    We've waited eight months for this day. Finally, we can park the camper on the land, specifically in the shop. This day happened on December 1st. I'm typing this on the morning of December 11th, and we still do not have electricity. We've been powering the camper off a generator, which isn't a huge burden, but we will be glad when we don't have to listen to it nonstop. In real-time, electricity is scheduled to be installed tomorrow or the next day if it's dry enough.
    Since moving into the shop, we've had one night when the outside temperature dropped to 19 degrees, but it stayed about 40 degrees inside. Even on the coldest winter days here in Mississippi, I don't see a scenario where it gets below freezing inside.
    The current plan (which changes almost daily) is to keep the camper parked in the shop through the cold of winter. Once it starts to warm up, the camper will be moved to behind the shop, and we will work on our second-story lofted apartment inside the shop.
    The woodworking side of the shop will be a slow setup process. Of course, we still need electricity. First, I need to figure out a scissor lift situation to install lighting. Then, I could use the lift to collect the dust and electrical drops. At that point, I can move the machines into position.

      We just had a shop built over the summer with a similar metal structure. We understand the obstacles and the excitement, so happy for you and the family. I also knew that I would be up in the ceiling often, so I picked up a used scissor lift off of GovPlanet for $1500 (Model is Genie GS1930). It's been an awesome help so far.

    Well done, apart from all the mud on Jamie's clean floor.😊
    You may need to knock up some shelves to get the stuff off the floor and make easier to find stuff.

    Too Late Now Department: Cross ventilation during the day - two doors as far apart as possible to maximise air replacement. Generator outside in the lean-to and the power cable brought in thru one of the windows, duck tape the window opening if its letting in too much cold air or freeloading critters. Should have kept one log, chainsawn or axed/split it in half lengthways then placed it on the floor where the back wheels of the camper should reach, which would have stopped you from backing thru the wall. Maybe should have invested in a roll of 'builder's plastic' to put on the floor before all the mud got brought inside on the camper and truck wheels.
    My caravanning days were back in the 1960's and 70's in a caravan half the size of yours - everything was hand powered where possible - a length of 2x to lift the tongue so Dad could bolt the jockey wheel on, the spring bars between the camper and tow were tensioned by pulling up on them with two hands while the other party adjusted a length of chain to keep the tension. Fun stuff.
    Future Planning Department: Have you considered a passive heating wall for the shop (and possibly one for the house) Just basically a bunch of black plastic drums connected together with a passive heat syphon keeping the water circulating, then a hose going from the top of the drums inside to a radiator then back out to the drums lower level. A hardstanding for the drums is optional but desirable. If/when you no longer need it for the shop or house you can reuse them to heat a greenhouse and still grow most vegtables year round. Plenty of ideas and plans on the 'Net to look at. Instead of plastic drums people are often throwing away rooftop water heating panels used for heating a swiming pool in winter, sort of a rubber 'solar' panel, connect together with short pipe sections and hose clamps, then connect to PVC pipe to circulate the warm/hot water.

      Too Late Now Department Reply: The 6 windows and 2 man doors face west, to allow wind to blow in. Large roll up door on the south and east man door open = nice breeze so far. No need for the generator anymore as we got shore power hooked up today.
      Future Planning Department Reply: Yes, I've considered a lot. I came into this really wanting to build an earthship house for completely passive heating and cooling. I couldn't sell that one to my better half. I do plan on experimenting with passive heating and cooling on other structures on the property.

    Jay, be careful in running any propane furnace or water heaters inside the barn.... if u do make sure u have CO monitors close to where u guys are. Thus no back drafting into ur living/sleeping quarters.

    Congrats and well done. Moving on the property full time IS a significant step. I have been waiting for this day for quite some time. But it is finally here. About my only critique is I would have gone from using the truck to the tractor far earlier than you did. When I am parking my trailer in the garage, I do the swap almost as soon as the wheels are inside. I can just see so much better and am so much more maneuvarable using my tractor. But it is in!
    This will be a day long remembered. Now go celebrate.

    Idk who was more stressed. Ones their or those of us watching that had tough backups. They say two short wheel bases are hardest. I disagree personally. I am worst at a short trailer with a long truck platform that turns like crap. Give me your truck and that trailer. Oh. Maybe I should continue. I can do it all day but it’s still sketchy and still stressed out in that sit. Glad your home ish and get to see what you have missed in person with the wild life, human or not

    2 minutes before you switched to the tractor I said to my fiancée ... it would be easier to use the tractor or the jeep, the truck is too big :) --- that's a huge step done, so happy for you guys

    • @BPo3Homestead
      @BPo3Homestead  Месяц назад

      hahaha for sure. The jeep would have been great but I don't think it could handle the tongue weight. This is a toy hauler trailer so it naturally has a high tongue weight and I exaggerated that by 450lbs or so with the 3P hitch. The tractor almost wasn't heavy enough.

      I appreciate the inclusion of temp and speed conversion for non-Americans. But that seems way too cold for me. We had a 40°c (104°f) day yesterday and went to watch a hockey game in shorts and t-shirt. A few funny looks but that kind of temperature variation is killer.

    • @Cynyr
      @Cynyr Месяц назад

      @@LostWhits wiki has a nice table for the temps here. The swing between summer and winter is pretty extreme, as are the record highs and lows 104f (40c) to -40. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_of_Minneapolis%E2%80%93Saint_Paul

    A great job of some tricky manoeuvring. Being in the shop will give you some thermal protection, and I agree, it's a big space to worry about 'CO'. Hopefully the power is connected sooner than later. Well done. Another milestone past. :😁😎

      Power hooked up today! (12-12-24) Just 11 days with the generator. Not enough to drive anyone bonkers but definitely enough to appreciate the peace and quiet tonight of the subtle tick of an oil filled radiant heater in the absence of generator noise.

      Pomeranian. We rescued him during covid. He was 7 at the time and named Scooter. We've had our 16 year old toy poodle shiatzu mix named Skeeter since he was a puppy. So we unintentionally have a Scooter and a Skeeter.
