So, thought I would add a little story from my childhood.
One summer during a Cub Scout camping trip we had a World War ONE marine veteran come out. And he Talked about how every time since the war he went camping the only thing he took to cook, eat, and drink with was a 20oz soup ladle he stole from the Cooks during the War and a piece of steel he had forged into a spork on one end , a knife on the other end and welded a bottle opener and can piercer onto the handle. He then showed us how to cook all sorts of things in the ladle, brew coffee or tea in it, boil and cool drinking water, roast meats using the handle as a spit and even transfer a coal from one fire and walk a long distance (mile or more) keeping that coal alive and hot enough to start a fresh fire elsewhere. He claimed in his youth he could swim a coal across a lake and start a roaring fire on the other bank before he ever felt a chill
To this day whenever I go back packing I use a ladle in the same way he did to cook my micro meals and teach kids how to cook with a ladle.
Thought you would enjoy the secondhand story of a Marine’s Experience in the FIRST World War
Cool story, bro. Just shows what you can do with minimal gear and a little ingenuity. 👍☺
Make a video, pass it on.
Post it!
Phenomenal story. All us older vets(I'm 52) should share our knowledge and encourage youth to experience the wild.
You never know when you may be forced into a survival scenario. I take short trips and long trips in all conditions. As a general rule, I have a 6 month minimum survival plan in place with gear and then raw survival after as needed.
No matter how good you are: always be open to the ideas of others. I was Infantry, "Follow Me" but sometimes another may be the squad leader.
The one "comfort" item I've always carried and rarely see is a simple 12" x 16" piece of plastic tarp with a grommet in each corner. I use this ALL the time just to have a clean workplace. Whether it be to lay out my first aid kit while treating a wound or as my kitchen table to sit food and utensils on to keep them out of the mud this little rectangle of "clean space" is wonderful. The grommets give me a way to fold over the edges and secure them but they also serve as stake points in a strong wind or to hang it up to dry. It rolls up secured by a small piece of paracord and weighs next to nothing.
Good that you were able to harvest a "survival sirloin".
One does not simply harvest sirloin. I am impressed.
I always keep 10-12 survival sirloins on me at all times. You just never know.
That beef is so good looking
Brian Landers So, everyone who serves needs to prove themselves to you? How about you go troll somewhere else.
@@tom_olofsson thanks for getting there before me.
What sets your videos aside from others is this.
Your not gabby. Concise and to the point. Info is solid. And the products are tested.
Another "Over The Top" video! Im like a "Hawk" watching for these tips and tools videos that you put out! Keep'em comin! I have learned alot of valuable mind sets and skills watching you and the other path finder crew at work. Keep up the excellent work my friend.
Comfort items are 95 % moral booster , so ya if you're in a survival situation might as well be happy : )
Old school is cool.
No backround music is cool.
I dig your calm no drama approach, I subbed a month ago and enjoy watching all the older videos. Good to go.
A pack of playing cards. Regardless of how far you are from anywhere, if you play a game of soltaire, someone else will tap you on shoulder and tell you to put the 6 on the 7!
First of all, your videos are awesome. You give GOOD survival info (and as an outdoor educator, I can tell you, I appreciate it) and you give it to us straight. No nonsense. You talk about things, SHOW them, then usually demonstrate how to use them. This is the best way to teach almost anything. You are a true experiential educator and you are VERY GOOD at it. Obviously, you’ve been military trained. And some of us know that Upward Bound was started to train sailors to survive the rigors of shipwrecks, falling overboard, etc. how to not only PHYSICALLY survive otherwise perilous environs, but to mentally survive them. And, you do such a great job; you are my favorite survival expert. Well done!
i want to take this opportunity to thank you for helping me rehabilitate some misguided youths , we use you as inspiration to focus the attention and give a new appreciation for a self reliant mindset instead of an entitled one . we look forward to fridays when i get off my second job as bushcraft time . its like you are our scoutmaster and we are stewards of our needs . thank you so much , you are valued and appreciated . thank you for your service and for helping the youths that will inherit the world we all live in . much respect .
I was at a bushcraft gathering of about 150 people a couple of weeks ago and heard your name mentioned at least a dozen times in casual conversation. And no, it wasn't Wowak busting on you...😀 Anyway keep up the good work! People like what you are doing.
Great picks. Absolutely agree with the portable grill mesh. I ordered one like that but with collapsable 6" legs a while back, love it! much better than traveling with metal pans. Now they sell them in Walmart.
My next favorite comfort item for just camping is the REI Flexlite Air Chair, I got used. It's very small and light. Perfect for being lazy in during bad weather setups.
The biggest comfort item I saw in the video was that generously portioned rib eye cooked on an open flame. OUTSTANDING! Stuffed mushroom caps as a side. Not roughing it too much today? Of course that is brought to you by the cooking grate. That's right on time. I just started looking for a stainless cooking grate. Thanks for the video. Excellent as always.
I had the same thought; if that was always dinner, I wouldn't have as much a problem convincing my family to prep.
The chair idea is great. I have a bunch of scrap leather. I’m gonna make one of those.
Good to see that you do make room for optional items, especially for people new to this type of experience.
We all know that these will vary from one person's pack to another. It is important and in keeping with your attention to details that you point out that even the Corporal exercises options.
Well done again marine. I wouldn't expect less than the best from you. As always looking forward to your next video.
Your channel has had me hooked since day 1 of Level 4 lockdown in NZ. First weekend of Level 2 I'm foraging in surplus and camping stores looking at gear and practicing knots with grandchildren. Really appreciate the time it takes to put all these videos together- I'm not too fussed about metrics / imperial measurements cos that's what Aunty google is for!
Slip 3 or 4 knee-high nylons over the outer case of your Grayl, then slip them off and put one inside (wrapping over at the top) before dipping up water.
These pre-filter any particulates like bark, leaves, etc. and makes the Grayl's filter last longer. It also pads the Grayl eliminating the rattle if you carry your Grayl inside a Stanley Cook Pot.
Cool video, really like that stool idea!
Ahhh, yes, Confort, the 11th C...!
My comfort item is a $6.00 flea and tick collar. Put it around your boot. Lasts 7 to 8 months. Also helps against chiggers. You're welcome.
Just watched a few others top 5 comfort items. It’s cool to see each personality’s choice in what they call comfort items.
I can hear the DI voice in my head screaming, "What are you doing with that cover in "locked" position, Corporal Kelly?!?!?" 🤣 S/F
My #1 survival comfort item is a FLESHLIGHT.
Is that a comfort item or a necessity?
🤫😂😂
Good additions to your kit.
I like the water purifier bottle.
I carry a Sawyer mini and yes if the water is questionable, I will use it.
One thing I added to my bag is one of those hunting camo nets. I think 6x8.
I bought on the discount rack at the end of hunting season for 5 dollars.
Works great as a mosquito net.
Not having mosquitos buzzing my ear at night is a good thing.
Also if good for camoflaging the camp or yourself.
Never forget personal hygiene items.
Simple things like brushing your teeth, shaving, and a clean t shirt and a pair of socks can change your outlook on life.
I'm a survival newbie I guess you could say, and I have seen so many of you fellas whip out some meat and cook it while camping/bushcraft camping. What do you use to keep the meat at a safe holding temperature? I am a new subscriber to your channel Corporal. I find your videos very helpful and no nonsense. I find myself looking forward to your new videos as I occasionally have time to do a little binge watching. Thank you for what you are doing. I appreciate it and, I thank you also for your service.
Lisa
Definitely got a kick out of the Camp Crystal Lake shirt while making an "OVER THE TOP" reference! OUTSTANDING!! 😂🤣😂
Comfort items! Was just thinking of that this past week because I haven’t broken my first over night in the woods vCard and plan to do so this weekend. They say bring comfort items and it’s okay to overpack the first time. Felt weird about my msr guardian water filter because it wasn’t 10cs. I’m finding knee pads are my outdoors chair right now because I can plumbers vice wood better. I cook steak on the embers with curry powder/salt rub and omg is that m’mm good. I never know where to put my steak when it’s done other than a bandana which makes cutting a surgical job. But hey, I’m training even when it’s raining at least once a week.
Love all your videos! I really appreciate what you do, some things I know but you always make it better by reaffirming or having a new gadget that I didn’t know existed! I hope to see you “out there” 🙏🏻
I like that in your newer videos you’re showing your humor! Keep it up brother
I have to agree, it's always nice to have a few creature comforts wherever you are and they can be different for everyone. They not only can help keep your spirits up but can bring a calm to a stressful situation so that you can refocus and put your thoughts in order. Another excellent video.
I love the Grayl; I generally pre-filter with a handkerchief to extend the life of the filter. It also take out many chemicals, which boiling won't do (might get some sales in New Palestine. I think it's the perfect filter for E & E. I like the UCO dish set, but I prefer dishes I can also cook in; double the duty with half the equipment. I always enjoy your videos, Shawn, especially the makeshift shelters...and your meals. Keep up the great work.
Grayle Water Purifier.....I just bought one 2 months ago. I use it on my short hikes, and absolutely love it. Yes weight, but super simple "purified water" on the go (Orange filters). Sawyer aren't purifiers, the Grayle is. Another great Video Corporal !!!
Grayl grill knife canteen and steak are all the comfort I need and maybe a torch and emergency light good choices in your vids very rounded
0:39 love that Over The Top reference! 👍🏿
Cool points awarded for the Camp Crystal Lake shirt
comfort is necessary for proper psychology. Proper psychology is necessary for survival.
True. You could pack a bunch of snacks, jerky, dried food, etc etc. but having a hot meal is worth the extra effort and weight. It just does something for you mentally. It’s a huge morale boost
1. Just because you're back on the block, doesn't permit you to wear your cover backwards. 2. The only truck you should be driving is a Deuce and a half.3. I have the Expedition Research Grill that I sometimes pair with the Expedtion Research Titanium Stove. Thanks for sharing you, Mighty Awesome Devil Dog. RAH!!!
I am glad to see this is randomly popped up in my suggested feed. Maybe RUclips is starting to like Shawn again.
No need to be miserable, just because you're in the woods. Comfort can make so much of everything else easier to deal with.
I also carry a folding saw in my kits. Makes things a lot easier either the Bachco or the silky one or the other is in every kit that o have. Great comfort item.
This has been a legitimate great channel since day one. Thanks for not changing. Over the top lol
COMFORT, IS A SIGN WE ARE NOT YOUNG ANYMORE, YA I'M THERE. GOT EM ON MY LIST! THUMBS UP AF!
I love it when even your older videos pop up in my feed.
This one was cool 👍
All of these items are excellent choices. Last time I went camping, I brought a three legged portable chair. I’m so glad I brought it. It’s amazing how comfortable those chairs really are.
I like your puristic style to explain your used gear. As a former german "sergeant"
I can absolutely recommend to carry some "comfort items".
I’m liking the info. Your verbal communication is excellent . The equipment usage and proper procedure gives confidence to all, you make Survivability a chance for those who have had none ,keep up the good work soldier on.
Good gracious, I think you’re the only RUclips’r who actually ties lashes and knots correctly. As an Eagle Scout it drives me insane to see people half adding lashes and knots and subscribers taking in that kind of wrong information. Like dress that thing and do it correctly! Thank you for the informational and correct videos!
that's why I am not a top tuber. YT peddles BS. Thanks for watching
It ain't "old school" until I see that soul patch back, HAHA!!
I keep some rubber bands around my geopress to attach my bandana as a prefilter. Keep that filter clog free.
I have the entire stool. It clips to the right side of my camera caddy harness and I lie not when I say I can carry that thing around all day and not know it's there. I reach up with my left hand, pop the clip, slide it down my arm and over my hand, slip off the elastic that holds it closed, open it and sit on it. It's great for sitting quietly waiting for the birds to show.
I always enjoy your helpful info sir ! I am an adventure dirt bike rider / camper, I love watching bush craft / survivor channels like yours. Thank you for your service!
Peace Bro
Weird to see double c with a beard, looks like hes finally relaxed in his videos
That little light can help you find your cold camp at night by leaving it on in camp
Thanks for the short list..That stool seat looks awesome.. too bad its sold out.. well ill have to keep my eye on it.
Great video as always... comfort n convenience is always a beautiful thing... especially when you're getting up there in the years and still out there making it happen !
Thanks for sharing, great options , I like the camp stool , grill , I have a Grayl , never seen that lantern or the mess kit before, God bless !
I would like to second on the amazingness of the Grayl. I've used multiple other purifiers, pump filters, squeeze filters, etc, and the Grayl not only is rapidly fast, but extremely durable, the filters are cheap, and the size/weight is great for backpacking trips of all types.
Great video! Love the lantern! That's the best backpacking lantern I've seen yet.
Comfort items is just that, what makes you happy even the biggest primitive survival experts have thier comfort items that arent bushcrafty or tacticool. Which is why i like your ideas, Joshua enyart, dave Canterbury, Chad zuber, John Campbell Arizona bushman and Cody Lundin.
Like that camp stool, I have used a trimmed off piece of a foam camping pad to sit on, I was sitting on the ground, but not in the dirt and a little cleaner and not as cold. A lot of neat items, thanks.
People take comfort items for granted. They boost morale and good morale increases survivability.
Nice gear. I especially liked the stool, grill and filter. Thanks for the video Shawn and for doing the dirt time and research.
Winner takes it all. Nice reference, good flick. I really appreciate you going over things like the tripod lash that you've covered before because not everyone has been here from the get go.
If you consider the psychological benefit that a comfort items provide, it's almost as important as the 10 C's. As usual, outstanding presentation. Cheers from Winnipeg.
My husband and I watch you every Sunday together.
Dude long time follower, you are hilarious. I laughed so hard when you where educating us on what you like to do with the hat !!
Americans! You honorable people. I hope one day you will join us with the metric system.
Adamo Leoni We like to confuse foreigners.
@@hoppes9658 hahaha
Turning your hat backwards is a bit “Over The Top”. Love it.
Finally! these are the tips i'm looking for, RUclips is flooded with lists of every single thing everybody absolutely MUST HAVE in the pack...tell me what you REALLY want when all your other basic needs are already met.
Anytime you and canterbury post i have to watch. Keep up the good work
Old school Marcus Phoenix. Ty for sharing the video
I heard you mention the Sawyer mini. I've heard nothing but negative things about that. The overwhelming consensus is to use the full-size Sawyer on a smart water bottle. Super reliable, fast, safe, light, etc.
That was some serious Survivalist Sirloin! 🥰😎. NO ONE CAN ever say you are "All Hat And NO CATTLE!" 😂😎.
Ribeye
So much learnt from your videos.
Been reaserching water purifiers and this one escaped me, this looks like the perfect solution that I have been looking for.
Ordered one.
Sawyer squeeze for me, but I agree on the UCO lanter. I backpack w/ a hammock. Sweet little hanging light.
I'm also a Sawyer Squeeze fan, and I consider water purification to be one of the 10 essentials, not a comfort item. For me boiling is a back up, not a primary method. I agree, lantern looks good.
I like that Over The Top movie reference.
Camp Crystal Lake, lol, nice! Great gear reviews, man, thanks. That ribeye looks legitimate:)
I've had a Grayl since their kickstarter days. It works, it's simple and it's reliable. Does my heart good to see someone like yourself using it as well.
My favorite comfort item backpacking is a bar-b-que fork I bought at Walmart.for $1. I prop it up with a rock and angle it over a fire. I cook steak, pork country style ribs, pork belly, sausage, hot dogs, and spam with it. After eating, I stick the fork end in the fire to purify it.
Im no rocket surgeon but i would take that 12" grill and cut it in half so you had two 6" squares. ( or however even you can get them) Then take some 1/8" or 1/16" round steel stock ( something thin but resistant to high heat) Cut two of those too 5" and weave them between the holes on the edge too link the grate together when you wannaa use it.
Another cool informative vid…but entertaining as well! You’re channel really is the best in this category! I hope the YT knuckle heads recognize this!
More than just a little Over the Top there Cpl.
Tall folks can make long legs, short folks can make short legs. Stool is a great piece of kit.
Semper Fi
Over the top..... one of my favorite movies
Over the Top is one of my favorite movies. Well done!
Can you please cover the topic of hygiene? What items can be used in survival situation?
That big old steak was probably the best comfort item of all. You're making me hungry. Now I have to go get some steak.
Your channel is criminally underrated.
Agreed. Contact RUclips
Agreed. Increasingly becoming one of my favorite channels. Content is locked on...
I used to go hunting with a friend of mine. One morning, I noticed he put his toothbrush into a pocket on his vest before we headed out from camp, rather than leaving it in his pack by his bedroll. When I asked about that, he told me it was a psychological comfort item. The way he explained it, doing something that is really routine, like brushing your teeth, can help to clear your mind and calm you down in a stressful situation. Then, you can attack the problem with a clear head and move on. After that, I started carrying a Folger's single and an esbit stove for the same reason.
If you do 2 of those grills & connect then with like a 1” key ring... you can clamp a fish in between for easy grilling
Corporal, great video as always.
I have an idea for a video. Let’s see what the Corporal’s hypothetical INCH bag would look like. Call it an intellectual exercise.
go to the gray bearded green beret and ask him to a video on that. Thanks for watching
I get so hungry watching these videos ....awesome info Sir
I’ve had a drix for a while may have to head to your amazon and get a grayl soon.
The yellow and od green isn’t there??!!
Comfort isn’t a swear word, a few luxuries make the world of difference.
A chair instead of sitting on wet or cold ground, a cheap inflatable pillow so you don’t wake up with a sore neck.
Thanks for all your work, especially when it’s not getting passed on to your subs 👍
Camp crystal lake T-shirt!!! Lol love it!
Shawn I'm a fan of the UCO brand. Even though their stuff is budget priced , it's still good quality. I have several things from them and like them all.
That comment about feeling like a machine was Over The Top!
i see what you did there LOL
love the pouch for the grill, (nothing to stop you having a steak during a conflict), cheers buddy love watching your uploads!
Very informative video brother. Your channel is my go to for all things self reliance.
I like the tripod stool idea, but It looks loose. I would still use the figure 8 binding and tie it off, but dispense with the frapping. All you need to do is flip the central pole over to 270 degrees and it locks the binding tight. This even works with telegraph poles and rope, and we used it on tripods to remove UXO from deep holes in the ground, and for safely hoisting lookouts high up in a bosun’s chair!
