I have driven past many times and always wondered what sort of build it is. I have just built a super insulated house locally to you, so I understand a lot about what you set out to achieve. A truly unbelievable house; well done.
You can tell that guy is very passionate about what he does.
This build is absolutely bang on and get a massive gold star from me. It follows that over-delivering on insulation and onsite power generation pays dividends. All the naysayers saying solar PV is BS is because an average 2.5kw system on the 'average' homes roof cannot possibly cover 'average' power needs let alone compensate for poor insulation values.
it would be a lot greener if it wasnt such a huge bloody house, 17,000 sq feet? who needs all that space?
Everyone complaining in the comments isn't understanding that this is a PROJECT not necessarily a run of the mill family home, so should not be thinking of it as such - really interesting to see what options there are and advocating for these to be commercialised and made accessible through "proof" in projects like these is the way forward! It's a tech experiment and it's fascinating!
Why in the world isn't the government looking at grants to insulate our old housing stock (such as pre cavity wall homes) with products such as Aerogel Insulation? i understand the cost is quite high, but if this grant scheme is rolled out across the UK, the cost should come down somewhat? and in theory, we will only need to do upgrade a home once

I'm almost completely fossil free off grid but still have some work to do. Just added ASHP - 25.5 SEER and HSPF 13. Also have been adding over the years, now have 14.65kW PV, 15kWh battery back up. Since we are in the Catskill Mountains of New York we get some very cold winters, in the summer we over produce energy with zero grid input, that's with charging the EV, hot water, well pump, house and AC. During the winter we do buy a small amount of grid energy but we pay extra for 100% renewables.

Wow, I have been searching for this for years. I wish it was widely available in Europe. So interesting. I d love an update and more in depth video with this gentleman showing us exactly how to insulate an older building so I can replicate it on my house. Thank you so for this video.

This has only just come up in my RUclips feed but I've shared it with the Fully Charged Show team despite their having covered this property in one of their earlier shows as the mention of the aerogel insulation and the solid waste management system wasn't included in their overview of Moonstone. Aerogel is very expensive at the moment but just imagine the possibilities for insulating the UK's poorly insulated and drafty housing stock en masse; surely the price of it would drop dramatically, perhaps as dramatically as that of wind and solar.
I aim to live off grid in the next few years and will definitely be following this project, just wonder how much this whole house has cost
Well baring in mind it is 17,000 ft². So 10 times the average size of a UK home... It has loads of tech and he adds or updates with the latest tech often... Then you know the answer is, it has cost someone or business a lot of money. We added 7.5kw of PV (£6.5k), a Tesla Powerwall (6.5k), MVHR (£4k), and loads of insulation (£massive) to our home 2 years ago. The costs have only risen since then. Internal wall insulation was done as part of a renovation so pricing is difficult, but think of the cost of removing all plaster from your house. Buying plasterboard with insulation attached at £60-£150 per board depending on insulation thickness. Getting a plasterer to fit them with care and seal between joints correctly and between floorboards and then skimming nicely and re decorating.

this is very much a showcase project as all the fancy equipment has a life on them and I wouldn't think it will be a greener solution given how much resources have been used up-front.

Love this. Some great ideas and a fantastic demonstration site. We’ll done .. but why did you build such a large house17,000 Sq is about 15 three bedroom houses. How many people live there?
In many ways that was part of the point - you needed something large for the technology to really come into its own - yes the sq footage is excessive - (hello haters) but why aren’t large blocks of flats being built this way - imagine 10 flats in the same self sufficient building (may need a bigger unit for the toilets!! lol)

Wouldn't you be able to use the low grade heat coming from the solar thermal to feed the heat pump, even when the solar isn't enough by itself? I mean instead of having all those ground arrays, bore holes etc?

I think it’s unlikely everyone would have one of these, imagine in a city, don’t think there would be enough land? Interesting ‘end of days’ sentiment though. Perhaps If they built 20 story buildings with 200 flats or hotel rooms in, in this way… it’s an idea isn’t it. Good job people are willing to waste their own time and money to see what’s possible

You generata a lot of heat and use that in the house/pool and so on, but what about electricity? I don't see a large amount of batteries or solar panels??

I've been working on smallish inexpensive sustainable PassivHaus designs for a few years now, but I still watch stuff like this or even the super hippy sandals type. Good for new ideas or creative things that can be used in conjunction with existing techniques to boost efficiency w/o the two extremes that feel too gritty or wasfully posh.

30mm of aerogel is not equivalent to 700mm of rockwool, a least not thermally. That's just wrong. Aerogel is 0.015 W/mK. Rockwool is 0.045 W/mK. So 30mm of aerogel is equivalent to about 90mm of rockwool.
Also aerogel is vapour permeable not impermeable
It's fantastic to see how much technology exists today (and has done for years in fact) to make housing more sustainable, energy efficient, etc.
Had enough investment and political effort been put into making this tech more widely available to "normal" housing in the past decade we probably wouldn't be in the energy & cost of living crisis we are suffering with today.
It's great that privately financed projects like this exists and prove their worth, but how to pursuade the governments of the world to make this the norm in all housebuilding?!?
Right now, sadly, all this remains the preserve of the wealthy and the poorest in society continue to suffer. Perhaps you need to start bribing/donating more to political parties.
Your channel is prove that humanity still has a shot at survival on this planet...barely ;-)

Would be interested to see calculations for embedded carbon too. Surely the most ecological house can never be this extravagant. It's not as if we could build 4bn of these houses to give everyone in the world shelter, as the consumption of resources would be completely unsustainable, even if the running costs are very low..
Agree. It’s not just the swimming pool, but the size of the house in general that calling it an “eco house” feels kind of ridiculous.
You can put a lot of people in large buildings - why does eco have to mean building multiple small buildings ? What’s the best way to save energy this winter? By everyone in the street gathering in one structure! - individual homes are not necessarily the best way to house a growing nation. Why are new blocks of apartments, environmentally built not being constructed in the uk countryside? I don’t think john is suggesting the best way to save the planet is for everyone to have a private swimming pool - he has spent his own money exploring possibilities - in a property big enough to experiment and prove concepts.

I find it funny you are using aerogel, the main business from aerogel in Australia is for the oil and gas industry. It's made with incredibly high embodied energy, and is sold to the single biggest polluters in the world. So from a moral point of view, it's a terrible product.

How on God's green earth can this be the best eco house in Europe ? It is ten time the size and I would guess, ten times the cost of the average UK house. It proves very little and makes people think going carbon neutral is a very expensive pass-time for the wealthy.
Dunno what 'best' means but it's an experimental project that is educating us on new eco technologies.
I wouldn't build my home with so much tech. The chances of failure would be very expensive, I think. But I'm glad this dude is using his money to experiment so the rest of us can learn
Yep would like to know its true carbon footprint is- we should be aiming for 'carbon negative buildings' not carbon neutral - appears to be lots of very expensive high tech solutions used here -which appear to have high embodied carbon content ..........KISS principles are usually cheaper and more effective in terms of being truly eco.........
Totally missing the point. Over the lifetime of this house its carbon footprint will be hugely less than an average house with fossil burning energy sources. It’s a showcase of what is technically possible and of what needs to be integrated into every home.
It’s an experiment demonstration thus a proof of concept.
Fine for the super-rich, what about the rest of us? I do wish these rich people would stop lecturing the rest of us about the benefits of unaffordable technologies.

Well put. There seems to be a lot of ‘shouty defensive dogs in corners ‘ on this whole topic. So funny to see how people who used to drive v8 sports cars used to shout and throw things at anyone talking about going Green. Now they drive Tacans and make their old friends shout in corners. If people don’t want to be ‘lectured’ and by that I mean ‘told something’ about a man’s exploration into Green technology then don’t watch - find an echo chamber. You don’t have to be super rich to be made to think about the benefits of insulation.
