And if you watch a video of it feeding, you see how it's face / head opens to reveal its tentacle'y feeding tubes fangs whatevers... it's like seeing what inspired Stranger Things (besides D&D, ofc). *shudder*
Pretty sure its localization that picks the english names. In japanese it is "kurione" which literally means sea angel, based on "clione" from the family name "clionidae". And specifically, the clione limacina is referred to both as a sea angel, and as a naked sea butterfly, since it has no shell. The more you know!

I'd be interested to know about the evolutionary arms race the sea angels and butterflies have been in. How do we know the various steps each has taken? Do these creatures fossilise?
I would assume that (a) they are damned small so hard to identify, and (b) don't have any hard tissue so the likelyhood of fossilization is very much approaching 0%.
i think it's because each region species has different evolutionary branches that it ends up become a different kind of ways, they outsmart each other in each region that scientist concluded that they have arms race just against each other. (this is just my assumptions that i think of what most likely happened, but i'm not a biologist who can prove this conjecture)
Ah the lovely sea angel. If you're a fan of Battle Cats, it's known as Cruel Angel Clionel, Cli-One, Death Angel Z-Onel, and Great Angel Chibinel. If you're a fan of Darius, that's The Embryon.
I really enjoyed hearing about these unique creatures, but I feel this episode really misses some historical info. You say several times that the Sea Butterfly and Sea Angel evolved to outclass one another, even claiming they have played “evolutionary chess since, well, forever”. I was hoping for a step-by-step of how they began and when they changed what, expecting scientists had figured that out by examining fossils going back thousands or millions of years. Instead, we only get to hear about their latest versions. 😢

4:00 actually reminds me a lot of wolf snails (genus Euglandina). they're fast, and they grab onto and hold their prey (other snails and slugs) with their foot and then project their mouth ('buccal mass') into the opening of the prey's shell. they've also got an extra set of tentacles to help them smell the slime trail of their prey better.
