I just added curtains to my patio cover. I was going to add sand in the bottom fold portion of the curtains, (there is extra length at the bottom that I fold up) but then I thought sand being organic material may grow-moss in them and look nasty. You gave me a great idea. I have a bunch of steel chain of course it will rust, but I don’t think it’ll look as bad as sand, i’m thinking also about putting the chain inside old bicycle inner tubes and zip tying it off, so it will be sealed. Thanks for the ideas.
Perfect, all summer last year I was trying to figure it out did fishing weights too but they didn't work too well thank you so much, you and the internet win again.
@@TheWorldToday839 I'm honestly not sure how the chain Is rated but the heavier the better. Definitely more heavy than what is used to hang plants on a porch.
I usually get the lightweight mop stick THEN insert em in lowest part of curtain THEN GLUE it INSODE but I got tired of this...THEN CAME YOU! GONNA DO IT. ( From Kingston, Jamaica 🇯🇲)
@@veganconservative1109 You can get rubber coated chains to avoid this too. By the time they rust through the rubber your curtains will probably need to be replaced anyways
SOLUTION Home Depot, rebar/concrete section, 18” steel stakes, about $5 a pop, each weighs approximately 2.75lb. Most cost effective solution. Chain works, but to get chain heavy enough, it’s gonna cost at least double or triple. I have 27’ of curtain outside and it was gonna run me at least $60 as opposed to $25, along with the hassle of cutting through heavy duty chain.
Can't add weights...I have white sheers. It would pull the rod down. Smh I'm getting white thumb tacks and putting them at the bottom of each panel adhering to the wood deck. It's the only thing that works. Nothing else works. With high winds on a steep hill, save yourself aggravation, just use white hair clips to clip up top directly on rod or a few matching zip ties and thumb tacks. I'm done trying to figure this out.
How heavy is your chain? It seems like it would do some damage if a strong gust of wind came and the chain wasn't heavy enough, and the curtains blew around with the chain in it.
You also don't want it to be too heavy for the rod you put the curtains on. Although I want to try this I have to make sure the whole thing doesn't end up more than 15lbs.
A weighted hem is a weighted projectile. Weights will not stop the blowing around, just increase the danger. Having made and installed a LOT of outdoor curtains, I know that this is a dangerous, dangerous solution. PLEASE do not do this.
Yes, I agree! I'd definitely recommend pinning the curtains back in high wind situations and letting them loose in general light breezy days. Thanks for commenting y'all! I think having these conversations is good!
So I used a heavy rod in the hem and yes that was dangerous a strong wind came through lifted the curtain and I was able to grab it we removed it we purchased one to see if that works and it didn’t so no chains what can we use to be safe and to keep the curtains from blowing?
@@dotee1999 the curtains need to be constructed so the blowing effect is REDUCED. Wind plus curtains =blowing fabric. That’s just the way it wires. Think sail. You can NOT keep them from blowing. Not possible.

THANK YOU! I just put some out on porch and been looking on Amazon for curtain weights and decided to search Pinterest! So happy I did!
Glad it was helpful for you!
Hi what size chain did you end up using Thank You
I used blue hawk lighweight duty from lowes. the# 3 gage. It was the cheapest we could find at Lowes. Its working fine.

This is perfect I was trying to figure out what to do about the wind blowing my curtains around. Quick question, will the chain rust?
As one commenter mentioned, make sure it's either coated or galvanized so it wont rust.
What size and or weight do you use or suggest Thank You

I'm not sure to be honest! The homeowner bought it. But it was heavier than a plant hanging chain. The silver thick one at bog box stores work great.

Where can I purchase the chains? Can they be cut to size and where can I have that done? Is Home Depot or Lowes a good place? Thanks
a hardware store can cut to length.

@@kimlandry9061 yes! The chain weighs the curtain down and keeps them from blowing out away from the porch.
Until it rusts?
What kind of chain and where to buy?
We got chain from lowes in the section where they cut lengths of chain. It's the heavy type! Gotta weigh those sails down! 🤣
No link. Great
The chain is available at local hardware stores cut to length.
Or combine the two methods by stringing together a number of smaller weights.
For sure!
