  • Who would have thought we'd ever hear people who aren't Samoan screaming out "Cheehoo" and singing these sacred songs to perfection! They have been well taught by traditional Samoan instructors. Performing a traditional Samoan arrangement, including hymns, titled Mauga Ole Atu Olo by Ieti MJ Leu'u. Choloration, a combined choir of Westlake Girls and Westlake Boys High School won the top prize at the New Zealand Choral Federation (NZCF) Choir Festival.
Recorded last month at the Dunedin Town Hall by the festival organisers, The Big Sing is the Secondary Schools choir festival for the country. It saw 252 choirs from 150 schools from throughout New Zealand compete for the Platinum Prize. Choral Conductor is Rowan Johnston with Morag Atchinson on percussion. Their video webcast was sponsored by New Zealand on Air and Radio New Zealand Concert.
p.s. watching the video again, sounds like there are cheehoos are coming from a few Samoan boys in the audience lol. Cool. The thank you performance at the end suggests that. Awesome guys and thank you choir. Beautiful hearing another culture pay tribute to those songs, Aotearoa! Thank you!
Check out another outstanding performance. This time, it's Dilworth College performing a traditional Pacific medley from Samoa, Tonga and Tokelau at • Silver Medal, Traditio...

My mother heard me playing this and asked me which church choir this was… the shock on her face when I showed her the video and the actual people singing it.
She was overly amazed and what also gave it that extra flare was hearing the “cheeehooo” which shows how this choir really embraced the Samoan culture for a moment. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

In some states in the US they have Poly Club or Pacific Islanders Club at most Middle Schools and High Schools. For example, Washington’s Schools embrace the Island Cultures now in Poly Club and they usually perform Cultural Dances during School Events or School Assembly’s. Our culture is evolving, thanks to Disney and All the Island Celebrities showing our culture to the public.

Jonah Peko : you must not be Samoan, if you are then you're not very proud of your culture or your people. As a Samoan person, I find the ability of others to embrace our culture and to share it is very admirable. Also, this group had to learn the songs, and dances from someone or a group of someones who made certain that it was done correctly to represent the Samoan culture. They did an awesome job! **and if you're not Samoan, then don't talk about what you don't know -- if you are Samoan then find your pride in your culture and your people cause without it you're lost.
