  • In this video, I explain how a power bank works -- how it is charged and how it charges your phone and USB devices. I take a power bank apart to see what's inside and explain what the electronic components do.

Thanks for the video or teardown, it is nice to know that you have used it for several years before it died, so maybe you can still replace the dead one to make it work again , and sometimes some brands really have a fake battery capacity and some even have fake batteries inside and only a few is connected and working so it is good that you know how to teardown powerbanks.

Hi, your video was really informative. I am working on a solar power bank using a lithium-ion battery. Do you think you can break down the components of this battery management system a bit more for me?.

I have dismantled one of these before. Is there any use for the battery (or any other part for that matter) after it's teared appart?

Sure. If the battery is in good condition, it can be used in other electronics - as long as it is protected and capable of safely providing enough power, of course.

so what I'm getting out of this is that if I have an old power bank that is barely working anymore, I can recycle the battery and use the circuit to create a solar power charger? That's what I'm trying to do but since the out put from the solar panel is not regular I was wondering the most practical way to make it 5V. Rather than buying components, I think upcycling an old power bank circuit may be ideal. Would just connecting the power cell to the circuit, which already has the USB port, work? What are the minimum and maximum voltages out put by the solar panel that would be safe to use in this way? (so I can choose my panels properly). The idea to connect always have connected a phone or a power bank to the USB port of the upcycled circuit that's connected to the solar panel while in use, so that I can charge my phone with that charged power bank when the solar panel charger is not in use

Hey! I'm not entirely sure how the power bank circuit would react to potentially fluctuating input from a solar panel and having a load (a phone or whatever) connected at the same time. Do you know the make and model? In any case, for best results my advice would be to get a dedicated board for solar with MPPT (maximum power point tracking).

Hi, I’m working on a similar project so I’d like to discuss it with you if you have the time.

is it a bad idea to run a raspberry pi or a macbook from a powerbank... i dont want to cause a small explosion 😂

Yeah, you can do that. If the Macbook charges through a USB port, the power bank should support USB Power Delivery, I think.
