UNDERWATER ARROWS... IN A LAKE?

  • I shot the Lockdown Longbow into a pool to see what happens at a guesstimated distance of 1.5m the arrows had lost a lot of energy, but could still cause harm. Firstly, I suspect I over estimated the actual distance and secondly YOU also asked how far would the arrows travel?
    My field has just flooded so now is the perfect moment to see how far a longbow arrow can actually travel.
    This film follows on from • UNDERWATER ARROWS! Jum...
    "Out of adversity comes self knowledge" - this is either an ancient quote from a mystical guru or a line I just made up; but either way works for this film.

    This will be my last film of the year; a very weird year and difficult year for us all. We have all made sacrifices in different ways this year, some very significant indeed. We are on this rollercoaster together and I would like to take this moment to thank all those, all over the world, who are fighting this Covid fight for us, on the front lines, day after long day. You are countless and amazing, and to me personally (thankfully) largely anonymous, but today I heard of a customer of mine and supporter of this channel, that fought as a paramedic and died as result, from Covid. Tomasz Napiorkowski, I salute you and all like you. Thank you.

      That's a very good question... my first thought was that it would soften the fabric making it easier to penetrate, but on the other hand it would also soak it making it expand thus making it thicker, and the softness might make it more flexible thus absorbing the energy... in any case, it would be interesting to see how it works.

      Bows of any type, including Crossbows, do not work well when fired underwater. The limbs cannot accelerate efficiently due to the density of water, thus the arrows/bolts leave the string much slower vs in air.

Thank you, Tod, for getting dirty and wet in the cold winter to make this. Your video helps me! One of my writing projects is a fantasy novel and there is a scene in which a platoon of warriors gets attacked by creatures that use the swamp to hide and ambush. Good to know the creatures can retreat into the water and render the platoon's shiny new superior crossbow technology useless, adding to the suspense and danger of the scenario.

    When bowfishing for carp here in the U.S. we use solid fiberglass arrows weighing about 95 grams (1450 gr). These are shot with no fletching to reduce drag and planing in water. The bows my friends and I shoot are modern recurves and compounds in the 50 lb range. Common carp are heavy fish with thick scales so if the arrow has enough force to drive the point completely through the fish it would definitely be enough to injure a person without armor. My observations would indicate that at around 2 meters, an arrow really starts to lose energy exponentially. At that depth a hit has to be spot on in order to not just glance off, taking a few scales with it.
    Also in Pennsylvania at least, we call it OSB.

    Great video as always! Would be interesting to see how the arrow's angle of entry would change the energy dissipation, from the 2 videos you made it seems like the farther you are from perpendicular to the surface the more the arrow loses energy (it makes sense intuitively as the torque on the arrow coming from the water increases), this seems to be a worst case scenario.

    Well done Tod, thank y our for sharing these interesting videos with us. I think the main factor overlooked with shooting the bolts underwater(or at least the modern bolts) is that they are hollow and therefore have oxygen creating buoyancy and bringing them to the surface as soon as the tension holding them is released. Hence the reason why modern Bowfishing arrows are made of solid fiberglass and not hollow. Just thought you would like to be made aware of this if not already. Thanks again, and God bless. 🏹

    Hey Tod, do you think there would be a difference in how arrows shot into water performed vs how javelins or spears thrown / dropped into water would perform? Since you don’t need to worry about distance from the top of a castle wall down to the moat, I think a heavier projectile without fletchings could do really well. (Maybe even a job for mass plumbata?) hope you have a great holiday season. Thanks for making videos!

      @@pseudomonad From my 3 seconds of google; the bows themselves are just regular 30-ish pound bows, it's the arrows that make the difference, Tod mentions the fletching near the end too.

    • @wouter.de.ruiter
      @wouter.de.ruiter 3 года назад +5

      @@pseudomonad big difference is that the arrows travel through the water vertically, not horizontally. the actual distance those fishing arrows move under water is quite short. they get momentum from their time in the air and manage to keep most of that momentum during their short stay in the water.

    Great video as always. Appeals to the engineer in me and the 14 year old who is in there somewhere. A couple of Qs. 1. So how does this relate to bow fishing which obviously works. Is it lack of Fletching or angle of incidence? 2. You demonstrated arrows pass through sand bags easily. Why is the water more of a problem? Is it because the nature of how the sand (grains) or water (molecules) particles move out of the way of the head changes with size? The water seems to offer more resistance to a moving arrow. Maybe repeat with no Fletching and alter incidence angle?
    Just watched the swimming pool vid where incidence was higher but still only 30 degrees or so.

  • @lostmarimo
    @lostmarimo 3 года назад +17

    reminds me of when i tried to cut through water with a sword and the sword just randomly swayed to the right and nearly cut into my leg. maybe the arrows do the same they kinda get stuck in a "track" in the water. also i would like to see if it works when shooting from straight up and having the board be on the ground like a meter under water. to simulate someone swimming next to a castle wall and trying to dive to avoid the arrows

    • @tl8211
      @tl8211 3 года назад

      The interface between two mediums is always critical: I suspect it's basically refracting and losing energy like that. Better strike with zero angle of incidence.

    • @cslantz4020
      @cslantz4020 3 года назад

      @@tl8211 most definitely. water wants to stick together and not push apart so when something with high energy goes into the water like that it is less akin to a smooth dive and more of a crash. like they say how with enough energy from falling from a high enough distance you will hit the water and it will be like hitting concrete or something like that. so when you shoot an arrow into the lake, the water quickly dissipates the arrows energy due to its high energy output and combined with the waters resistance . although i am not a expert on this by any means, a quick google search says this is called "drag", as friction between the object and the water (water resistance) increases with the amount of velocity the object is moving as well as many other factors.

    • @tl8211
      @tl8211 3 года назад

      @@cslantz4020 Yeah, the drag is proportional to the square of speed (at least for some range of speeds), and so at high speeds the forces can get quite enormous. That's why for the same caliber slower and heavier does better in water than fast and light (in sand too, that has somewhat similar drag equations).

    Hiya Tod, just a question have you thought of shooting into the lake/water from higher up? When you would shoot from a wall into a moat you could imagine this is high up. Depending on which type of fortress it was it could be fairly low at like 2 or 3m or much higher like the original hight of Leeds Castle for example with 10m. You did say in the genning video you wanted to see if someone trying to swim away would be able to escape unharmed. What happens with the arrow when the angle it hits the water with is changed, which happens when you should from higher up?
