We had the pleasure to spend some time on board of De Gallant when it stopped over in Bristol. This wonderful sailing ship delivers cargo under sail all around the world and the crew were kind enough to invite us on board.
This wonderful song has become very special to us as a fond farewell to friends and fans at shows and live streams, marking the beautiful uniqueness of every group we get to sing it with and for.

A good buddy of mine recently passed away at only 25 years old. He was a player in our DnD group as well as an occasional DM. I was brought to tears by the line that "we may or might never all meet here again" which reminded me that I had no idea that the last DnD session we played was the last one we ever would with him. Value your friends. You never know how much longer you have them. Rest in peace Dalton, aka Ronny Stools the Noble
Raise a tankard in memory of Dalton, filled our hearts even if we never met him.
Hey man I wish you good health and may your friend rest in peace. May Ronny Stools the Noble become legend within your games forever.
@@rosewilliamson8626 Hear Hear! One more round in the good memory of Dalton!
Here's to Dalton, I'll raise a glass for friendship! May he rest in peace.
I have a similar memory. Last year one of my players passed, shortly after his character was felled in an ambush. He died of liver failure. Rest in peace Sunny, AKA Sention the warforged monk.
Gonna use this at the end of my DnD campaign when all the characters are gathered together after their journey
Sounds perfect
I WILL DO THE EXACT SAME THING
I'm in a pirate dnd right now, and y e s.
(Also when the rest of them are playing sea of thieves, I always spam the discord music player bot with TLJ, this usually makes an appearance at the end of the session)
That's beautiful
I was thinking the exact same thing
i would like to add thath i see fire and goodbeye from the hobbit are also really good
If this isn’t played at my funeral I’m not coming
Hahaha
Same here! 😤 Thanks for the idea
Either this or Fiddler's Green by Marley's Ghost.
Damn it you beat me to it.
🤣🤣🍻
I swear the longest johns are just a Party of bards
Everyone gets an extra d6 at all times
@@thelongestjohns You guys can't be that low-level! Those must be d8s at least
they got transported from the D&D world and were just like "eh, fuck it. We can make it work here."
I see no dragon's to be Lain
Edit: get it because The Stereotype of bards is there horny all the time
goodness me, on one hand I like their music.
And on the other hand bards have caused me so much peril in my existence.
I'm late to the ship, but I'm really glad to hear that you've covered my all-time favourite song. Beautiful rendition :)
Wasn't expecting to see you here!
@@stramashbeatbox2798 It's a small world, so they say!
Thank you so much, really appreciate it :)
One of my favorites along with ashes
"Late to the ship"
*I see what you did there, you think you're slick*
A friend of mine recently passed because of covid. he was known for singing shantys at conventions.
in honor of his memory, I and my friend tom are singing this song at the first convention when covid is over.
So thank you for this, Longest John's.
Your friend will be singing alongside you from up high. You’ll make him proud ❤️
he will be the with you along the journey of the shanties that will come
I want to make kriegsman joke but i wont...R.I.P to your friend...now he sings in heaven to his comrades that passed away.
Heres a health to you and yours friend.
I'm six months late but i wish your friend peace. so hears a health to you and him
Lyrics for anyone who wants them
Kind friends and companions, come join me in rhyme
Come lift up your voices in chorus with mine
Come lift up your voices all grief to refrain
For we may or might never all meet here again
Here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
For we may or might never all meet here again
Here's a health to the dear lass that I love so well
For her style and her beauty, sure none can excel
There's a smile on her countenance as she sits on my knee
There's no man in this wide world as happy as me
Here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
For we may or might never all meet here again
Our ship lies at anchor, she's ready to dock
I wish her safe landing, without any shock
If ever I should meet you by land or by sea
I will always remember your kindness to me
Here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
For we may or might never all meet here again
Here's a health to the company and one to my lass
Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass
Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain
For we may or might never all meet here again

Nobody in the world can change my mind, The Longest Johns is one of the greatest bands in the world. (FACT)
That's incredibly kind of you to say! Thank you :)
I second this, they’re incredible.
Nobody should even try to change your mind

Agreed 100%
I can’t say there’s a single song you guys have done that I didn’t like but this is definitely one of my favorites.
That's amazing to hear, thank you!
I'm on board with every part of this statement

Oddly fitting for nowadays. Here's a health for all the friends and family we can't see right now, but be merry for we will see each other again someday.
Maybe share a bottle with different glasses, though. Not drinking out of one glass right now
If i gathered with friends right now they would be the ones I would share one glass with.
I believe we will see each other again. All of our friends. Whether in this world or the next. I rise my glass to drink to the health of my friends still here and to the memory of those gone before. I hope they will keep a place at their table for me for when I get there.
Was thinking the same thing...
i lost all mine and i remember all the good times i have and all that i lost. i take that with pride
someday mate someday
I've been working at the bristol ren fair for 8 years. This season would have made 9, but due to covid we missed out on this season. This song is sang by crew and cast at the closing day every season so it is very special to me. Here's to next season!
Here's to the next season indeed! Many blessings to you and the team
I was planning on working Bristol as well, this year. Funny how I found you.
Huzza! and hello to a fellow rennie from one whose time at Bristol was the best of my life. This song carries SO MUCH sweet and sad memories, especially the last time this is sung in the season....
Play AC Black flag > enjoy sea shanties > find the AC sea shanties edition > discover David Coffin > discover the dreadnoughts > discover a cover from the Longest Johns > find all their songs > Be amazed by an upcoming new album > love every song > play every song > sing every song for miles in the car
That’s how I fell in love with you guys.
Kind regards from France
David Coffin is pretty awesome, I went through some of his stuff on the way to the Longest Johns as well, I love his Haul Away Joe
Vive la France!
Literally me, without David Coffin.

Listening to this song after midnight unlocks secret emotions including but not limited to:
-sadness beta
-nautical longing
-dave robinson
This comment is criminally underrated, Good job dude
Especially when staring at a rough ocean on the last day of holiday. Not sure what these emotions are but they sure are a lot
@@knightstemplar9740 you, you get it
I shall soon quench my nautical longing, but the other feelings shall remain
Did the full version of sadness ever get released or are we still in beta?
i imagine a bunch of bros chilling around a campfire in the woods singing this
Or a bunch of fishermen or merchants going their separate ways and having one last drink at the local bar
Absolutely! There's a ton of meaning a feeling behind the song
I imagine a group of revered pirates spending their last night in town at local tavern before a long voyage. Some are sitting by the fire, some are passed out at the tables, some are still getting ale at the bar. The bartender makes the last call for alcohol and everyone gets a mug of ale to send off the night. The First Mate sits by the fire and grabs a guitar, singing solemnly until the whole bar joins in and erupts in song. 0:15
..and the bartenders roll their eyes and know in their hearts its going to be a looooooong night.
Prompt for a story right here
I always thought that they sing this in a party before they are going into battle the next day.
Pirates are a filthy band of rogues and street scum. They'd more likely be stone drunk raving about the towns brothel. This is more of a Royal Navy song to me.
*Raises Longest Johns Tankard to be merry*

just having this premier open as a tab somehow made a boring school day better, thanks for the good vibes :)
It's our pleasure!
Always does man always does
Come September, it'll be eight years since I lost one of my best girl friends, who was an Age of Sail history nut-- we had our own in-joke pirate crew, where she was the captain. At the funeral, we posthumously promoted her to admiral, leaving our other girl friend as captain and myself as first mate/navigator. This song and George's Glass by Skinny Lister are the two songs I remember her most by-- and was thrilled when the Johns and the Skinnys toured together. Every year I raise a glass to our old captain, knowing we'll meet again, even if it's only our hearts that know it.
My 23 year old cousin was found dead today. Waiting on Autopsy.....They think he may have been killed...
I watched him grow from a tiny lil squirmer into a fine young man. I'll miss him for the rest of my days...
RIP to that person
Oh, to be able to sit in the same room as people again, let alone drink from the same glass. Beautiful as always TLJ.
Here’s a Health to the longest Johns. May they continue to be the best shanty singer’s for the ages!
When this song was performed with natalie holmes, absolute gold! You guys have got to work with her more she just fits the sound so perfectly
She is fantastic!

If I drank a glass to all the people that I lost in the Mekong Delta five plus decades ago my liver would not survive. Instead I will have a drink to my love over the same five decades that died last year.
Here's to the health of all of you. Life is just too damn short.
Wandered down the You Tube rabbit hole and found this.Tears filled my eyes as my late wife came and sat with me for awhile. Powerful thing music
I’m sorry for your loss but glad that the music comforted you. On a lot of days, music is what gets me through.
THE FEELING THAT THIS SONGS GIVES YOU OMFG. Like it's a group of adventurers all huddled up after their adventure, some have lost lives, limbs, and friends. One of them picks up a guitar and starts playing. One solemnly sings. Then, the rest join in.
In future centuries, I can imagine groups of hardened spacers sitting around in an orbital starport bar singing just like this. I used to feel like I would miss out on that, but today we're blessed to have the Longest Johns bringing songs like this alive for all of us to share. Thank you so much!
I love this. There is nothing more I can say that has not been said and I'm not about to invent new words
Many thanks! And thank you for the kind comment :)
Never even questioned the fact that they were on a boat till I read the description, it just seemed like the natural place for them to be
Went out drinking with some friends and we started singing this. By the third verse we had most of the bar singing
TLJ is the only group i can confidently say that i like damn near every song from

First heard this song on Assassins Creed Black Flag. I liked it enough to learn it on guitar 😁
It's a cracking song
I got a guitar a few years ago and barely used it, so maybe i will
@@hotcrossbuns6585 you can find the chords for it on ultimate guitar.com. It’s actually pretty easy.
Would not recommend drinking all out of one glass in 2020, but would recommend listening to this song.
i originally thought this song was going to be like the barley mow but i am very pleasantly surprised!
God DAMN these folks are too good for this world...
I have been listening to this song in loop for the last three days. And, at last, I know it by heart! I think I'm going to sing it as a farewell to my friends at the end of our Christmas party. What do you think?
Seems a song fitting for these days we bare through. 🙏 "for we may or might never, all meet here again" - every pub goer.
There should be an auto-replay feature just because of this song.
@Jamie Klassen This, right-click on the video and select Loop from the context menu on PC, or for phone, the best way atm is putting it into a playlist by itself and looping that.
Rationality Rules brought me here. Cheers. 🍻
For me this is a song about not taking life for granted, about focusing on things most important.
So cool to see a harmonium used in western music!
When i listen to this song, i feel a loss which i never had before. The grief of losing something that i didn’t even experience. The feeling of getting to the last chapter of a book. The ship has sailed.
Last time I ever saw my best mate was at a pub, with all our friends, at my going away drinks before I left my home country indefinitely. We drank and told stories and laughed like monkeys the whole night. Listening to this song takes me right back to the last time we were all together. Make sure your mates know you love them, you never know when you might never see them again.
I feel like they came from the past to gift is there amazing voice
“Let us drink and be merry, all out of one glass...” Ah, the before times. CHEERS!
My Wife and I danced to this song at our wedding
What a great night that was, the best way to drink up the Xisto Wines before Gallant sailed on the next morning’s tide. Lots of love for The Longest John’s
This song has been getting me through quarantine. So excited for the premiere!

Love this song. So bittersweet at the moment.
It is, such a beautiful sentiment every time
I'm longing for sitting together with a bunch of friends and playing this. wow!
Sang this song with my friends last Friday. Hope I see them soon.
solo drinking on my dietary cheat day and I gotta say, was a banger to vibe to.
The vibe of this song is perfect for hanging with friends. The way the Longest Johns sing this classic is rich and wonderful.
This song is very special to me the longest John's * looks out to the sea from the land with the wind billowing through her brunette hair * a home so far away I cannot reach and friends in the U.K I miss dearly
Ah oof I'll be mid exam when this kicks off. Ah well it'll still be here afterwards and I can chill out and listen. Absolute banger of a song
It's definitely one of my favourites! Hope you enjoy the video!
This shoudlve been my farewell song to all my buds that got out of the military before me.
Seeing Dave in this music video hits different now.
"For we may or might never all meet here again" indeed 😥
See you, Space Sailor
This song alone made me want to learn harmonium. I'm now ordering one to learn it
This song almost made me sing out loud in class
Here we go, another great song!
It's a pretty special one to be sure!
The longest johns=best band
That's very kind of you, thank you for being here :)
@@thelongestjohns np i wouldn't dare miss it :)
This song makes me think of someone I loved dearly. They were an alcoholic, and went away to rehab/their family at the start of quarantine. They said they wanted to be with me when they got well. It's been a year and I haven't heard from them; I doubt I ever will. I hope I can enjoy this song one day without wanting to cry, but for now it's as good a place as any to vent.
Great setting for this lovely song which makes me feel sad at the moment remembering when our whole family were together last Christmas. Now half our family will soon be on the other side of the world & it's going to be a long time till we are all together again. :(
Love and hugs!
@@thelongestjohns Love & hugs right back. XX
Me and a whole lot of people and sailors lost their boats in Ian. I lost my 40 ft Irwin sailboat/Home and everything in it during Hurricane Ian a few days ago. I had full coverage insurance on it up until about 2 months ago when I had to let it lapse to buy a new car to get back and forth to work. I was planning on getting my insurance reinstated here in the next month, but things don't do as planned. I was one of the many that lost everything. My cat and I barely made it off the boat during the eye of the storm in Fort Myers.
Y'all are the most consistently WONDERFUL band I follow, keep being great folks!
Cheers, johns. you truly know how to help people with your music. very enchanting
It's great to hear that it helps people, thank you :)
Listening to this thinking of all my friends from high school and college and how we’ve all changed and moved on, how my parents and all the adults of my youth are now old, my grandpa who has been gone close to 20 years now and all the people I called friend whom I’ll never meet with on this Earth again. Cheers to you all and thank you for being a part of my life.

Last year I hat to go to hospital and was away from my family for a few weeks.
This year to friends of my choir passed away much too early.

One of my all-time favorites, especially with your wonderful performances. Can't wait for the premiere! Here's a health to you lads.
Here's a health indeed! Hope you like the video
Ah yes, I've been trying to find music to play Atlas to. Here I just found my most favorite band now.
I'm crying. I just discovered you guys and I have no idea how you have been off my radar for so long.
This is a song that means quite a lot to me. I am a person who has never had a place to call home. Always drifted from place to place. I have learned to make friends quickly. But as a consequence, It always makes leaving that much harder. I am a man who has had to say goodbye to more friends than I can ever remember. When I first discovered the version of this song performed by Sean Dagher after playing black flag It hit me really hard. Since then I have been playing it and performing it on constant repeat, both as a favorite song of mine and as a song of mourning.
Watching this video now... I do not say this lightly when I say that this is, by far, much better than Sean's version.
Thank you. I know it doesn't mean much coming from some random person on the Internet months after the release of the video, but you really don't know how much hearing this meant to me. It felt like finally being able to sing this Joyfully solemn song of farewell with all the friends I never had the opportunity to say goodbye to...
Even after writing this, I'm still crying.
I love this version. I used to bepart of the cast of the Bristol ren faire in the US back around 2005 for a few years ane remember this song well.
An excellent video for an excellently executed classic. Glad I could take part in the premiere.
A pleasure to have you here! Thank you
The encore you did in Michigan will be something I will never forget.
All the lads will be seeing this!

You did it! Hope you enjoyed the video

Storytime, this past September was my 21st birthday and for years I dreamed of singing this at the closing ceremony at the Michigan Renaissance Festival with the rest of the tavern for my first drink. Alas with everything closed including the festival I resorted to singing along with your album on my birthday with a drink, which was in my opinion just as fun and momentous. Thank you lads for including this song on the album.
