This entire album is stellar, but the real star (song) on this LP is "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)". I'm actually surprised that no one has requested it yet. You guys would absolutely love it.😉 Thanks for sharing.👍 Peace & Love🕊❤
Styx never strived to be a typical rock band.....their sound was unique, their instrumentation was unique, and their songs had poignant, self-reflecting messages that transcended the great music!
@joshgrant824. I agree with you. JY is not the best singer. And being in a band with Dennis and Tommy can amplify that. I just really enjoy the variety of sound he brings to the band.
Dennis De Young's best lyric writing. "Someday soon we'll stop to ponder, What on earths this spell we're under, We made the grade but still we wonder, Who did the hell we are?"
I was like 16 when this came out in high school. There was SO MUCH good music coming out -Styx, Rush, Boston, Cheap Trick....It was a cool time to be a teen...
There will never be another era like the 60s, 70s and 80s with regards to musical talent. Real musical instruments and raw lyrical talent have hardly reached such heights since then.😉
Tommy Shaw on the first guitar solo was straight rock. The second solo was James Young and he played some serious bluesy rock. The lyrics are so amazing. A much later song by Jonny Diaz called More Beautiful You (2009) mirrors the sentiment. As an aside, when you reacted to Come Sail Away, you listened to the shortened version. You need to go back to listen to the full version - you WON'T be disappointed. And Come Sail Away was also on the Grand Illusion album. Thanks again for your channel! It really brightens my day!
It's night. It's pouring torrentially. The wind is howling. And I came across you two reacting to this song. Thank you! You made an awesome night better! Stay warm, safe, and blessed!!! ❤
Me too, just now. SE PA. The transformers at the power station near my house just blew in a spectacular series of lightning bolts and showers of sparks. Half the street behind me is in the dark. Will we be next? . . . .
Amber & Jay always relax me at night after work. Seeing they're reactions & listening to some old tunes I haven't heard in awhile when I didn't have a care in the world! ❤
YES!!! You finally got to it. My favorite Styx song🎉 Keep em' coming!! Notice how Tommy Shaw's first solo was down and dirty... confusion. The next solo was soaring, breaking through the Grand Illusion. Styx knows how to match the music with the message. 😎
That second solo is played by James "JY" Young. Nice to hear them both playing solos in the same song and I especially love to hear the twin guitar harmonization.
Bought this when it came out, age 13, and it made me want to be a musician. Three years later in 1980, I was playing guitar in my first band--still doing it now. They remain a great touring band--get out and see them live.
Wow, this album always brings back memories of driving through the Santa Cruz hills on Highway 17 at 6am with no-one else on the highway going in to work. I still have the LP I bought when it was released way back in the day. Congrats on 500K subscribers!!!!!!!!!
Santa Cruz!! I'm from Santa Cruz too, grew up in Ben Lomond. I know what you mean about a song taking you right into a memory, especially a power song like this one.
@@kathybwell Small world! My Girlfriend was living in an apartment right off Highway 1 next to the Wrigley factory and I worked in San Jose. Great fun driving that highway with almost no-one on it.
Totally agree, even the order you have the songs!! Also, Styx is touring with Foreigner this coming summer, would think ticket prices would be affordable.
I'll keep saying it... There's a third lead vocalist in Styx - James "JY" Young. He was the writer of some of the band's most rocking songs, including Miss America and Eddie.
Finally! I've been requesting this for a couple years now. Mainly to see your reaction. Such an iconic song. Next up Castle Walls, Blue Collar Man and Miss America
Crystal Ball is on the Crystal Ball album, the reacted to it a couple of weeks. It's funny because I just purchased it a week before their reaction, replacing the original that was damaged. I have 6 of their albums starting with Equinox- 1975 thru Paradise Theater-1981. Couldn't stand Mr. Roboto, so Kilroy was a no for me. Looking for Styx II but hard to find, wanted $22 with shipping.
If "Come Sail Away" was your favorite STYX so far, please listen to the full album version! There is a lot that you missed out on, especially the trippy, spacy, transcendent instrumental section that makes the last chorus even more emotional and impactful!
My favorite song of theirs since I spent the summer of ‘78 listening to my older high school neighbor’s album when I was 11. **Don’t forget guys, there are songs that have James young as lead singer too.
bought my first STYX album in 72,and every one after that, this is one of my favourites. Have seen them live several times, last time in Dec 2019, hopefully will get to see them this Summer
This song is an epic banger! It still reminds me of my 9th grade year in JUNIOR high….back when there was no such thing as a high school freshman (in my era) because 9th grade was the last year of junior high. High school was 10-12.
The Grand Illusion was released on 7-7-77. It is worth listening to from start to finish. Still powerful lyrics and music almost 50 years later, a real work of art! One of my all-time favorite albums. Try Rockin’ the Paradise next. Congrats on 500,000 subscribers!
I've never even been a huge Styx fan, but always loved this song and its message - even truer today. It's so easy to be overwhelmed by the flash and fluff in the modern world - the stuff that distracts us, the stuff that divides us, etc. We keep losing sight of what's most important.
O my gosh! I love this song and I love that album too! I am so glad I remembered saving this video to watch later! Jay, you nailed it those lyrics are "But don't be fooled by the radio The TV or the magazines They show you photographs of how your life should be But they're just someone else's fantasy" Timeless lyrics and so true to this day. I'm glad you picked up on that one! Such a wonderful song. I am glad you enjoyed it as much as we do! I enjoyed your reaction video! ☮ and 💕
Glad you're still working your way through the amazing Styx songs. Keep 'em coming! Other greats: Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man), Don't Let It End, Light Up, Lorelei, Miss America, Love is the Ritual.
For yet ANOTHER side of Styx, check out another song on this album “Miss America”.. with guitarist James Young on lead vocals! It was pretty popular on FM RADIO back in the day! ❤
I saw Styx on this tour in 1977 back in high school Junior year when they played this album at the amazing venue of our high school skating rink/summer concert stage! Those were the days! I imagine we paid $3.50 or so for a ticket but I don’t remember. I do vividly remember this being a great show though! They opened with this song as you might imagine. I saw Kansas at the same skating rink around the same time for the Leftoverture tour. 😊
OK, I just went back and watched the 2 reactions for the Stray Cats. You definitely need more. You have no idea how hard they rock. They are New Wave, Punk Rock attitude launched into a unique creative expression. They chose Rockabilly music and along with a movie called Swingers resurrected an entire musical genre. The swing dancing, the bowling, the cars, burlesque, tattoos it all comes back from because of the Stray Cats. They cover the Clash's Brand New Cadillac if you want a great rocker. LIVE !
Just for the record, Tommy wasn't the only guitar player. James Young was there too, and could jam with the best of them. He might have even played the lead on this, as they often switched off.
Great song, great reaction. I’m glad you both get it. I’ll be seeing them live on the 19th from the front row. You all should see them if you can. They still rock!
As a 16 year old when this album released, I thought it was the most beautiful music I had heard since ELO. I was able to see them perform live and bought every album they made. Thanks so much for the memories with your reactions!
Being almost 65 yrs old and remember hearing this as a teen..and still have days where I rock out with Styx. I saw them at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville a few yrs ago, such a great concert.
One of the great things about Styx is they had two incredible guitarist so on a song like this you can get two completely type of guitar solos. The first raw, dirty solo by Tommy Shaw and the second lighter flowing solo by JY. Amazing!!
You guys are the best. Thanks for bringing back so many memories. I was lucky enough to see Styx for their Paradise Theatre concert in early 80's. Awesome concert.
Dennis DeYoung always likes to bring the dramatic to their music and the LIVE performances. I wish there was a complete video (maybe there is somewhere) of their Kilroy Was Here stage production. It’s basically a Broadway type production. Frickin’ amazing! I saw it from the second row at the Berkeley Community Theatre back in 83, phenomenal.
I think this was actually my first album, and Styx was my first concert back in '78. Loved them back then, appreciate them so much more now even. Love you are going down the Styx rabbit hole!
Thanks for your reaction- great band! They were very theatrical and put so much into their live shows- I saw them in concert 5 times. It still breaks my heart that they had their falling out with Dennis DeYoung.
They came to my hometown to play at our summer county fair. This song in particular I still have memories of lit up carousels and beautiful ocean air. Great times. Thank you Styx! 🎡🎢
I'd heard them on the radio starting in 7th grade, 1972, but when I hung with a friend after school in her bedroom she played their 2nd album, Styx II (1973) and when I heard them do Little Fugue in G I was blown away. As a pianist trained on classical music and then a LOT of Elton John 😊 I love orchestrated rock. Their recording of Bach's wonderful fugue is fabulous. Blessings❤
Hey Jay and Amber!!! By the way Amber, Tommy Shaw isn't the only lead guitarist in Styx!! The comment right I James JY Young. He's the other guitarist in the band. And you probably heard his guitar playing in this song!! This one's for J. The bass player's name is Chuck Panozzo. His twin brother John was the drummer. Sadly he passed away in1996. Thought you'd like to know.

This album is incredible and for Tommy Shaw at his finest; check out “Man In the Wilderness” and “Fooling Yourself”.
Tommy doing Fooling Yourself with the Clevland Youth Orchestra is a wonderful version.

25 year old here. I asked my dad to buy this album strictly cuz the art intrigued me. Every song on there is fire. Even miss america

Great song written and sung by JY.
Miss America is 🔥. JY is so under appreciated as Styx’s third lead singer.
