I think you're right - that on a technical level Neil Peart is the greatest rock drummer of all time - but John Bonham will always win the popular vote. It's one thing to be great - it's another to be widely loved. Bonham edges him out on the latter. But i mean no disrespect - i agree with you when measured in terms of a mastery of the art.

@@MrJeddYoung But he doe not always win the popular vote. I am a drummer that loves both Bonzo and Neil. Drummers from 80s and 90s will usually say they started off with Bonham but their entire mindset changed with Neil. As far as the public goes, JH and NP go back and forth in public opinion polls. One thing that I do know....Neil could easily play Bonhams style and drum parts.....Bonhan even had he lived a long life would not have been able to play much of Neil's. Very different styles and techniques. I do believe most drummers would pick Neil, at least most I have talked to.

Good reaction! Three of the most talented musicians you will ever hear in rock. The drummer passed away a few years ago; he wrote most of the lyrics for the band and was considered one of the best drummers in rock. Rush is indeed a Canadian rock band that formed in 1968. I would recommend "The Spirit of Radio" next, then the 1981 live version of "Xanadu", from their concert "Exit Stage Left". Watching the band perform that song live always blows my mind!

This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy!
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
    Gary

Tom Sawyer is a character in Mark Twain novel. He was a bare footed country boy. This song to me addressed today’s youth and the reference to the space he invades, which is based on the Zelda video game of its day called Space Invaders. So, it’s basically about the youth of the early 80s and probably deeper than the simple explanation I provided. Rush are a three piece and Geddy Lee is the singer, bassist and keyboardist and manages to pull all off live and not just in the studio as you see in this video. Each member of the band are extremely talented musicians and the late drummer Neil Peart is one of the most highly regarded drummers in rock history and he is also the lyricist. I would consider their music Progressive Hard Rock.

    • @stephenzepp6536
      @stephenzepp6536 Год назад +10

In the book, Tom Sawyer was also a bit of a "quiet rebel"--he didn't follow societies norms for how he should act or believe, and the song describes what "Today's Tom Sawyer" is like: same attitude of quiet but firm rejection of society stereotypes and norms in favor of more sane (to the character) beliefs.

I was about to right the same type of comment but saw you already didi it. I'm Russian who was reading Tom Sawyer when I was a kid in the seventies and was listening to Rush in the eighties. Am I surprised that American (or Canadian??) mid aged couple never heard about Rush? No.
Am I'm surprised that they never heard about Mark Twain? Oh well, this shows what a modern educational system is all about. Everywhere in North America and Russia and Europe the decline is obvious.
I was grown in the USSR. It was a communist country very much isolated but the education was on a high level for both mathematics and physics and also linguistic and world literature including American authors.
If I ask any of my classmates if he or she knows who Tom Sawer was they gonna look at me as an idiot . Of course they know ! The painting of the fence is good example of Tom Sawyer's life hacks (the expression didn't existed at this time).
As for Rush we didn't have easy access to this type of music. Western LP' s were imported almost illegally by diplomats and other people allowed to travel abroad. It was a tiny slice of the society. The government didn't understand that more it's prohibited more youngsters want it.
Sorry for the long speech but both names mean so much. A time journey in fact.

Nailed it when you said “this a lot to take in, intricate, need more listens to really get it.”
    1) three elite musicians, all in the conversation for best ever on their instruments
    2) unlike many virtuoso individual players, there was no “diva” in any of the three. Three way musical mind meld that redefines the term “tight.”
    3) you really have to see them perform live to really take in how great they are. “Exit Stage Left” (1981) is peak Rush. “Xanadu” is a 12 minute epic (zips by in what feels like half that time) that captures their brilliance. The whole show is great.
    4) drummer Neil Peart is widely recognized as the GOAT. Brilliant lyrics too. “Favorite drummer’s favorite drummer” from Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) who should know.
    5) Eddie Van Halen was asked how it felt to be the best rock guitarist. He said “I don’t know, ask Alex Lifeson.”
    6) Geddy Lee may be the most versatile. Sings, plays terrific bass, plays keyboards with his hands AND FEET. Does it all seamlessly. Again, really have to see them live to appreciate it.

This was " eighties Rush", my first album of theirs was when A farewell to Kings came out, I was 14, my friends brother was playing it and I immediately gravitated to it. They were a very special band.

I fell in love with this song and Rush when I was 6 or 7 and my teenaged brother played it on the record p!ayer..lol something I dig most about this particular video is that they totally look like 3 regular guys of the times who just walked off the street, but held the power of lightning in the proverbial bottle within them..

Thanks very much guys, that was an entertaining reaction. You're right about Rush's lyrics, there is so much going on musically in their songs that it's hard to discern exactly what is trying to be conveyed lyrically on your first listen. However, a second or third listen will be very revealing and edifying, they're not your standard rock music lyrics, it requires some effort and time. BTW, I enjoyed that so much you just earned yourself another subscriber and yes indeed, Rush is Canadian. Cheers from Ontario, Canada!

Tom Sawyer is the character in the old Mark Twain Novel. A rebelious kid.
No auto tune or Pro Tools used in the studio. Rush was the real deal! Musicians at a level not known today.
Masters of their craft! Your take about this be 'orchesteral" is spot on. Rush wanted to be the worlds smallest orchestra. 3 guys made this much sound! Mind blown🤯
