LESSON SUMMARY
Most piano students spend time practicing scales, but is this time well spent? For example, what does a student gain from playing a traditional major scale exercise in parallel octaves? Perhaps not as much as you thought. In today's Quick Tip, 5 Major Scale Exercises to Practice Daily, Jonny May shares a different approach to this familiar topic in order to maximize the benefits for students.

Johnny deserves❤ the Nobel prize for piano teaching
Agreed!!!
Totally!
Agree!!❤
I’ve been playing piano for over 25 years now, and I’ve been using your RUclips videos for the past year. It has made one of the biggest impacts to my skill level and understanding of theory. I now feel comfortable doing more than just reading or memorizing sheet music. You’re an amazing teacher.
What you wrote is basically my experience. I have a career in the judiciary here in Brazil. So, I had to put my passion for music on the back burner. Learning on videos at any time with teachers is very important. theory and practice must go together. Learning jazz goes beyond just reading sheet music
This man could easily be one of the best (if not the best) piano teacher you could find in the internet. Thank you Jonny for sharing your knowledge with us 👍
If I only had a teacher like this when I was little and when had a great upright piano in our home...
You look good with a beard Mr Jonny May. 👍👍👌👌👌Let Them keep comming. Don’t forget to put more blues up. Great stof
Hey Jonny, recently found you. You give really great suggestions for practice I've never heard before just like in this lesson! Thanks
This was an exceptional video. Frankly, I'd find all five practice levels beneficial. 🎶
I am getting on this. Might take me a month to get good at this but i needed some more fun with my practice. Thank you Johnny.
Hi Jonny!
Thanks for sharing this for us.
Your method is really inspiring as well as so practical!
Looking forward to next lesson!!
Great lesson! 🎉
Great course as usual Jonny! Like the beard, really suits you! 👍
This is a great exercise! Love the 5 levels - And love your new look, Jonny, very hip!
I'm a piano beginner and i enjoy so much your lessons guys, i just love the way you teach the scales. Getting to master them on the piano is a double achievement already, first they sound like already songs and makes you want to play them because they just sound fun and beautiful , second they open your horizon on how to truly use them to play songs. Not to mention the music theory part in this lesson about all the names of the presented scales . Big Thank you.
Thank you so much!
Awesome! This lesson is a definite keeper! May take me a year to master all exercises in all keys but it sure worth tackling!
Awesome!
Thanks a lot Johnny!
Oh this is just so good!! Finally scale practice can be beautiful 🎵
I've been looking for an interesting way to practice scales. Thank you. ❤
Great! Thanks for watching!
Hey Jonny, thank you so much for your great content!
A super master tip to approach scales exercises
The best jazz piano teacher ever
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 need this
Brilliant, luv it thx😊
Great video, thank you. I found Level 1 very difficult to master, not for the fingering, but putting the swung rhythm together with both hands. At times I thought my brain would explode, but after two 15 minute sessions and splitting it up into smaller sections it finally came together. I agree this is a more constructive approach to scales, as it includes 2-5-1 chord progression, split rhythm, and scales all together.
Bravo !
Yes! Thank you!
Great one!!! Gracias!!👏👏👏
A marvellous way to teach the scales - thanks so much!
You're the best Johny
I’ve watched many of your videos and I think that is about the very best so,thanks Jonny
Thanks Jonny! You’re smart!
Thanks, thanks, thanks I'm playing accordion but I learn so much from your exercises! Greetings from the Netherlands!
Thank you for this video! I just started sharing videos on my RUclips channel with the hopes of making music literacy accessible to all.
Much appreciation 🙏
Nice beard,Mate!!! Thank you, Jonny. Good tips.🌹⭐🌹😎
This is the best way to practice scale
Thank you -
Great Beard Brother!
thank u my teacher
Jonny the goat
Thanks....looks to be both helpful and fun. I see that the focus is on the right hand. Any suggestions for left hand exercises?
Love this, as usual. Level two is similar to a course on PWJ that I've taken, and I have about 6 keys under my belt so far. Taking the lessons through all 12 keys will continue to be a great exercise. Question: do you have a different series of "most useful" patterns to insert in the 5th exercise (which does feel like Hanon). I suppose we could always write our own, but if you have already done such a teaching video that would be great to see!! 😃
Hi Jonny, this is one amazing tutorial!!! Can you do a video where you explain how to switch between different keys or using chords from other scales? I'm stuck sometimes as I know I need to change but don't know where to. Many thanks for your videos, these are beyond help, they are an inspiration!!!
Hi very good and now how can i practice my minor scales? Could you make a video about how to practice minor scales in the near future? Thankz
He has a video on that
Minor 2-5-1 Progression - 5 Levels from Beginner to Pro
Excellent excercise!!! How could it be performed in the groove of bossa???. Thanks in advance.
Hello my friend i like solo jazz i need EXERCISES MANY A LOT my home is in deep forest
Can you tell me what model piano you’re using?
Also i have issues playing fast runs and playing fur elise and moonlight sonata, i feel like my fingers just won’t let me do it because i have huge hands
Rocking the beard.
Yes, make and do an uncool smug every time you do a scale :: ))
This is great stuff. But how in the world did he know that every time I have a question, in my head it starts with "But Jonny, ...?"
❤️👑
Great but not really early beginner on level 1.
Jonny avec la barbe 😂😂
Ça m'a surpris 😂
the new look is bad ass. walter white of piano
At 3 mins. 1st exercise doesn't do much for scales on lh. Maybe later exercise fixes? Maybe just swap parts
Yeah, exercise 2 sorts that. Beautiful ❤️
Did he just say don’t practice the major scale up and down and then play the major scale up and down as the exercises im so confused Johnny
Jonny gone Ape Man on us. lol Jonny, stand a little closer to the mirror. Loved the lesson, Thanks. 9I know you can take the ribbing).😍
no Jonny. Your new look is cool, but the other was perfect without the beard
Playing both hands together up and down, even with different rhythm or different scales, one ascending, one descending, does nothing to improve your musicality or ability to improvise. No wonder classically trained musicians spend so much time doing exactly that.
I wish you'd stop saying naaaaaaaart.
Shave!
No, simply no. Too much hair - no affair 😅
not good
Brooo you look amazing with beard let it grow bro, you look super good with it
