A very common problem and you explained it very clearly. I especially appreciate the river analogy and the emphasis on how our thoughts are a natural phenomenon that is only a representation (or assumptive interpretation) of what we imagine as reality. The first technique is more attractive to me because there's always a need to lighten up when our thoughts are repetitive and overwhelming. But repeating a troubling thought out loud very quickly - even for just 30 seconds - makes me wonder, might it not reinforce the negativity?
