I'm glad that you liked this episode so much it's great introduction to the series, Alexa. Plus you got the bonus of meeting 'Lead' too. I think that you'll like the next one even more.
Excellent stuff! A couple of thoughts about Assignment One... 1) That moment where the mother turns around, and she looks possessed - this seems to be the point where Sapphire and Steel changes. Up to this point, it seems that the force they are confronting could almost be a 'natural' force - dangerous and frightening - but not actively evil. When we see the mother's eyes, is when we realise that these forces Sapphire and Steel are pitted against, are indeed very malevolent. 2) The parents - what was the father doing with all the clocks anyway? At best it seems a bit obsessive, at worst... I sometimes wonder if both the parents were some kind of Lovecraft-esque occultists, who, with some ritual or other, called down the force into the house - or into themselves. We never see the parents display any kind of real warmth to Rob - even when everything is righted at the end, they are still very cold toward him. 3) Lead seems a far more capable operative than either Sapphire and Steel - and it was an ill-thought out move of Steel to take himself down to absolute zero without Lead's help. Lead did actually make a comment about this assignment being 'experience' for Sapphire (possibly Steel) - Maybe Sapphire and Steel are newer agents... Anyway, really enjoying these Sapphire and Steel reviews - looking forward to watching the rest of them!
@jenifferschmitz8618 Gosh, I bet they edited it a bit! It was on around 7pm here in the UK, I don't think they could have screened it in a children's TV slot. Go NZ! :)
I think you are going to have a lot of fun with this series, even the couple of stories that are not as strong as the others have some redeeming features. Spacing them out weekly is also good as they are comparatively very short episodes, though originally they were broadcast on Tuesdays and thursdays with long gaps of month's between each pair of stories!
Loved you extrapolating Helen's future!! Yes, this show really dialed up the fear on a budget of nothing, and the non-human character of the elements comes through when they think nothing of using a child to attain their goal. Looking forward to your feelings about the next story
I knew this would be your kind of series. It's so well made and unique, I really can't think of anything else like it. It shows what can be done on a small budget if you've got a good production team and good actors. Even the child actors are good in this story. I wish someone would make a stage play based on the series, because I think it could work really well theatrically. When the series came out on VHS in the 90s, I bought the lot. Even though DVDs have made VHS obsolete, I'll never get rid of Adventure One, because I got the cover autographed by PJ Hammond and Shaun O'Riordan at a convention years ago. I look forward to you reacting to the rest of the series. You'll never find it getting predictable.
Hi Alexa this story is awesome and I hope you have fun with the next story, and I thought the way Lead, Sapphire, Steel, Rob and his sister Helen worked together was awesome and they were a great team . I liked Leads singing and he was a gentle giant, like Gan from Blakes Seven . I wonder what the actors who played Rob and Helen, look like today been grown up .
Jet is a great guest character. I do love him in this. You're right. With what appears to be a small budget and using simple special fx, the production team created a very effective creepy atmosohere. Even though this was produced by ITV, which generally had larger budgets than the BBC, this series appears to be made on an early Doctor Who budget. Anyway it's a fun little story and sets up the series well. The Railway station assignment is my favorite of these first two stories, and the one I like to go back to re-watch occasionally.
Like you said Helen is the MVP here ans a little more willing to do want is ask of her, and even when she’s quite literally walking towards the danger she had total faith in sapphire and Steel, well Sapphire mostly. Having been at the centre for the first rip and the disappearance of her parents, it so it takes time for her to fully understand want is happening to her. PTSD before PTSD, I very much looking forward to your reaction to season 2

Such a compelling and unique series. DM & JL casting is sublime. Cheers! Really enjoying your reactions!
Thank you! Although does Commander Straker know you are using your SHADO rank online? You know how he gets with security!

This would be a fantastic stage play!

they didnt need sfx the storys were brilliant
@jenifferschmitz8618 -True. I never had any issues with the way the effects were done when I saw this originally on PBS years ago.
That took me back.❤️
Glad you liked this first story Alexa. The best is yet to come.😀👍
Great episode 😊
