EL DORADO: THE GOLDEN CITY BUILDER - Fun Premise… Questionable Everything Else | Quick Review

- El Dorado has a very fun premise: spread your sacrificial Mayan(ish) empire across the Yucatán Peninsula as you attempt to appease the gods through worship, lest you invoke their fiery (and floody) wrath. Alas, the premise is about all El Dorado has going for it.
As always, I hope you enjoy this short, spoiler-free review :)

I palyed the demo for this in a previous Steam Next Fest as well as Aztecs: The Last Sun. I ultimately forgot which one was which, so I put them together, but I do remember Aztecs being slightly better. I guess that's a definitive judgement on which of these civilizations was superior.
"Historians hate this one simple trick..."
Its fun but need a lot of improvement (especially in term of playability/shotcuts/visual). But the idea behind it is really strong, a few good patch to improve it and we good to go (especially the shrines area of effect, shortcuts to upgrade all houses, etc)
Being a fan of city builder, its great that the genre get more attention and games but the dev need to go beyond just "city builder with unique theme (underwater, on top of a mountain, on the back of a giant monster, with beavers, aztec) but also bring unique mechanism (with was the case for Against the storm and made it so good)
Excellent and on-point review. Thank you.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching :)
Gotta ask, with all your experience in the genre: what are you top 3? Great review, btw.
Thank you! And great question. Against the Storm is the first city builder to blow me away in a good while. I also enjoyed IXION and am eagerly awaiting Frostpunk 2. Another fun one is Timberborn. But the consensus "GOAT" seems to be Cities: Skylines (and the second one is arguably even better if you have a great rig that can handle it). Hope this helps!
Thanks for saving me a few bucks, I'll be passing on this one
You bet! Thanks for watching.
Well, this looks like the steam return policy is gonna come in handy. Can you please tell me how long the tutorial is round about?
Sure, the first campaign mission is really just one long tutorial, and it takes about an hour or two. No harm in trying it out and returning it if you don't like it, I suppose :)
cant remove trees either bit of a meme.
Not being able to remove trees in this game is wild. They obscure everything to a hilarious degree. I hate them.
Oof
I know :( but thanks for watching, buddy, hope you're doing well!
