Not me missing my cue and uploading Black Friday on Saturday. Oh well... I also forgot to say something: Paul foreshadowing the entire plot when he said "What's the appeal of Tamagotchis, or Beanie Babies, or Wiggly? It's just mania, Emma. Like a spell..." is better than anything Hollywood's ever done. I said what I said.
BTW, if you want more adventures from Hatchetfield, they released a miniseries called Nightmare Time with three episodes, each with two hour long stories set in Hatchetfield with pretty much every character from TGWDLM and BF appearing. @Barbara 2.0 I just wanted to point out something you might have missed that is incredibly important. The Homeless Guy (Joey Richter) in Black Friday is the same character that was in TGWDLM, despite the lack of mustache. Joey had to do the show clean shaven because Uncle Wiley is clean shaven so he didn't have a mustache for the show. So, yes, the Ted Mustache at the end is 100% fake. Fun Fact: Ted was never written into the show. But for this showing, Nick managed to pull the Ted Costume out of storage so they slapped a fake mustache on Joey and brought Ted back for this show only.

I love the fact that for Wiggley’s voice Jon is just casually backstage creepily talking into a mic after doing whatever he needed to do on stage

A couple of fun facts:
-the girl who plays Hannah is actually a child, she was 13 years old when the show was performed.
-the role of Lex was actually originally goint to be played by Mariah Rose Faith, but then Mariah was cast as Regina in the Mean Girls National Tour and thus Angela Giarratana went on to play Lex
-due to the focus on alternate dimensions and realities it is really possible this show takes place in a different universe than the one from The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals, which would explain why we see actual people instead of an alien hivemind and why singing and dancing seems to be a normal thing in this universe.
-the planes at the end are supossed to be the beggining of WW3 as Russia is attacking America back after Wiggly left the bomb they sent to the Black And White in Moscow
-rewatching this you actually realize a lot of what Hannah said Webby told her was foreshadowing
-the whole cast was sick during the show's run, which would explain why they sound better in the cast recording than in the actual show.
I still need to listen to the cast recording, but it's insane that they were sick and still did THAT hahaha ❤
And yeah, I got the plane thing. It was my favourite ending out of all the Starkid shows I've seen so far

There was also one night where Dylan couldn't preform due to beng ill, so Jeff Blim stepped in and played both Tom and his roles. Wish we had anything to see form that show, people say he was insanely good.

In TGWDLM it was Robert, this time it was Angela- whenever the show for Nerdy Prudes Must Die comes around, I _swear_ I'm gonna start taking bets on who'll be doing the recording day while sick!
@@lalas181 It seems to be a Starkid Tradition/Curse that at least one person gets sick (usually Lauren Lopez) on the day of the show. Denise Donovan got sick during Starship. It's why she doesn't sound all that great in the recorded version on Starkid's RUclips. Her voice hadn't fully recovered by the time curtain went up so she couldn't really sing.

@@nacho_girl Yeah... the poor girl gets sick the most out of all of Team Starkid. I believe Meredith is the second-most ill and she has stated she always has throat/voice problems on performance days. On Day 2 of Homecoming, Meredith woke up with no voice and, yet, she went on to perform two shows damn near flawlessly.

*The role of Lex was supposed to go to Mariah Rose Faith, but she was busy with mean girls, so the lovely Angela got the role ( and honestly I love her so god damn much! Most lead roles don't go to altos)
*I saw the show live and Hannah had an entire dance sequence during Califormia and it was CUT for the youtube version

I tend to really love emotional ones, so Black Friday and What if tomorrow comes are probably my favourites. Also, I absolutely LOVE the whole scene during Black Friday and I was literally getting the chills during the last song

@@Barbara2.0 the story with Jamie was that my friend dressed up as Charlotte for the show and looked stage accurate, and We sat in the second row of the theater. At Stage door we were chatting with Angela and she told us while she was on stage singing black friday, she had a panic moment because she thought Jaime was in the audience, but then she remembered "OH. WAIT. JAIME is on stage rn pretending to choke me out!".
Also at thr end of the show during curtain call we stood up and clapped and Jaime gasped, wide eyed she pointed towards my friend and my friend mirrored her. It was like the spider man seeing spider man meme. It was amazing and im sorry it took me so long to respond 😅😅
Edit:I also forgot to add half of the cast was sick when this was filmed, the album has better recordings of the track.

One of my favourite little details is that Charlotte puts on the hat that “keeps you safe” before wiggle, so she leaves before the building is burned and can be in the finale with the rest of the hatchet field characters! SOOO CLEVER 🥰

When they were filming for Black Friday, they had the issue that basically like every show someone was sick, especially Lauren. If you listen to the album version of the songs a lot of the vocals are much clearer.
Yeah. Also. In TGWDLM, Jeff was sick. The next day, Lauren was ill. They were filming when she was ill and nick lang was her. There is a clip on ytbe. It's absolutely hilarious. Also, you have not met Diane (Lauren and Joey's dog) yet and it's just awesome. She is only in behind the scenes and on another channel called Tin Can Bros (joey, Brian R and Corey L's channel. You only know joey)

The reason the nurse stuck herself with the needle is because the magic hat protected Hannah. Also, the evil nurse song sounds like evil Julie Andrews, all I can imagine is Maria gone evil and killing the von Trapps.

the show was a critique on American consumerism, and how it brings out the worst in everyone (don't know if you noticed, but every time a green light was cast on someone, they immediately became more aggressive & possessive - that was wiggly's influence), & ethan's death makes sense because it was so senseless - he didn't get to develop as a character, cause he was sadly in the wrong place at the wrong time. a lot of the sci-fi elements were nods to twin peaks & twilight zone, of which Starkid are all fans of.
The Twilight Zone is all over this and I love it!
I didn’t even realize the green light thing until about 5 rewatches. Also fun fact: Uncle Wiley has a red light. He and Wiggly together make Christmas colors.

I had the same happen to me when I watched Twisted (I watched BF first). Only after he began to sing I realised that it was Tom (Dylan).

Cast (and where you may know them) :
Becky Barnes - played by Kim Whalen who is a famous actress. (married to curt)
President Howie - played by curt mega who was a warbler on glee (no lines but he sang. Married to Kim whalen)
Lex - played by Angela Girrantana
Hannah - played by Kendall Nicole (Yakshe) who was on a car advertisement.
Xander Lee (not really any big roles) - James Tolbert. He choreographed everything from starship onwards including twisted, tgwdlm and black Friday.
Kendall Nicole was also in a Star Wars The force awakens ad and I absolutely hated that ad but now I feel kinda guilty 😅
@starkid fan James only choreographed Potter Sequel, Twisted, TGWDLM, and Black Friday. Denise Donovan choregraphed Starship and Firebringer. Lauren Lopez choregraphed TGWDLM with James. Katie Spelman choregraphed Ani, Holy Musical B@man, and Trail To Oregon.
Now we just need Robert Manion to choregraph some stuff for Starkid since he's also a Dance Choreographer. There's a reason that Lauren, James, and Robert are front and center in the final part of "Deck The Halls Of Northville High." You'll notice that the three of them are front and center and have the most complicated dance moves of the group. Being actual Professional Dance Choreographers (and James being the one who made this particular number up), they had the skill to pull it off in such a short amount of time. Now that's not to say that the rest of the dance number is simple, because it's not (go watch James' instructional video teaching the entire dance on his RUclips Channel, it's insane), but their parts were even MORE complicated.
To quote Dumbledore, "Well Tom, sometimes... you accidentally kill your family."

Now that you've watched both Hatchetfield shows i really recommend Nightmare Time, it's not a musical but a series of livestreamed readings of horror comedy stories all taking place in Hatchetfield, read by the casts of The Guy Who Didn't Like Musicals and Black Friday.

Black Friday is just absolutely crazy and I love it so much! A lot of the cast was sick during the filmed performance so the singing isn’t as amazing as it normally is, but they all still did so well! Curt Mega, who was the president in this, is also the lead in Spies are Forever where he plays Agent Curt Mega, plus you get more villain Joey
Black Friday is Starkid's darkest musical, and Nightmare Time (scripts for Hatchetfield read and acted by Starkid during quarantine) is even darker if I recall. If you like TGWDLM and Black Friday, watch Nightmare Time.

Fun facts!
•Robert was not originally intended to play the character he did. He was originally intended to be the guy at the movie theater, but that role was recast as Joey when they decided who Robert was playing. Furthermore, said guy at the movie theater was intended to be the man with *_V E R Y L O W B L O O D P R E S S U R E!_*
•The Man In A Hurry saying "I'm in a hurry!" Got that uproarious applause because Jeff was only credited as "Man In A Hurry" on the website to avoid spoiling the fact that PIEP returns.

The guy playing Xander Lee (the other PEIP guy) was also the choreographer! Also Curt Mega (the president) put a bunch of behind the scene videos on his RUclips so I’d definitely recommend checking them out, very interesting!

this is one of the reason why i love starkid and their actors do multiple roles at one show cause it shows just how versatile their acting can be. trail to oregon is a good example and joey richter with his multiple roles in that show
I think its exiding to see you watching the newer starkid musicals first, because when you watch the old one you can really see how mutch the actors have improved their singing and just the shows in general. I can't wait until you react to the a very potter musical series😊
The brilliant thing about the way the show changes from sharp satire to sci-fi is exactly what you said: it becomes more detached from reality. You go in expecting satire so your defences are up. Then you get caught up in the narrative and forget there’s any social commentary, you’re into the story and therefore vulnerable. So when it’s all over and you snap out of it, you realise the satirical subtext was there the whole time, sneaking past your protective cynicism.
I was super late to the whole Starkid party, but it’s fascinating watching them grow as artists and creators
I think that putting Lauren in the center of a cult is soooo damn meta!
Though i think my favorite Lauren roles are in Spies are Forever and A Very Potter Trilogy. And Starship somewhere next to them. Love this woman, but in those roles she's just perfect.
My guess - you will adore Spies Are Forever. Mostly because Lauren and Joey.
Jeff wrote all the music for this and TGWDLM. He also wrote trail to Oregon. I can’t wait for you to see Lauren in that show.

My friend who was at the filming (you can actually see her in some shots before Joey starts singing Made In America) has to explain it to me haha. But WITC is definitely one of my top Starkid songs now.

1.) You're so right about Jeff Blim's range! Just within Trail to Oregon, TGWDLM, and Black Friday, he sings between a G2 and an F5, which is absolutely insane.
2.) James Tolbert (the guy who played Barack Obam- I mean Bob Morris and Xander Lee) choreographed AVPS, Twisted, TGWDLM, and Black Friday! He's been a member of Team Starkid since their college days, but this was his first time actually ~in~ a Starkid show

24:15 gonna have to disagree with you on this point. I think using metaphor and Fantasy/SciFi elements to deconstruct real world problems can be one of the most powerful ways to tell a story/make a point.
Some of my favourite movies use this method to make social commentary. Like Ex Machina, Ruby Sparks, Her, and Collossal to name a few.
In Black Friday I think it still works because Wiggly CHOSE America because of it's rampant consumerism. The social commentary would have lost it's significance if it's American setting was just a random coincidence, but I think it is still very much relevant by the end.
I just commented about how effective the compelling story is at getting past our natural defensiveness when we know something is satire. Then when you look back at the narrative afterward the social commentary hits that much harder

The last one is obviously Satan, the real man (this is a reference to the Firebringer BTS video, they all worship Satan and it's great)

Dylan is easily the best actor in Starkid. He can make me cry so easily. Also. Joey's villain monologue was amazing.

*The reason Becky missed with the hypodermic was that Hannah was wearing Ethan's magic hat
*Uncle Wiggly (Joey) was Colonel Wilbur Cross, MacNamara's mentor, who went into the Black & White 13 years ago.
*In the final number What If Tomorrow Comes most of the characters from TGWDLM: Paul, Charlotte, Ted, Bill, Hot Chocolate Guy, make an appearance
Ooooh this is so cool! How do we know about Uncle Wiggly being the mentor though? Is that mentioned? I think I missed it...
@@Barbara2.0 In PEIP headquarters MacNamara tells the President that his mentor, Cross, went into the Black&White and came out a raving lunatic, pledged his loyalty to Wiggly, and disappeared. When Uncle Wiggly is recruiting Linda he tells her he used to be a Colonel. Then when MacNamara goes into the Black&White to help the President and meets Uncle Wiggly, they recognise each other.
If you want more villain joey, watch Trail to Oregon! It's also just an amazing show.

I know this was uploaded a while ago, but I wanted to mention something I learned after watching Jon's commentary of the first two musicals which I highly recommend checking those out. (He played Paul and Gary the Lawyer and Wiggly's voice in those) If you notice on the others in the mall who got obsessed for the doll, they remained the same on the outward appearance except for their actions and expressions. Whereas Gary, tied his tie around his head and acted super crazed. Jon jokingly played it off of Gary not actually being affected by Wiggly. He just wanted to join in the craze to be a part of something because look at his last scene as Gary. Linda gets killed and Gary catches her to then have the concious notion to call Gerald to talk about the will. The rest of the people there were still crazed after Wiggly enough to burn in the fire with it while Gary carried Linda out. Funny little background detail. It was also a way for the two to leave the stage fast enough to transform into Paul and Emma for the next part.

This quality difference camera wise for the show is because of how old the other musicals we’re are and how low they’re budgeting was back then compared to now. It’s only natural that they’re budget is bigger now and they’re camera quality is better since it was made back in I believe 2019. For example for the man who played jafar, twisted and Black Friday are years apart so it’s only natural that he looks so different in appearance. Also the fact that he’s playing such a different role here in Black Friday makes it so much more of a difference
I hate Linda, but I also love her so much.

Maybe it's just Lauren. She just manages to be anyone and everyone and make it work.

Would really recommend Come From Away. A slightly lesser known musical with some truly heartbreaking/heartwarming songs and a some comedy as well.

It’s time to play Maya knows too much about Starkid!
The people you didn’t recognize were probably Angela (lex), James Tolbert (Xander Lee), Curt mega (president), Kim Whalen (Becky), and Kendall Nicole Yakshe (Hannah).
Curt Mega was in a show with a lot of Starkids made by the Tin Can Brothers called Spies Are Forever. He and Kim are also married. He acting coaches Kendall which is how they chose her. He also had a supporting role on Glee!
Angela’s role was originally going to be played by Mariah Rose Faith but then she got cast in the mean girls tour. Mariah refuses to sing songs from the show because she and Angela are very close friends.
James Tolbert has actually been part of team starkid since basically the beginning. He has choreographed almost every show!
There was originally a monologue where McNamara talked about his husband but it was cut for time.
This was Dylan’s first show with Starkid since twisted.
Black Friday actually opened on Halloween!
The performance of the show on actual Black Friday was unable to happen because too much of the cast was sick. So I believe to did a version of tgwdlm with the healthy actors instead!
Every night when McNamara entered for the first time, Angela (lex) and Corey (frank) would record the audiences reaction from backstage.
Jon matteson (Paul) is the voice of wiggly!
Nick Lang (the shows writer and director) made the original prototype of wiggly on a cabbage patch kid doll.
There was a night where Robert was sick. There is a part in Wiggle where and James each have a dance solo and then pick up Lauren by her arms after. When Robert wasn’t there James had to do it by himself. Where they normally say “Jam!” They said “James!”
That’s all I can think of for now. I know more fun facts about the musical than this one since it is the newest one.

I don't know if anyone recommended this yet but if you want more of Hatchedfield I highly recommend Nightmare Time by Team Starkid. It's not technically a musical, but it has musical-elements and some AMAZING songs. They produced it during the pandemic and performed it over Zoom because they couldn't do Nerdy Prudes Must Die, a musical they planned for this year. Yes, it's different because of the conditions it was produced under but AMAZING nevertheless and has its very own charme. Episode One is up on RUclips, Episodes Two and Three were ticketed but will be on RUclips at a later date :)
