The key with Rush is extraordinary musicianship. Neil Peart was incredibly articulate and well read. He wrote almost all the lyrics. Geddy plays bass, keyboards, and sings simultaneously. Alex is a gifted guitar player. You can hear the skill.

Just FYI...Geddy & Alex had the animation done after Neil's passing in 2020, hence the tribute at the end. Neil wrote the lyrics about what he loved about the radio, starting in his childhood, hearing the right song at the right time, but the second half was his thoughts on how "One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity"....they were getting tired of the "Salesmen" and radio execs just wanting short songs to help maximize profits. As always, RIP to "The Professor".

It seems that just top 10 stations want to shorten songs. No rock/metal station will shorten any song, no matter how long. Radio stations wanted a short version of "Dry County" by Bon Jovi. Jon Bon Jovi decided not to release the song on the radio if they were going to cut his song.

Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart explained this song in an interview with Billboard magazine: "'The Spirit Of Radio' was actually written as a tribute to all that was good about radio, celebrating my appreciation of magical moments I'd had since childhood, of hearing 'the right song at the right time.' However, [the song's] celebration of the ideals of radio necessarily seemed like an attack on the reality - on the formulaic, mercenary programming of most radio stations, with music the last of anyone's concerns. And yes, it was really ironic that such a song became popular on radio, though it was a kind of litmus test. Some radio guys who 'got it' could hear the song and think, 'That's the way it ought to be,' while others - the shallow, swaggering salesmen-of-the-air - could be oblivious to the song's meaning and proudly applaud themselves, 'That's about me!'"

Rush was a great Canadian rock band formed in 1968. The band's style changed over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, then a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers, before returning to guitar-driven hard rock since the end of the 1980s. They had a lot of great songs such as "Not Fade Away", "In The Mood", "Working Man", "Bad Boy", "Fly By Night", "Limelight", "Red Barchetta", "The Trees", "Subdivisions", "Closer To The Heart", "Xanadu", "Anthem" etc.

Cool trivia about this band is that Alex and Geddy have been best friends since high school, and they still are, unlike many long term bands.
Neil joined the band after the first album was released but just before the bands first North American tour in 1974. He’s still affectionately known as “the new guy.” He is (was) a very quiet, recluse, big time reader, and wrote the lyrics to their music.

    A little history lesson.
Rush is a Canadian band from Toronto. There was only one radio station that would play alt rock and indie music in the area; That was 102.1 CFNY “The Spirit of Radio”.
At the time, it wasn’t worried too much about making money, but more of promoting new and up coming indie bands.
David Marsden was the music director at the time when Spirit of Radio (song) came out and according to him, it was a tribute to the radio station CFNY.
Search 1021 spirit of radio and there is an old website talking about the 80’s/90’s
The “Ongoing History of New Music” with Alan Cross podcast started when he was working for CFNY (interesting deep dive into music)

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
    Gary

Also noted where the jam box exploded at the end that the parts were symbols from several albums. Fun to see such things woven into the video!

To put this video in context, the disk jockeys they show were the heroes of "pirate radio". In the 1960s the BBC, Britain's nationalized broadcast system, had a ban on rock music, so British youth had very little exposure to rock and roll. Feeling that these young people had a right to hear uncensored music, a few enterprising individuals bought some questionably seaworthy ships, equipped them with powerful transmitters, and parked them.off the British coast, blasting rock and roll into the British Isles. This led to some heated confrontations with British authorities. The people shown here were the actual deejays who risked harassment and legal action to bring rock and roll to British ears. There's actually a movie called "Pirate Radio" starring Philip Seymour Hoffman that's really pretty good and portrays a relatively accurate story of how that all went down. And really embodies the theme of this song about freedom of the airwaves. If you ever get the chance to see it, it's a worthwhile look at an often overlooked aspect of post-WWII history.

This is Rush's homage to their Local Radio Station CFNY, who played Local Groups entire new albums, and Deep Cuts from Canadian Bands, resisting the Corporate Style of the day of playing the same songs over and over.
CFNY's Moniker was "The Spirit of Radio", and their channel was 102.1. Rush asked for and got that the album be number 1021 which you can see on the pressing on the inside of the record.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but when you're doing a reaction video to a Rush song, the lyrics are of paramount importance! You absolutely MUST choose a video with lyrics or have the lyrics handy. Drummer Neil Peart was a prolific reader, a true Bibliophile. They didn't call him "The Professor" for nothing. While the instrumentals are fantastic, it's the lyrics that really bring each song to life. In fact, Neil's lyrics are so profound that Rush has been called the "Thinking Man's" band. 🎸🥁

I think you're ready to see the band live now, simply because if I told you they perform all their own music live you'd have to see it to believe it.
My recommendation is La Villa Strangiato (The Strange Village), an instrumental that is far less pretentious and more listenable than you might think. There are at least two good versions, the "straight" version here ruclips.net/video/eK1hmDpa8bo/видео.html , recorded earlier in their career, or the "gag intro" version here ruclips.net/video/Z3zlRdksakI/видео.html that came many years later.
If you absolutely insist on a song with lyrics, here's Xanadu, in which the narrator finds that immortality might not be all that it's cracked up to be: ruclips.net/video/SEuOoMprDqg/видео.html

You landed right on the tip of the Rush iceberg for the two albums that sound basically the same and came out in 1980 and 1981. If you rewind to 1976, you'll hear a completely different Rush. If you fast forward to 1987, you'll hear a completely different Rush. They changed sub-genres every 5 years or so. You just happened to land on 2 back-to-back albums they did in the same style. If you move backwards to 1978, you'll have a much more standard guitar-centric sound. If you advance forward, to 1982 you'll have a much more "modern" New Wave influence. I'd recommend either "Subdivisions" off of Signals, or "Red Sector A" off of Grace Under Pressure. In either case, HAVE LYRICS READY! Neil was not only a great drummer, but he was a phenomenal lyricist. Unlike a lot of bands, you're going to miss out on half the song if you don't keep up with the lyrics.

Two incredible Rush songs by three virtuosos reacted too, and only about 175+ songs to go in their legendary discography covering 4 decades. Even an album of 60's classic rock cover songs to boot! Not to mention numerous live albums. One of the few bands consistently as good or better than the already incredible studio recordings. several different eras of Rush to dive into, always pushing the envelope and keeping with the times, yet never copying, but taking the latest ideas and making them their own, remaining more influential than influenced.
So, where to go from here? Do you guys prefer 70's, 80's, 90's or 2000's rock n' roll? Long story driven rock symphonies? Instrumental rock? Main stream progressive hard rock and metal? Or how about a full concept album based on a Steampunk story line with everything from heavy metal and classic prog rock with ballads and symphonic masterpieces thrown in for good measure? Rush does it all and as you go on your Rush journey you will learn not to be surprised that they will always surprise.
I'm not going to recommend anything in particular at this time, I'll wait until everyone else recommends all the most popular songs and rock symphonies and get those out of the way. Then I'll make recommendations on some deep cuts every bit as good as the famous songs, just a bit before and after the height of their commercial fame of the late 70's and through the 80's.

Alex Lifeson - 6 string guitar, 12 string guitar, pedal synthesizer, volume pedal; Geddy Lee - Vocals, bass guitar, 6 string guitar, foot pedal synthesizer, electric piano/synthesizer; Neil Peart - Lyrics, Drums, orchestra bells, tubular bells, wind chimes, crotales, timbales, timpani, gong, temple blocks, bell tree, triangle, and melodic cowbells.
Based on Kubla Khan (Xanadu) by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Coleridge composed his poem, ‘Kubla Khan’, in a state of semi-conscious trance either in the autumn of 1797 or the spring of 1798 and published in 1816. The whole poem is pervaded by an atmosphere of dream and remains in the form of a vision. The vision embodied in Kubla Khan was inspired by the perusal of the travel book, Purchas His Pilgrimage. Coleridge had taken a dose of opium as an anodyne, and his eyes closed upon the line in the book, “At Zanadu Kubla Khan built a pleasure palace.” But this opened his creative vision, and the poem of about 200 lines was composed in this state of waking dream. On being fully awake, he wrote the poem down. The theme of the poem is unimportant. It describes the palace built by Kubla Khan, the grandson of Chengis Khan, the great rule of central Asia.

I loved this song the first time I heard it. I love most of the lyrics, except for the last verse, which could mean different things to different people. This has always been one of my favorite theories on the what the last verse is about: In the last verse, the line "The words of the profits are written on the studio wall" is a play on words. Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart wrote it as "profits" rather than "prophets" to expose the money-grubbing side of the music industry. The lyrics were included in the album and the CD.

The vids are fun.... to really appreciate Rush, have to watch live performances. Just as Beth Hart, Rush is one of those few bands that are better live than on vinyl.

It felt like you were Vibin to the drums which is appropriate. Neil always did more than just keeping time. If you listen to his parts, they add so much to the melody and dynamics of the song beyond a traditional drummer part.

"Red Barchetta", "By-Tor And The Snow Dog", "The Trees", "Xanadu" and for the spacey stuff "Cygnus X-1", "Cygnus X-1 Book 2", and "2112". Those last two are epic compositions that take up the whole side of an album. Cygnus and X-1 and Book 2 are on separate albums but they go together. And for some fun "I Think I'm Going Bald".

Just a friendly FYI, nothing Rush did was "customary." From the blues-based rock they started with, all they way through their 40+ year career they ranged through multiple sounds, time signatures, themes, etc., and brought absolute genius to every note they ever recorded, or played. IMHOOC
