    The description of how basic GPS works is wrong. The GPS receiver in the plane doesn't know the current time, since that would require an expensive and delicate atomic clock installed in the receiver. Rather, the receiver subtracts the time received from two different satellites to determine the difference in distance. Given 4 satellites (and thus 6 different distance differences), the receiver can then solve a system of simultaneous equations to get the actual distance from each satellite, and then use the ephemeris data to calculate its position in space. GPS is used by other satellites to track their own position, but if GPS actually generated two possible positions and then discarded the one in space, that wouldn't be possible.
    Other than that, though, I thought this was a very informative and well-done video. Thanks.

    Great video! But there is an mistake based on my fly knowledge.when talking about NDB tracking .if the wind is coming from left when the NDB station is straight ahead .you should put a correct angle to left , and the needle will shows a right indication.

  • @BillPalmer
    @BillPalmer 3 года назад +5

    ERROR in narration: 3:58. Says “that means the NDB is at a relative bearing of 150 degrees”, It should have said “magnetic bearing”
    As the relative bearing was 120 and the MH was 030

      @@Rastapopoulos... If the wind correct has you pointing 20 degrees left of your track, as you fly over the station it will be 20 degrees to the right of the nose of the plane, so the needle would be pointing 20 degrees right of your heading.

    A local high-precision time is not kept on the GPS receiver. This would create a clock sync nightmare. Pseudo-ranging only requires relative acquired time and ephemeris.

    Very nice videos, as usual. Just one question... (refer to minute 5:00 of the video). Shouldn't the ADF needle be pointing to a relative bearing of (lets say) 020, as the airplane is compensating for the wind coming from the left, thus leaving the station slightly to the right of our heading? All best!
