  • While ventifacts display reshaping and sculpting features caused by the wind, these rocks appear to be still in their original shape, yet slightly rounded and with a glassy high polish. They come from a very small area between two hills that measures maybe 100 feet across. Calcium deposits on some of the rocks imply that they may have been buried in soil at least for a time. We know that as climate changes, soil deposits and erodes on any given area differently. These rocks are truly a mystery in many ways. On the nearby flat plain, beautiful ventifacts can be found - many of which now are buried in soil and grass. Again: slight swings in the climate and winds seem to be at play.

When I reidid the patio last year and pulled up the granite slabs that had been there for 14 years, the slabs already had the same material crusted on the bottoms. Same with rocks that are in the dirt. So I think things don't have to be buried deep or long for that to happen. In this area of Wyoming, as I put in the description, these swings between deposition/erosion seem to happen frequently enough.
