue during the warranty time and after. I know I ruined the warranty as first, I needed to break a aluminum seal in the DS216+II and second, I once requested help from synology during warranty period and they would not provide any help when they saw I was running 4GB of RAM. It was a 349$ guess that in my case, paid off just for the awesome difference in performance and responsiveness of the 216+II. Still to this day, absolutely no issue, works as fast as when it was new.

The DS1817 officially supports 8gb or ram. I’ve been using 16gb I got out of an iMac in my box since deploying the unit about 2 years ago and have never even had so much as a hint of an issue.

You sure know your stuff about NAS units. Saved me worlds of research and headaches when looking into getting my first NAS (Synology 2419+, which will arrive soon). I generally know my way around computers and the like, but when it comes to NAS, I still have much to learn. One question I did have was, do these units come with any type of reset button? I know when I've mucked around with my router settings too much, there's a "save me" button (reset) on the back. Watching the issues this unit is having made me ask myself, and now you, is there any recourse for trying to get rid of those weird graphical issues? Thanks for all the wonderful information and being brave enough to boldly go where no one should go anymore.

So short answer - 16GB RAM upgrade MAX, 1GB per chip on the DIMM. (Get a dual sided 8 chips per side DIMM - DDR4 2666)
    32GB RAM (2GB per chip) won't POST.

About your advice "MAKE SURE to check that the memory module (especially 16 and 32GB SODIMM modules) are DUAL RANK or ‘DR‘", since most 4GB/8GB memory modules are available only in SR, do they have trouble with DS220+/920+ series? BTW, I watch your channel often and very much appreciate your work!

With regards to the lines being stuck in the memory resource monitoring screen, I have that as well with the original config of the 220+. I tested it with another browser, because by default I use Brave (Chrome) which had the vertical lines in the graph. Using Firefox, there was no way I could reproduce that. That would lead to the conclusion that the lines are browser specific, or the way the browser interprets the front-end, and not due to the use of unofficial memory..

Seen both video's and they are spot-on for me. But I miss the part where you use the official memory and look at the activity monitor glitches. I want to install Virtual Machine with CentOS7 to be able to run FileMaker Server 19 on the DS220+, FM Server recommends 8GB of Ram, in a test (on a Dell Optiplex 745 with 2GB Ram) it will run reasonable, but would like to come closer. Running Virtual Machine will also take some resources I guess.

I just ordered a DS220+, my first NAS ever and I'm very excited for it. What I'm still trying to understand is, how crucial are RAM and caching in a NAS for home use, mostly used by 1 - 2 users? This model does not support SSD expansions for cache, does it mean it doesn't have cache at all or that it's limited to the internal one? Does it make a big difference to have cache in a NAS?
I'd also like to upgrade the RAM from the standard 2GB to 6GB, the max it officially supports. Since the expansion module is like over $100, how worth is it in the case I described?
Btw your channel contributed a lot in my final decision to get this NAS!

I think if synology thinks it's a good thing to disable the device with non-OEM RAM they will lose the marketshare. OwnCloud and NextCloud and FreeNAS will eventually clean their clocks. The DSM package is nice but not the only one.

Have you done a teardown, Some NAS makers will have a 2nd memory slot rather than having the DRAM soldered to the motherboard?
One issue that you may be having is issues with memory ranks, e.g., if the memory controller only supports 2 ranks per channel, then if the NAS is using a single channel config and the internal memory stick is a single rank 2GB module, and you install a separate dual rank memory module, then you will have memory instability.
Another issue is that you cannot manually adjust memory timings and voltages, and thus any memory you install will have to be stable at the voltage and timings of the internal memory stick. Thus if it is a 1.2V kit 2GB kit preinstalled, and you install a kit that needs 1.35V then it will be unstable.
The NAS will also not read XMP profiles Overall for complete stability, anything that will run at the base jdec spec at the will be fine as long as it does not run into memory rank issues.

    • @leexgx
      @leexgx 4 года назад

Yep the internal ram is behind the plastic cover but on this Synology you have to dismantle it to get to the 2gb stick (it's not soldered on)
on the older Synologys ddr3 versions there was no plastic cover both slots was visible and easy to change both once you removed the hdd caddy's (seems like if it can take a 16gb module so it should take 2x16gb if it booted with 2+16gb setup)
32gb dimms are not generally compatible with a lot of systems,, even some modern laptops have a tendency of been picky with 32gb dimms and most ram controllers only play nice with 2x16gb overall (generally ddr3 older ones are super picky or flat out don't work usually, ddr4 should be able to take 2x32gb but may it's bit more hit or less miss with ddr4 as ddr4 ram controllers officially support 2x32gb but depends if the bios does or not)

I did a lot of looking around myself and decided to go with the 418play (2-core Intel processor) with Ironwolf drives (unlike WD Reds, all ironwolves are CMR). I was fortunate enough (due to amazon fucking up my order) to get a 918+ (4-core Intel processor) for only a little more and I'm fairly content with it. I've got a minecraft server (accessible from the Internet) on it as well as a bunch of music and movies. I've only had it a few days, though, so maybe everything dies later, but for now, it's fine.
