Cool trick.. I didnt see the cabinet, but you should have sold the customer a cleanout and then snaked it through that. Would save you time and make a little more $. Plus you wouldn't have a bent cable

There are a few reasons, you could potentially blow out the bottom of the P trap, it makes it harder when pulling the snake back if its got debris on the tip, the cable could bind up and whip around causing damage to the sink and fixtures. Those are the few I can think of off the top of my head.
I have a basement drain from between my furnace and water heater that runs over to the sump well, about 8 feet away.I used a 25 foot Cobra Tools 1/4 inch snake and it kept getting stuck, making it difficult to pull out. Will this Bauer drill snake work better? The drain has the line from my furnace dehumidifier emptying into it. The drain is cast iron drain installed in 1986 when the house was built. IT has a square plug screwed in just next to it. Does the drain snake go down where the plug is or down the drain itself? Is the 1/4 inch snake heavy enough? Or should I replace it with something stronger?
I think your Cobra might be better than this Bauer, you might be better off trying a Spartan cable in that Cobra machine before buying this Bauer I think you can get a Spartan cable for about the same price as this Bauer and spartan cables are just the top of the line cable in drain cleaning. They are made with Zinc so they dont rust and they are much much more rigid than any other companies cables. I just cleared a kitchen sink stoppage in a 1 1/2 cast iron system using my Spartan Model 81 and my 1/4" cable. If youve got the money though I would suggest looking into the new Ridgid flex shaft the K9 102 would be perfect for what you are describing and you can actually completely clean the inside of the drain and bring it back to almost like new. Subscribe to the channel Im actually editing videos on these machines and cables right now so theyll be dropping in the next couple days. Thanks for the comment! always glad to give my advice.
I think I'll call a local company that does this kind of work and let them take care of it. I'd hate to buy this Harbor Freight device and have the cable snap off or break inside the drain just adding to my problem. I did some research and a 3/8 to 1/2 inch cable is recommended for floor drains. THe Harbor Freight tool is only 1/4 inch.
@@vaapilot yes I think your best bet is definitely call a plumber, sorry you are having a hard time bro I misunderstood your original post I thought you said you’d been clearing this drain with your 1/4” cobra and now you can’t get it through, I assumed maybe you just needed a more ridged cable like a Spartan, I’m not too familiar with basement floor drains or what size they are. Sorry for giving you the wrong information. Also a ridgid flex shaft would be a great machine for this application look into them. Might be a good idea to own one if you’ve got older drain lines in your home.
@@PlumbingExplained Thanks for the reply. My house was built in the spring of 1986, so it's almost 35 years old. The basement drain I am talking about has a cleanout plug next to it, that uses a square ended wrench device to remove it ( same kind of drain in my garage) but as far as I know, it has never been removed. Which leads me to this question, would I put the snake down the cleanout plug, or down the main drain hole? ( If I so decided to try and snake it again?) Being this drain is almost 35 years old ( and never clogged up before) I don't know if a cleanout drain wrench would work on it, considering that it may be rusted shut in place? My garage drain is also clogged up, and I assume goes to the drain line behind the garage -30 to 35 feet away that feeds into the septic drain field or the septic tank. I am the second owner of my home. Been here 31 years. The garage drain most likely is clogged from snow and sand runoff from my cars over the years. The basement drain cover metal plug was heavily rusted, so I put it in a bucket and put some water and some "rust out" in with it.Maybe clean it up and paint it with with rust proof Rustoleum to prevent further damage? What do you think?
I kinda like something that sits on or in the cabinet. I’m a plumber, but I don’t do a lot of service work and the few times that I’ve used one of those things that you hook to the end of your drill, it was cumbersome a you know what. I do like the mess out of that auto feed system on this thing though. I might get one.
Trying to snake my shower drain but seems to keep going up the vent instead of the drain line with this machine. What do I do I’ve been at it for a couple hours can’t get it unclogged.
Sorry for such a late response bro.... Typically i recommend trying to run it very slowly in reverse while feeding the cable out if you keep going up the vent, running it in reverse sometimes will help it make the drop or atleast possibly knock something loose so you can make the drop.. Run it in reverse and put pressure on the cable back toward you slightly.
That literally makes no sense, how would you have ten traps off in the time I dropped the cable down this pop up missing the plunger ? this is the first and only time I’ve ever gone down through the pop up, lots of guys do it this way and I was only doing it this way because its what harbor freight asked me to do.
I have a laundry machine with a sink next to it. The laundry machine backs up into the sink. I tried using a 10 foot manual snake. And nothing happens to the water. It goes down gradually slow. If I get this and use your technique do you think it would do the job ? What's coming up is like a black sludge and dirt.
yankeemoe i have cleared several laundry lines with this machine it’s perfect for that type of light duty drain cleaning. The manual ones just don’t spin fast enough and aren’t rigid enough half the time you shoot down the drain and it turns around and comes right back at you this machine is perfect for you 👍

@yankeemoe you might think about getting a buildup remover. I had a similar problem and after using a rented auto feed auger from Home Depot which was 70 bucks and until 8/31/19 this Bauer auto feed auger from Harbor Freight is only 99.99 plus tax. I use Green Gobbler from Amazon I get 25 lb bucket of powder for 60 bucks. When I am done with the laundry I dump a scoop down the laundry sink and I put a dissolved scoop down the washing machines waste line. 1 year and no more backups.
No info here about pipe diameters . I see this comes with a 1/4" cable, which I read elsewhere is for use on pipe from 1" up to 2". I need 1/4' to make some tight turns in cast iron fittings for 2" pipe. I also need to clean long settled crud and probably rust inside a 2" x 20 ft straight drain pipe/clean out. I think it's seriously gunked up and hard packed. I don't think this could work for the 2" pipe. I am interested in tips from experienced users. I wonder if I could buy an additional cable, like maybe a 3/8 diameter and switch them out as needed.
@@PlumbingExplained have you tried the Ryobi 18V cordless I'm wondering if the cable is replaceable I think that's the one I'm going to get since I can get the company to pick up the tab for it
Yes you can. The device is able to be opened up and the cable is removeable. Some other reviewers have mentioned about changing the cable to a much better one.
Loved the video. Question for you, when you have the snake in the forward feed position, do you lock the chuck, or do you leave it unlocked? Thanks again for the video.
Which cable are you referring to? The stock cable or the cable I recommend replacing it with? With the stock cable yes there is a part at the end of the cable that will stop the cable from running all the way out but not with the cable i recommend replacing the stock cable with. The replacement cable I recommend does not have anything to stop it at the end so i recommend once youve got it installed putting an L shape bend at the very end to stop it from feeding out of the machine Hope this helps have a great day!
I just purchased one of these from Northern Tool which is a competitor to HarborFreight. Mine is from a brand called Ironton but it is almost identical to the Bauer. I made some progress on unclogging my main that runs to my septic tank about 30 feet away. I pulled multiple large clumps of dog hair out of the drain. But i still think the drain could be draining faster, got any advice for that? Other than purchasing a 50ft auger :D Great video. Thanks!
Really sorry i missed your comment man but I couldnt really give you any other advice than buying a larger machine or calling somebody out who has one.
@@PlumbingExplained thanks so much I live in an apartment building that has drains prone to clogging and we have to tip the super every time so I figured I should get one and it will pay itself. My other question are the auger tips universal if I buy other sizes?
Well Chris, I'm a second generation plumber in South Alabama. :) But I don't clean drains. Still might get this... I like that you showed a double fixture fitting in your diagram, but nobody uses those here. Just crosses. :(
I think Chris's make the best plumbers dont you ? I dont really clean drains anymore either in fact when I took this new job I negotiated that I would not be doing drain cleaning but you know sometimes you get that little old lady or the extremely nice customer who asks if there is anything you can do about their slow draining tub/bathroom sink thats where this bad boy comes in handy. That being said thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and leave a comment bro! Really means alot to me and motivates me to continue coming up with more ideas and videos to hopefully entertain guys like you and help Home owners and those with less knowledge on the trade fix their problems or at least understand why we charge what we do. Dude I will say this I was not paid in anyway to make this video I simply loved the tool so much I wanted to share my experience with other people because its one of the most common questions Im asked from my customers what snake they should get to unclog their showers/tubs and bathroom sinks. This snake right here is killer that doesnt mean its foolproof though I just loaned mine out to a friend who is in construction and it took him a few days to bring it back which got me worried and I was right.. he returned it with the cable completely fucked. The Autofeed feature which you know as a plumber can be either a really cool feature or something thats going to cause you ALOT of frustration and I think the deciding factor is experience. If you have experience clearing drains you can tell by the sound of the cable making its way down the drain or by the sound of the motor and you can often feel when you have torque building up and if the drain is filled with water you can potentially like I did in this video use the water as another tool to give you signs specially with a drill snake you should be very in tune and aware of these things somebody whose never snaked a drain before is not going to even know to look for any of these things It also takes a bit of common sense as you know. That being said if you have experience clearing drains specially drains like this then I would say I have yet to find a better 1/4" top snake with autofeed capability. Im going to do another video where I sit and explain and break down every little feature this little guy has because I barely scratched the surface in this video its really a badass piece of equipment and for the price as a professional in the field I can tell you right now you will not be disappointed. It checks all 3 box's for me Looks cool, Works great and is Quality built so I know its gonna last. Check back next week bro Im gonna have a video going more in depth on this machine Im gonna explain every little feature it has and then im gonna take it apart and show how to change the cable and clean it.
This was the only time I ever snaked a drain like this, I was being lazy to be honest, Id heard of other guys doing it like that and wanted to give it a try. Dont do it that way.
Greg Simpson not all drains are plumbed perfectly some times guys put fittings backwards or just fittings that should not be used in certain areas and sometimes you have no choice believe me I been doing this a very long time and if you put a slight bend on the tip just to curve the cable so it can make certain bends or drop down an area otherwise it would have just run right across. Luckily sounds like your drain was plumbed properly but I would say maybe 30-40 percent of the time they are not
I would just like to add an experienced plumber knows most lav sinks are just hair clogs, you don’t poke holes in hair the drop head grabs it! Subscribe and watch some of my other drain cleaning vids you may learn something valuable!
Nice video! I bought one today and unclogged 2 drains after my old $40 ridgid powerspin plus broke from the drill attachment stud. The ridgid was a cheap POS compared to this badboy.
Daniel Lopez thanks bro! I totally agree this snake shits all over the rigid this thing is awesome I’m really impressed with it ! Thanks for watching the video bro I really appreciate it and I’m gonna keep dropping videos to hopefully help aid people in making the right decision in what products to buy related to plumbing !
The cables are definitely trash that’s why I recommend putting a different brand cable in, the inside of the machine isn’t built to last it’s basically a throw away, once a year buy a new one. It’s cheap enough
I bought this. I was hoping you would explain operation. Some things you should not do according to the manual. Nothing was explained. Missed a good opportunity to educate.
Sorry Lass and I know this is a late reply but could you do me a favor and give me an idea of some questions you had and then I can make a video addressing maybe some common questions folks like you have.

that is one heck of a Chick Magnet. I'm getting one and taking it to the clubs.
Worked for me! I’m married with two kids now!
Cool trick.. I didnt see the cabinet, but you should have sold the customer a cleanout and then snaked it through that. Would save you time and make a little more $. Plus you wouldn't have a bent cable
Yea i gotta sell more cleanouts man good tip thank you!
@@PlumbingExplained
For sure, i had the same exact reaction when i saw that bad boy at harbor freight. Then I saw the battery powered one which was cheaper if you already had batteries. I've pretty much just used the super vee on old company work rig, but for 120 bucks? Goddamn. Im curious if the HF is rebranded and is same tool as one from Amazon for 75 bucks. Looks identical besides color. Have you, or anybody you known used the one im thinkin of? I've wanted to do exactly what your doing with the youtube. Ill subscribe and maybe throw some video ideas your way

WA state studor venter extraordinaire
Kevin Baker I have another subscriber who bought that one it’s the same exact snake just different branding if I’m not mistaken
Why is it bad to shoot down a pop up if I remove the pop up first? Honest question if that sounded smart sorry lol
There are a few reasons, you could potentially blow out the bottom of the P trap, it makes it harder when pulling the snake back if its got debris on the tip, the cable could bind up and whip around causing damage to the sink and fixtures. Those are the few I can think of off the top of my head.
@@PlumbingExplained thanks
@@PlumbingExplained The Cobra I have fell apart, the stub where the drill attaches broke inside, so it's junk!
My favorite is the Spartan Model 81, I run it with a 1/4" drum for tubs, showers and lav drains and 5/16 drum for Kitchen and some toilet drains.
Thank you I feel safe buying one at Harbor Freight
Trying to snake my shower drain but seems to keep going up the vent instead of the drain line with this machine. What do I do I’ve been at it for a couple hours can’t get it unclogged.
Sorry for such a late response bro.... Typically i recommend trying to run it very slowly in reverse while feeding the cable out if you keep going up the vent, running it in reverse sometimes will help it make the drop or atleast possibly knock something loose so you can make the drop.. Run it in reverse and put pressure on the cable back toward you slightly.
What do you charge for a unclog like the one in this video ? Or other plumbers how much do you charge ?
This is anywhere from $60-$100 typically for most plumbing companies.
@@PlumbingExplained Thanks man I’m definitely adding this to my arsenal
never seen someone go down the sink drain by the time you do that you could have had ten traps on and off even on an old building
The manual ones just don’t spin fast enough and aren’t rigid enough half the time you shoot down the drain and it turns around and comes right back at you this machine is perfect for you 👍
@@PlumbingExplained I appreciate it man. Thank you so much. I'm going to give it a try.

You’re better off getting a flex shaft, the k9-12 does up to 25ft
Great video thank you 😊. I had one for a year and it's excellent. Everything you said is true
have you tried switching out the cable with a drop heAD
Yes i bought a general cable worked great!b
@@PlumbingExplained have you tried the Ryobi 18V cordless I'm wondering if the cable is replaceable I think that's the one I'm going to get since I can get the company to pick up the tab for it
Can you replace the snake itself on the machine
Yes you can. The device is able to be opened up and the cable is removeable. Some other reviewers have mentioned about changing the cable to a much better one.
Loved the video. Question for you, when you have the snake in the forward feed position, do you lock the chuck, or do you leave it unlocked? Thanks again for the video.
Would this work for a washer drain backing up? If not do you have any recommended solutions?
Yes this should work well for your washing machine backing up that’s a great application for this little snake!
is there a stopper at the 23-foot mark or will the cable come out if you keep on advancing it?
Other than purchasing a 50ft auger :D
Great video. Thanks!
Really sorry i missed your comment man but I couldnt really give you any other advice than buying a larger machine or calling somebody out who has one.
Is this better than the ryobi?
I think this one is better than the Ryobi yes
@@PlumbingExplained thanks so much I live in an apartment building that has drains prone to clogging and we have to tip the super every time so I figured I should get one and it will pay itself. My other question are the auger tips universal if I buy other sizes?
What about the Super Vee? Isn't that the defacto king of small drain cleaners?
The Spartan model 81 is the best small drain machine but Spartan as a company has turned to total dog shit
@@PlumbingExplained Ah yeah maybe so, but I way prefer the gun style machines. And the spartan price is incredibly stupid.
Can this be used on a clean out pipe on septic system???
Well Chris, I'm a second generation plumber in South Alabama. :)
But I don't clean drains.

@@ChrisGilliamOffGrid Im going to kick the ball around with my son when I get back Im gonna give it a watch!
Does it have reverse (Shelly)
How come ya didn't remove the water from trap. with wet vac then snake from bottom of drain.its easier more work but easier
This was the only time I ever snaked a drain like this, I was being lazy to be honest, Id heard of other guys doing it like that and wanted to give it a try. Dont do it that way.
You need to kink the tip of that cable..... the knob on the tip needs to be bent over to a 45 degree angle to make the corners
That definitely helps bro good advice!
I would NOT kink the end. It's a 1/4" cable and that will weaken the cable. I left my straight and it went through 5 to 6 bends in just 7 feet.
Luckily sounds like your drain was plumbed properly but I would say maybe 30-40 percent of the time they are not
Never left a comment before. That was a great video. I just bought one. I’m glad I watched this before I took mine out of box. Thanks!
An experienced plumber would have taken the time to drop the p-trap, and not be a hole-poker. You have shown that you are a good hole-poker !
I’m great at poking holes ask my wife! This was just a demonstration on this snake I’m very thorough thanks for the comment!
I would just like to add an experienced plumber knows most lav sinks are just hair clogs, you don’t poke holes in hair the drop head grabs it! Subscribe and watch some of my other drain cleaning vids you may learn something valuable!
It’s a lavy bro not a lateral 😂
general pipe cleaners hand snake. The best
Nice video! I bought one today and unclogged 2 drains after my old $40 ridgid powerspin plus broke from the drill attachment stud. The ridgid was a cheap POS compared to this badboy.

Outstanding
Durability is the problem
Looks great on the outside. Inside is junk. I bought one today and the line broke.
The cables are definitely trash that’s why I recommend putting a different brand cable in, the inside of the machine isn’t built to last it’s basically a throw away, once a year buy a new one. It’s cheap enough
Did you get a background check before buying that snake
Haha thankfully not!
We'd be FIRED rodding without removing the trap whoa!
Yea as i stated in the video its not something I do often this was actually the first time id ever done that and i dont recommend doing it however if you have a solid brass trap you are snaking through I dont think its a big deal but I cant fire myself bud :) Thanks for your comment.
@@PlumbingExplained I'm just saying if we are open for comment (State Plumber Illinois here 🤫) I stopped turd rodding almost 10 ago, it's all high-rise lay-out now. I'm just saying in any "instructional vid" you may have the inexperienced watching this, rodding a brass trap punching a hole thru it, and taking like forever to hit the compacted area like you did because of too many direction changes of that rod that's all friend.
